I just got done slicing up a ham. The meat slicer used electricity. Shame on me. And the poor pig that had to literally give up it's ass for my club sandwiches, oh the humanity. And I'm smoking a cigarette. What's more it's a tax free cigarette, fuck all that money they supposedly give to cancer research. Let them croak.

Go green ? Hell I'll have a car licensed in a county that is exempt fro emissions testing, I'm going brown. Surely 11,000 PPM of hydrocarbons won't hurt, you know you have to set the idle a bit rich unless you got good fuel injection. And the timing is going to be so advanced the engine will barely start. What do I care about nitrous oxide, it's laughing gas ! Have a laugh on me.

So the next time I type something into Google I will destroy the planet. Cool, we can all die laughing.

Status: offline 		Oh shit, more carbon on a planet that creates carbon naturally how do we know we are killing the world, maybe it is the world just loves more carbon. That is all these experts on everything, do they really know the truth of it all or are they just guessing, one theory after another. But one thing that the internet has enabled is the less trees cut down to make useless newspapers that after they are read, one just does not know what to do with them for they are a pure waste of resources.

But if one google search after another eats into your conscience, do with it what you can do with the tv, turn it off and live in peace.

One thing I do understand about this planet we parasite on, it seeks to balance and will balance when it needs to and fuck the parasites when it happens, for the parsites are nothing when the planet chooses to move, and that has been demonstrated time and time again.

I think the title on the article was a bit "if it bleeds it leads" to grab attention, but I see nothing inherently wrong with looking for ways to cut energy consumption. Why all the negativity towards the idea that making the internet more energy efficient is a good thing?

Status: offline 		Whilst we depend on fossil fuel and nuclear fission energy what energy we use in anything from scorching a bit of bread to make toast or surfing the internet is adding to what wastes we create, but at leat the internet is waking us upto the fact of what we are doing, so before it's demise it is educating us towards an more enviromenatly conscious existence. So of all those google searches how many I wonder are towards sustainable ennergy production.

As for myself interested in permaculture, I often visit the places where the greens turn theory into fact and offer solutions to much that we are conscious about, energy production on a small scale to feed a family and that with a conservative mindset, for we cannot yet create anything that is without cost.

Let's use their example, looking up tonight's movies playing. They are whinging about the energy consumption of using a net search, yet they do NOT discuss the energy consumption for the previous methods.

It used to be to find out the day's showings that you would read the paper or call the theater. I suppose that you could also drive down and look. How much energy does a phone call take? Creating a paper?

They also discuss the amount of energy the entire net uses all over the world and then compare it as though it was a single country. There are 203 countries. So, yeah, not so surprising that the internet energy usage of 7 billion and some people is greater than that of a single country. According to my handy-dandy calculator that gives an average of 34,482,758 per country. Yeah. . . the needs for one item for 7 billion is gonna outweigh that. What is the energy usage for cell phones, landlines, postal/package service for the ENTIRE world compared to the net?

This is just another story to freak people out with faulty logic/research.

Status: offline 		Lets take bill paying.  A few clicks and I am done other then the water bill- for that bill I have to drive it to the office.  I could mail it- but the drive to the mail box is almost as far as their office.    So which is more wastefull?   The drive or the clicks?

I walk about twelve miles a day to do my errands and sometimes cycle, but the hills are killers around here, so sometimes walking with a backpack is easier than pushing a pannier laden cycle up a hill.

Status: offline 		I Think the author was having a hard time coming up with a good story.

First... Computers are on area where increased efficiency is almost assured. It took dozens of servers to do what 1 server can do now compared to in the late 90's.

Second... Data Centers are already, energy aware as a large percentage of their costs are energy related.

Third... The internet I'm sure has saved more energy than it has consumed. I don't have to buy a newspaper, magazine, or run to the video store anymore. I don't even need to go to the book store, to buy a book. I don't have to drive 40 miles anymore to go to a real Electronics store, as I used to have to do if I wanted to buy a stick of ram, a good set of speakers, a car stereo, etc...
I rarely turn the TV on, as I generally, just play netflix on the computer while I work. I don't buy cd's I simply download the songs I like, or listen on youtube. I don't drive to work, as I work on the internet.

So, for me, maybe I use the same or slightly more electricity due to the internet, and the servers required, and my computer, but it's replaced mostly gas consumption in my case.

Status: offline 		Yes, there is a very valid comparison but it would take a very deep and involved cost-benefit analysis to really determine any savings or consumption.

The validity is born of the consumption being so high and concentrated yet while much improved...is very high while the net is due to expand still and by several times over. Power will soon be at a real premium and it will raise net costs.

It is a big deal to power 100,000 homes, and now it's one warehouse that could...power 100,000 homes. Recall that we had plenty of water in the mid-west aquifer until we discovered it more than 1/2 gone and is now rationed. I guess when we burn all of the coal and all of the oil and gas, this issue likely and sunlight...will finally be a thing of the past.

I don't know, and neither do you. Because the research and/or article does not tell us.

It is similar to those stupid windmills that people tout as being so "green." Well. . . just how long does a windmill have to produce energy to repay the energy that it took to make it? The materials had to be mined and processed, transported, then assembled, then it had to be transported and put together. Oh, and they are painted, so there is the energy cost of making the paint and putting it on. Then there is the human labor it took and the energy used to make the food, clothes, and transportation costs to get the humans to where they could do all this work. And remember that there are blinky red lights on top that are using energy. Then the blades constantly need replacing. I see those going down the roads on trucks all the time. Or any other part that needs to be replaced, however, those are harder to recognize. So, how much energy did it take to create the windmill?

You are saying you drive 126 miles to pay the water bill and the nearest post box is nearly as far as the office ? Where the fuck do you live, in the middle of a desert ?

Status: offline 		^ it was a joke.    It is about a mile.   I wont walk it- because of the broken sidewalks- and too many dogs here in town.  It is startling to nearly be attacked by a dog every 3-4th house.    The sidewalks make it so one has to walk on the street- which  can be dodging cars.

I try not to rattle my blood pressure.

I looked at who posted it, I read the preposterous claims in the first 4 paragrpahs and closed it. No time to roll my eyes even.
