Hero Gurkha receives bravery medal from the Queen
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:19 PM on 2nd June 2011

Cpl Pun, an acting sergeant during his Afghan deployment, was on sentry duty at the time of the attack when he heard a clinking noise outside the small base.

At first he thought it might be a donkey or a cow, but when he went to investigate he found two insurgents digging a trench to lay an improvised explosive device (IED) at the checkpoint's front gate.

He realised that he was completely surrounded and that the Taliban were about to launch a well-planned attempt to overrun the compound.

The enemy opened fire from all sides, destroying the sentry position where the soldier had been on duty minutes before.

Defending the base from the roof, the Gurkha remained under continuous attack from rocket-propelled grenades and AK47s for more than a quarter of an hour.

Most of the militants were about 50ft away from him, but at one point he turned around to see a 'huge' Taliban fighter looming over him.

The soldier picked up his machine gun and fired a long burst at the man until he fell off the roof.

When another insurgent tried to climb up to his position, the Gurkha attempted to shoot him with his SA80 rifle. But it did not work, either because it had jammed or because the magazine was empty.

He first grabbed a sandbag but it had not been tied up and the contents fell to the floor.

Then he seized the metal tripod of his machine gun and threw it at the approaching Taliban militant, shouting in Nepali 'Marchu talai' ('I will kill you') and knocking him down.

Two insurgents were still attacking by the time the heroic Gurkha had used up all his ammunition, but he set off a Claymore mine to repel them.

At this point his company commander, Major Shaun Chandler, arrived at the checkpoint, slapped him on the back and asked if he was OK.

In total he fired off 250 general purpose machine gun rounds, 180 SA80 rounds, six phosphorous grenades, six normal grenades, five underslung grenade launcher rounds and one Claymore mine.

The only weapon he did not use was the traditional Kukri knife carried by Gurkhas because he did not have his with him at the time.

I've served with Gurkas a couple of times in my previous life, and I was always impressed with these small men who simply did not understand the term "can't" and were brave, intelligent and loyal to a fault.

Kudos to Cpl Pun.

Firm

Wow.

Good on ya, Corporal Pun.

I love how the queen is beaming as she presents the award to him.

Of course, here in the US he would have been castigated by the anti-war dudes.

Those guys have been famous for their ferocity since colonial times.

Awesome shock troops.

Hey Firm, Aren't those the guys that believe that if they pull their knife, it must taste blood before they put it back. If I'm not mistaken, they will even cut themselves slightly if there are no enemies around.

Might be an old wives tale.

I'm not sure about that, Aylee.

I know a lot of Vietnam vets faced hostility, but I think/hope we've gotten better at separating (and support) the soldier from the political context.

Why de-rail a post about such a great story?

Dont count on it. The people who vilified VietNam vets own half of Washington.

But hopefully not to put a dampner on this thread, but can you believe prior to May 2009 the Gurkhas had no right to settle in Britain due to them allegedly having insufficient ties to britain and some bullshit about international law. The bottom line should be anyone who is willing to and fights for a country has the right to live in that country, something no doubt those who never fight can understand. The Gurkhas prior to May 2009 had the support of the British people, but the politicians still held to their stance of no entry. If any immigrant is to be welcomed here with open arms, it is the gurkhas who have fought and died for a country prior to 2009 could never live here, how is that for service.

I met a bunch of them years ago when I was in the mob, and what a people, dignified and honourable springs immediately to mind, they off duty are what they are on duty. Dressed tidily in suits and ties, they marched to the Naafi whilst everyone else just bimbled in jeans and tee shirts. Once inside when the usual fight broke out, the sort of fight where the police dog got thrown through the window, they kept themselves out of it, although many a drunken asshole squadie tried to get them involved, they defended but never got involved, took many hits but kept out of it, for they were there to enjoy the entertainment, not fight, and they are it seems able to seperate friend from enemy.

I have ultimate admiration for the Gurkhas on duty and off, and can only wish some of our own would take their example and rid the rabid drunken British fighting mentality that just fights for the fun of it when it's not warranted.

Brits abroad, tribalist wankers that only have a passport to give home a bit of peace and quiet now and again. They apall me !

I hadn't heard of that when I worked with them, and never asked.  I have heard of it since, so I don't know if it is true.

I have also heard this about the Japanese samurai and their Katana's.

President Obama on Libya??

Ah, I see what the problem here is.

It`s a perception problem.

President Obama stopped a genocide(anti) and neo-cons see it as wanting to wage war(pro).

Nope, wanting to wage war, being pro war ie. for war, as opposed to peace, war monger etc.,would be tricking us into invading a nation using fraud.

That would be you and your dearest-bush-cheney-dick and Iraq.

Ya know from a certain perspective, a doctor removing a wort might look like a man cutting another with a knife. But if you weren`t a loud-mouthed busy-body ass, looking to be a pest, you`d take a moment to see that it`s one man helping another.

If you were an unsophisticated douche-bag ass-hole who had something personal against the doctor and screamed out,"run,he`s got a knife!" or "look,he`s cutting something off that man there!",then most folks would ignore you as an attention seeking flake who needs a bitch slapping.

A fair point, fairly made, Mark. I'll take it over to the stupid war thread, Steve started.

Getting back to this topic, there are a number of things about this story where questions remain unanswered. I imagine that the Brits do all the due diligence before HRH pins a medal like this on someone, but I'm curious why this guy was alone in the fight for so long. How far was that sentry post from the main encampment?
