The bestest parties for me are when I invite lots of different types of people, and tell them to bring a couple of friends.... you just have to remember to put more food out when necessary, make a few drinks when the mood calls for it, and give others permission to mix at your bar. I also give people permission to share whatever drink or food they feel like, although it isn't necessary either.
People are much happier in my experience when you encourage them to be at home, and do not hover worrying about them having a good time.
Some of my themes have included Festivus around Christmas, New Years Eve fireworks (could see them from my highrise), divination party (people could read tarot, or other ethnic forms of divination), Grand Prix party, and Halloween downtown.
My mom's agent is really awesome, and he has lots of kids, some of them my son's age. He believes in ghosts, and my sister loves ghosts too, so I was thinking perhaps I could incorporate that into the theme... themes are great because they give you games you can play, etc.
