check to see if there are schoolage or younger kids in the area, and if there is a parent to control them during non-school hours.

Try to determine if there are folks in the area that like to blast the stoopid  bass tones after the time at which you'd like to be SLEEPING.

Find out if teh schoolaged kids that ARE in the area are obnoxious/fuck with your stuff/ be as loud as possbile little bastards that their parents dont give a rats ass about.

Get friendly with your local police department.

(yes, I am a crazy old lady, dammit..  friggin KIDS! I'm SLEEPING!! get the fuck outta my yard!!!)

...never live too close to a trampoline.

size up= if there will be dogs who bark for hours on end.

pop in late on Friday night- to see if loud radios- parties are there.

note if there is off street parking...

do not live where a tractor trailer can park and idle for hours on end.

I recently moved from a really cool historic building in Long Beach, to another cool looking historic building further up North. The management seemed professional, they have all these neat things they are doing with the building, but my neighbors are druggies, mentally handicapped people (as in mentally ill and developmentally challenged), and smokers who like to go on the fire escape and let their smoke blow back into my apartment, even though it is against the rules.

It is seriously gross here. I am moving in a couple of weeks.

Those are the reasons why I moved into a hotel when I relocated here in FL.  I wanted to take the time to check out neighborhoods and areas before committing to a lease.  I lucked into a great place thru Craigslist....nice quiet neghborhood, considerate land lord, and one who doesn't take crap from his tenants.  He knows I work and sleep screwy hours, so he always checks in with me before he's coming in for general maintenance, or if I need something fixed.

Good luck, Greedy, I hope you can find a way to a better place.  Been where you are, sent the t-shirt back.

Hmm, well you can always whisper very calmly to the trouble-makers and tell them if they keep fucking with your stuff and waking you up at night you'll spend your last dime paying the biggest, baddest, meanest mother-fucker you can find to rape their asses.  Then, get your good pal (insert name here) to come over on his Harley, hand him a few bucks and point towards the trouble-makers (in plain sight where they can see you) and then smile sweetly.

except they are KIDS.

*sigh*

I have a disconnect for that kind of thing.. if they were teens or older, it would be different...

damn. yeah, that's a horse of a different color.  Well, your only option is to befriend the kids, earn their respect - and encourage them to behave better.  At least with your stuff.  It takes longer though.

I feel your pain, Greedy. I'm in the middle of a move to higher ground. When I moved here I needed a place fast and did not check out this neighborhood as well as I should have. I paid for my lack of due diligence. Not this time. I have been scouting this move for months. Looked at approximately 30 houses in May before I found the right one. You have the right idea. Research, research and more research. I like the idea one poster had about renting a hotel room to check the area out before you commit.

Getting cozy with the local police? I guess it can't hurt. I don't see how it helps other than to be on a first name basis with them when they show up to mop up and fill out the report after your door gets kicked in. The officer who showed up after my home was robbed last year couldn't have been more indifferent if he tried. A concealed carry permit and a loaded firearm do much more for my sense of security than having the local PD on my Facebook friend's list.

...blocks go thru cycles.  This one-  had 10 years of young families- then 10 years of retirees, now shifting back to young families.

I do not cringe when I see kids out playing.  I think- I am so blessed to live where it is safe for people to be outside with out gang shootings and crime.

Playing is not bothersome - the screaming matches are.   Kids need to know there is an adult around.

Next door just put up a pool.  So we will see how it goes.  I think the trampolines are worse then pools.

I was off the site for a few weeks moving myself - where did you move to?

I feel your pain...

I buy these by the case and don't attempt to sleep without them:

well...if I would start working again for my previous employer then I would be living with 8 crazy kids under the same roof within a village of 180 crazy kids...guess there would not be an escape...but then...I can sleep pretty easy and even easier with my nightmeds, so no harm done

Anyhow...good luck Greedy...I heard kids don't mind pocket money to shut up for an hour or two...

She said no-- due her job hours.

-------------------
Another thing-  to watch for is street cleaning.  This town has no alternative parking for street cleaning day.  So those who must park on the street-  have to park far away one day a week.

When my son was a baby and took naps during the day the neighbor guy downstairs played his thumping car stereo every day during my sons napping hour. I complained to the manager... nothing. I complained to the cops and they came out and talked to him, nothing....

So, I was at my wits end, my son wasn't sleeping very well, so I went down stairs and I said... "Yanno, I got this little guy that needs a nap, so if you would please keep your stereo off from 1:30 to 3:30 I would really appreciate, and I won't complain otherwise (even though it was like water torture to listen to it for hours at a time... gave me head aches and everything)...

He at least stopped during those hours, a truce if you will....

My suggestion is just to go outside and nicely explain your situation, even fairly youngish kids can understand napping, I am sure their parents do it.
