watching it live on necn, strangely compelling, amazing coverage. listen to your weatherman and get in the basement when he tells you

Pretty damned good coverage... Looks like one major thunder cell is headed my way (Cape Ann) can't yet tell if there's  tornado warning associated with the northerly storm though. But I'll tell ya, from what I've seen in the past of weather radar in the past with hurricanes and severe storms, that cell just north of route 2 looks mighty nasty.
Anyway, sounds like you're taking this seriously (as you should). And I wish you luck chastity.
Gonna get back to watching it and keeping the kids calm (they're kinda worried about their mom, who lives in salem and has phone issues due to comcast right now).
Peace

we have tornadoes in England, once every 10 years or so a few chimney pots get blown off. the shit going down over there is crazy

I feel shortchanged.

The weather said we would have a thunderstorm and I am still waiting!   Enough of this madness! I want rain!

Ugh, glad to be in CA instead of tornado alley. So many tears. One of my friends lost her house in Alabama. She and her family of four rode out the storm in the hallway as the house was literally torn apart from around them. Her human family all survived, though two of them were hospitalized with injuries. Sadly only part of their pets survived.

They fled the house without even shoes, literally the clothes on their backs, and not much was even recoverable. The fact that several guinea pigs and rats even survived the destruction is amazing. There was no time to move them to safe quarters, and seeing as how the house went from a house to a bare slab in minutes, there was no where to put them that would have been safe. The family of four, plus the dog were lifted off the ground by the force of the wind.

Stay safe folks. My heart aches for all of you in danger this day and in the past month or two.

I'm in California and we've been under tornado warnings most of the afternoon (very rare for us, nothing confirmed to have touched down) - along with severe thunder/lightening/hail.  It's been an insane afternoon.  Two tornados hit some somewhat rural areas last week.

My best to those in MA.  Springfield was hit today:  http://www.weather.com/outlook/videos/springfield-tornado-from-5th-floor-20825#20823

here in Wisconsin, we average 21 tornadoes a year. So far this year we have had 20 and the tornado season starts today, June 1st.

The chances of a tornado hitting-  are not as high as you would guess.

I seldom worried about a tornado in Chicagoland--  and even less here in PA.    (PA tho- seems to have a low disaster % compared to other regions...unless you count a a flood in 1972 and one in 1936. )

I think hurricanes and earth quakes are worse.

we ended up getting throttled with lightning for about an hour... but it's now past the breakwater. My son and I went down to the state pier to watch the purple lightning strikes on the water as it left the harbor, it was beautiful. people on my in-law;s street in west springfield lost their roof and down the street a hous got knocked three feet off it's foundation and I guess about a mile away one house was leveled. That bridge they're showing with the tipped over tractor trailer truck is less than a mile from my former in-laws. The storm sucked for them of course. But they were REALLY tickled to hear we were watching and thinking of them.
And I guess it cut a swatch through the woods all the way from springfield to route 84 where it was still flipping cars as it headed off into the woods heading southeast.
the second cell headed towards us but faded to a lightning thing. I only hope that the casualties were minimal. All I have heard about was one person in West Springfield killed by lightning....

Oops strike that. The stanley cup just wrapped up and they say 4 are dead. And wow... they are showing MAJOR damage to lots of homes now in West Springfield right now on channel 7 WHDH.com

Hey... anybody from Albany reading this tonight? I am really curious what happened in your neck of the woods. Because Albany isn't really that far away at all.

There were also some tornado warnings in Kansas. A couple of weeks ago, Reading Kansas (only a few miles from where I live) was hit by a tornado. Then Joplin Missouri. When I was watching the weather channel earlier this evening, they said there were tornado warnings in the western US, the central US, and the eastern US all at the same time. Tornadoes have really been bad so far this year.

angelikaJ -> RE: If you're in central mass and haven't seen the weather ... you may want to... (6/2/2011 6:13:36 PM)

It hit less than 1/2 mile from my house.

Our town did not have any fatalities to date.
