I Think the author was having a hard time coming up with a good story. First... Computers are on area where increased efficiency is almost assured. It took dozens of servers to do what 1 server can do now compared to in the late 90's. Second... Data Centers are already, energy aware as a large percentage of their costs are energy related. Third... The internet I'm sure has saved more energy than it has consumed. I don't have to buy a newspaper, magazine, or run to the video store anymore. I don't even need to go to the book store, to buy a book. I don't have to drive 40 miles anymore to go to a real Electronics store, as I used to have to do if I wanted to buy a stick of ram, a good set of speakers, a car stereo, etc... I rarely turn the TV on, as I generally, just play netflix on the computer while I work. I don't buy cd's I simply download the songs I like, or listen on youtube. I don't drive to work, as I work on the internet. So, for me, maybe I use the same or slightly more electricity due to the internet, and the servers required, and my computer, but it's replaced mostly gas consumption in my case.
