Fightdirecto -> Pizzaman GOP Pres candidate confuses Declaration of Independance with Constitution (5/24/2011 5:28:23 PM)

During GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain’s campaign announcement on Saturday, the former pizza executive took a moment to lecture the country on its need to “reread the Constitution”:

quote:

We don’t need to rewrite the Constitution of the United States of America, we need to reread the Constitution and enforce the Constitution...And I know that there are some people that are not going to do that, so for the benefit of those who are not going to read it because they don’t want us to go by the Constitution, there’s a little section in the Constitution that talks about “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

You know, those ideals that we live by, we believe in, your parents believed in, they instilled in you. When you get to the part about “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” don’t stop there, keep reading. Cause that’s when it says “when any form of government becomes destructive of those ideals, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.” We’ve got some altering and some abolishing to do!

Cain really should have taken his own advice, however, before he decided to lecture the entire country about the Constitution. The phrase “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” does not appear anywhere in the Constitution’s text. Nor does the Constitution include a phrase about the right of the people to alter or abolish a government that is destructive of their ideals. Both of those phrases appear in the Declaration of Independence, which, in case Mr. Cain is not aware, is actually an entirely different document than the Constitution — written over ten years earlier and is NOT a law anywhere in the United Sttes of America.

Sadly, Cain’s ignorance of the nation’s founding documents makes him well-suited to compete in a GOP presidential primary. Republicans have called everything from Social Security to Medicare to child labor laws unconstitutional, and they’ve even pretended that the Constitution allows them to strip Americans of their citizenship. So Cain needs to look no further than his own party if he wants to find people who are more interested in rewriting the Constitution than in actually reading it.

well, with the phrase "abolish or alter the government" in his speech, then he will have the tea party supporting him.

Funny how the ultra conservative right seem to be all for abolishing the government rather than letting voters decide what is the best for the country.

I know who he can get as a running mate, Sharron Angle, remember her "2nd amendment remedies" statements?

Dumb as a bag a hammers.

I find this to be common with many of those who follow the teabagger movement, and Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh... they do not know the constitution, they do not know that medicare is a government program, and they do not understand the Bill of Rights.

This is not the first time I have seen people from the Right that thought the Declaration of Independence was a part of the Constitution....

Julia,

What I love is when they start of their rant about how the Constitution is sacred and needs to be taken word for word, blah blah.  Then they turn around and want to add a Constitutional amendment for whatever whim they have at the time.

But they also deride the Elastic Clause as being the tool of "activist judges" (whatever the fuck that means), unless of course they are Right Wing activist jurists.

Doesn't the Constitution actually lay out the process for adding an amendment? Things like the vote for women, for an example? I use that one, because your inability to do anything but snark, makes an argument for repeal.

juliaoceania -> RE: Pizzaman GOP Pres candidate confuses Declaration of Independance with Constitution (5/24/2011 7:10:16 PM)

I suppose you are right, Rich, but it amazes me how blatantly they can be for an amendment under one set of circumstances, yet flip flop on the same amendment under other circumstances

So which was he? A governor or a member of the board of directors?

He was in fact the latter, at the Kansas City branch Federal Reserve Bank.

There are seven members of the Board of Governors and they all work at the HQ Fed building in DC.

Cain would have been either a class B or class C member of the board of directors at the KC Fed, which are chosen from the community, usually business folks, with the occasional civil rights lawyer or non-profit president to keep the face of the spirit of of things on it. Class A members are from the banking community. The chairman of this group is chosen by this group, and it is a nice title that means nothing.

The president of a Federal Reserve bank is chosen by the Board of Governors in DC, and that is the job that actually has anything to do with operations of the Federal Reserve system.

Hopefully, we'll get at least SOME value out of his candidacy... Like pizza handouts (maintaining  of course a proper legal distance from the polling place) .... course only way you got a prayer of getting a slice is by living in New Hampshire .... or Iowa
