Status: offline 		This man is one of America's hidden jewels. Native American John Trudel was a former Chairman of the American Indian Movement and has had a wild ride. He led the occupation of Alcatraz Island 1969 -70.
  Had some terrible 'tragedies' while taking AIM to the Capital (see wiki).
Went on to be one of the most seminal Native American Poets and QUITE an evocative musician. Bob Dylan called Aka Graffiti Man one of the best albums he's ever heard back in 86.
Found this video/slideshow on tube tonight the first 30 or so seconds are I think is the shaman song or something like that, and then it segues into Graffiti Man and well ,,, I won't spoil it, but you're missing a whole cultural point of view you're not going to be offered through normal channels

There aren't many artists the man doesn't actually want you yo hear. John however is one of them.

Status: offline 		Stickman was an excellent read.  There's a very good documentary called simply "Trudell" that i highly recommend.  Thanks for the link!

edited to add:  JT's works always seems to come along at just the right moment for me. :)

Status: offline 		I discovered him ENTIRELY BY ACCIDENT. I was at a 4th of July Dead show in Buffalo in 86 and during the break between the Dead and Dylan/Petty (last time Dylan or Petty ever opened for em)... They piped in Farm Aid and I think what happened first was Lou Reed was onstage and he did like a three song set. Then Trudel came on stage and did a sort of suite from aka Graffiti Man. I have never just heard something and have every syllable carve itself in my memory like that on the first listen. For years I could still hear
"Yeah you take love me tender, blue suede shoes, I want you I need you I love you. And then you take pat Boone on some beach in his white bucks singing loveletters in the sand. And I ask you. What's real baby"
    I think I swallowed the joint I was smoking I laughed so hard. Yeah he is completely unlike anybody I have encountered. Never heard or read anything that didn't have that clarity and texture. ... anuway, thanks for the leads, I will definitely try and hunt them down I heard crazy horse for the first time tonight and was amazed at the way he nuances between the kind frisco sound shit and tradition native  music stylings. And obviously he did Crazy Horse proud in relating what I assume was the man's philosophy about the land, the earth, life.

Sorry, I've got a copy of that CD somewhere, but it's never done a lot for me.

His book Stickman literally fell out of the sky and hit me on the head.  Mid-90's, i was cleaning out the aviation section in a bookstore i worked at when my dusting and alphabetizing efforts knocked this off of a higher shelf.  :)

Okay... we're of differing opinions from time to time I'm good with that. Then there's the fact that the whole Native American you have some different exposure to than I.
Whatever, i'm not recruiting, but rather exposing friends to something I am dead sure they wouldn't get here any other way. In my circle dof deadhead friends outside of here they're really into it.
i got that "native american pink floyd" reference from a conversation with a friend who's going to turn his music composition students. He teaches at Berkley School of Music... they're pretty well known. he was actually shocked he'd never experienced the guy.

Well bear in mind my favourite van sandt album is the one he did with Michael Monroe around the turn of the '90s. No question Trudell is a fine composer, but as a songwriter he just leaves me pretty cold.

Ummm yeah,,, see I remember when that one compared himself to Flo and Eddie ...In my mind, the only guys LIKE flo and eddie AREN'T Musicians at all .... They're Penn and Teller
