yes, atletes use them...I am sure a team would gladly take them!

I was sure surprized when I went to buy a bottle of iodine and was told they dont even sell it anymore...it was like wtf

They don't sell iodine anymore? My mom always kept a bottle around

I was wanting some of that.

the stuff most people called iodine that burned and stained when put on a scrape should never ever be consumed. If you insist on taking iodine you need to get Potassium Iodide.

windchymes -> RE: Salt tablets? (6/8/2011 9:14:31 PM)

Okay, we didn't need to know about the laxatives [8|]

Termyn8or -> RE: Salt tablets? (6/8/2011 9:39:48 PM)

"you insist on taking iodine you need to get Potassium Iodide. "

In a way, it's the potassium that carries it. And there are companion minerals to potassium that must be ingested in reasonably balanced quantities.

But really iodized salt is a waste of time. That was only instituted because people started coming down with an iodine deficiency after they started refining salt.

Sodium will take it there, but then there is a suplus of sodium, so oh well.

Hunky, did your doctor tell you to consume more salt? I doubt it. I'm on levoxyl and I'm not supposed to load up on salt. I don't know why you decided to do this, but don't. Return the bottles next time you're there and save the money.

If you don't eat any seafood then you ought to be buying iodized salt for general use. But that means if a recipe demands 1/2 a teaspoon, then that's all you put in. And you really don't need very much of it.

No.  I also have high blood pressure. So salt is to be avoided.

I read Mary Shamon (sp)   I do not eat much sea food.

Man oh man. I am not happy. So I buy salt tablets thinking it is iodine- not thinking. I bought 4 bottles. When I went to take one- I see this is not what i WANTED. Gas to too expensive to go get the refund on the 3 un-=opened bottles- which would come to $1.50 total.

Tell me.. what was the original desire for supplemental iodine about?

You believe any crazy shit you find on the web. I wonder how much of your health trouble can be traced to exactly that?

Termyn8or -> RE: Salt tablets? (6/9/2011 2:23:39 PM)

If you want iodine, it's in foods actually.

From the files :

"Good sources of iodine include vegetables grown in iodine-rich soil, kelp, onions, milk, milk products, salt water fish and seafood. The iodine content of vegetables varies widely with the iodine content of the soil in which they are grown. The table below can be used as a guide.

Sodium or potassium iodide is added to table salt in many countries including the USA, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand. Salt used in the processing and refining of foods is not usually iodized. Potassium iodate is used in the baking of some bread.

Mackerel 150g 255 mcg
Mussels 150g 180 mcg
Cod 150g 165 mcg
Kipper 150g 107 mcg
Whiting 150g 100 mcg
Yogurt 150g 95 mcg
Milk 560g 86 mcg
Cockles 50g 80 mcg
Fish fingers 75g 75 mcg
Pilchards in tomato sauce 100g 64 mcg
Scampi 150g 62 mcg
Herring 150g 48 mcg
Beer 560g 45 mcg      [ <<<<<<< ! ! ! ! ]
Plaice 150g 42 mcg
Prawns 150g 42 mcg
Eggs 70g 37 mcg
Sardines, canned in oil 150g 35 mcg
Trout 150g 24 mcg
Kidney 150g 23 mcg
Liver 150g 22 mcg
Tuna 150g 21 mcg
Bacon 150g 18 mcg
Cheese 40g 18 mcg
Potato chips 265g 13 mcg

The average iodine intake in the USA is over 600 mcg per day.

Recommended dietary allowances

USA

Men 150 mcg
Women 150 mcg
Pregnancy 175 mcg
Lactation 200 mcg
UK

Men 140 mcg
Women 140 mcg
Australia

Men 150 mcg
Women 120 mcg
Pregnancy 150 mcg
Lactation 200 mcg"

It's always better to get what you need from food. That info might be a bit dated, but everybody didn't die. It indicates that we get alot more iodine than we need, but then that is still their position, they can be as wrong as anyone else. Any individual can possibly need more, or have trouble absorbing it, or almost any other nutrient.

So take it with a grain of..............nevermind.

I returned the 3 bottles for a refund.   Yay.

Tantriqu -> RE: Salt tablets? (8/24/2011 4:52:28 PM)

Cretinous drivel.
Every person needs trace amounts of iodine, easily added to commercial salt: a few cents per tonne.
You don't need 'natural'.
One third of the world is at risk: read this: Towards the Global Elimination of Brain Damage Due to Iodine Deficiency, based on WHO reports: http://iccidd.server295.com/media/Hetzel%20book/hetzel-b-section1.pdf

And remember you'd literally be a cretin if you didn't have enough: cretinism, the most common preventable cause of mental retardation, is caused by low iodine.
Thank the gods some countries made it a required additive, but the reduced salt intake and increased 'organic' craze is causing rich people to be iodine deficient, which is linked to breast and stomach cancer, as well as cretinism in kids; are we going to get epidemics of rich cretins now, like we're getting epidemics of rich kids with rotting teeth because their parents give them bottled instead of fluoridated water?
Morons.

I also bought multiple vits, antacid, laxatives, sinus tabs,  peroxide, rubbing alcohol,  5 cans of nuts, produce (bananas, oranges, grapes, lettuce, 2 cucumbers, celery and onion) , 2 packs of cheese, 10 large chocolate bars, 2 boxes of cereal,  3 loafs of earth grains bread,  16 lbs of cat food, 10 lbs of cat litter, flea spray.

Except for the multivitamins I never or hardly ever buy any of that stuff; partly because I do not have any pets. I think that it must have been one or two months since I last took a multivitamin tablet. (I do nearly daily take vitamin C tablets, though.) A couple of days ago I bought 0.368 grammes of grapes, though.

Then why the hell would you buy all those salt tabs? It's not the same thing as Levothyroxin you know.
