What about math vs spelling? Basic math means nothing. Students who can't understand advanced math don't graduate. If students can't spell simple words, they're saved by Microsoft Word. For some people, spelling is more difficult than advanced math and science. Plenty of people who can't spell earn high salaries. Unfortunately, knowing the difference between your and you're means nothing.

I dunno. I took French. I wanted to be able to talk to all the French Canadian girls slithering around the resort where I worked in the Summer. But it didn't help much. I still could hardly understand them, and they could hardly understand me. Argh!

Manhattan is a place where you'll hear half a dozen foreign languages every day if you get around. I learned to recognize some of them by their rhythm and intonation. But one day I overheard a couple talking, and I just couldn't place it. I knew what it wasn't, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Finally I introduced myself and asked politely if I might inquire what language they were speaking.

They were from Spain. It was Spanish. But I doubt they would have had any better luck with my 'Rican friends than I had with the French Canadians girls. After that, whenever anyone asked me what language I thought they should take I told them Latin!

Mandarin.... from the cooks I work with, they are from all over the place, Singapore, Thailand, mainland China.... but the one language they have in common is mandarin

No.

1) Students continually use the wrong word because they trust MS Word to choose for them. It makes them look stupid.
2) Poor writing skills is the number one complaint about applicants in field after field after field in study after study after study.
3) Many employers, and an increasing number, are giving writing exams as part of the application process.

Few people who can't spell earn high salaries. It's hardly the norm.

Computer usage I see as the dumbing down of people in their language use, for they are relying on word and punctuation programs to sort it all out for them, just to think, their own language.

When I have to write an essay, I am constantly at war with MS Word, it high lighting my use of my language as if it was wrong. I have noticed though since using computers for my work, my use of my written language has taken a nose dive, so in answer to my need often when I submit essays, they are written in ink on paper, the copper plate writing I used to do so well before computers and that with an ancient fountain pen I found and restored for the purpose. As to the use of words, well an old Collins dictionary and thesaurus I have to hand, stuff the internet, because it is often wrong.

But writing I see as a dying art form, a craft and skill from the past descending into just communication, words are becoming cheap.

What's the premise here? That you are expected to know only the one or the other?

At my job, I am expected to figure out an analysis method and perform the analysis. Then I am to present the data in such a way that it is very quickly understood by directors and VPs that have little time. Graphs and tables that anticipate and answer any possible questions. And woe betide me if I ever misspell a word.

This is not math or English. This is knowing how to USE math and English.

You seem to be asking what's the bare minimum you need to do to squeak by. Cut that out. Figure out what you WANT to be, not the lowest target you can hit and still be okay.

Oddly enough, I actually TEACH this stuff first, then have you put it into practice.

I find it works better than the "just write" mythology from pubic school.
