Punching them dead in the goddamn face works if you don't have duct tape handy.

Helpful hint.

I had the guy coming down aisle in the grocery store shouting into  his headset.  Everybody in the store knows his soon to be ex wife is a bitch and tyring to bleed him dry.

Last time I took the bus from london to newcastle (about 7 hours) the obnoxious bint sitting next to me was shouting down her phone for almost half an hour, making call after call. So I joined in the conversation. She said something, I replied. I'd never met her before and had no idea what she was talking about. I didn't care either.

She told me I was driving her nuts, so I said "now you know how I feel". She moved to the back of the bus out of my way, lol

I love that. Joining the conversation is my choice in the grocery store checkout line, even if I'm always that guy talking to his wife from the produce section, oblivious to the folks moving around me.

There's a time and a place, and a happy medium, where one person isn't inflicting themselves on others, and I can still get a quick rundown on how white grapefruit is yellow, and red grapefruit is more orange-ish yellow.

By way of full disclosure:

I've spoken so loudly on my cellphone in public places that I've had to be shushed. I've done it more than once. The smart money says I'll do it again and again and again.

So let me just say, on behalf of loud cellphone talkers everywhere, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry I've done it before. I'm sorry I'll do it again!" It really isn't personal though! I'm sure everybody mulling around me listlessly on the subway car or nervously tippy-tapping their feet and checking their watch at the airport or jibber jabbering about their own nonsense around me in line for the movie was a wonderful person fully deserving of respect and dignity. And my loud conversations were not meant to irritate or ruffle or, heaven forbid!, rob them of their dignity as human beings! I just have a lot to say! And I think my friends are pretty fucking awesome while the schlubs, scrubs, schmucks and ragamuffins assembled in bleary eyed congregation around me I could kind of take or leave. I'm not being a dick, I'm just really honestly pretty self-absorbed and modern life is awesome for the self-absorbed, as we have so many ways to totally absorb ourselves even out in the maddening crowd.

So guys, I'm sorry! For the record, when someone "shushes" me I give them a pleasant, embarrassed half-smile and keep my voice down. No stabbing, like, ever. I don't believe stabbing has any place in polite society! Though behind closed doors among consenting adults is a different matter!

I really wish I could find humor in this way of thinking...really, I do.

I guess it's just all the times I've been subjected to the "self-absorbed" "modern life" crowd that can't wait until they get home (or at least out of a packed subway/train car) before they decide to call their bff to let them know how totally awesome/disasterous whatever blip on their life screen is.

Reminds me of the time I was waiting at the DMV to register my car. There was about 50 people all packed packed in like sardines in a little room clutching our number tickets trying hard to be patient when Mr. "I'm so fucking important" decided to conduct business via his cell phone, regardless of the numerous "No cell phones please" signs posted.
His call relvolved around some oh-so important piece of equipment that just NEEDED to be at a certain site by a certain time...all discussed in a loud nasally voice (I wanted to go over and pinch his nose just to see if he could still talk). The rest of us sat through about 10 minutes of his bs when finally, an elderly woman in front of him turned around, got right in his face and said "Young man, could you do us all a favor and shut the hell up."
He tried to ignore her, but she wasn't having any of that. She asked him if his mother knew what a rude, obnoxious and...yes....self-absorbed young man she raised.

At that point, we all started to clap...loudly. There were even a few wolf-whistles. The man in question got up and took his business outside. The person who was called next gave up his number to the elderly woman for having the guts to call the ass out.

It was brilliant.

Me too! You've always seemed sharp, thoughtful, bright, and pretty awesome. It kind of bums me out to know that I participate in an activity that gets under your skin so much. I try to be as courteous as I can to those around me, but sometimes it just gets out of hand and I assume that's the way it is for most of us loud-talkers.

Beyond that, I don't know what to say! I hold doors open for people all the time, I help people with their bags at the supermarket when they look like they need help, I remove my hat when I meet a lady...but I have this single habit that I may never be able to break which occasionally puts me at sixes and sevens with polite society!

Wow, does it take that long? I usually just hop on the train and it's 2 hours...

Thank you...I'd say the same about you, given some of your posts I've read. That being said, I'm sure we both know what happens when you assume.

Let me offer you another example....

In one of my jobs, I have to communicate via radio with people. When I first started, I admit I used what, at the time, was my "regular" voice...rather loud mainly because of a very slight ear issue. I had a co-worker come off the road and pull me aside. He said to me "Word of advice, drop it down a few octaves."
It wasn't until I had the chance to listen to myself that I realized just how loud I came across.

Live and learn. What's the best way to get someone to actually listen to what you have to say? Speak in a very quiet and clear voice.

All good...keep it up (except for that last habit bit) and make your mamma proud!

YES!!!!! (Note the five.)

You know 2 things that just puzzle me:

quote:

She had not stopped talking since the train pulled out of Oakland, California, 16 hours before it reached Salem, Oregon, when a passenger confronted her about the talking. That's when Beard got "aggressive," KATU reports, and conductors stopped the train so that police could remove her and charge her with disorderly conduct.

Which cell phone battery will last for 16 hours? She definitely didn't have an iPhone, ha! And then how can you talk for 16 hours? First of all what do you have to say for freaking 16 hours, 2nd how do you physically do it? I mean without your voice just giving up and you turning hoarse and developing a sore throat?

The "quiet zones" in public trains in a lot of European countries simply have no cell phone reception, so people can't yap on their cells, if I'm doing a longer trip and I want a nap or a bit of peace and quiet, I usually go into those and then check by leaving the quiet car if there are any important missed calls, telling people I am on a train tends to do the trick, people I work with understand I can't talk (you don't talk about confidential client info or the next strategic move in a place where a bunch of people can overhear you), private calls, same thing, I call them mention I am on a train, they understand that I won't be saying much as there are ears around me , so they do the talking. I might do the occasional call with "We're a bit delayed, I'll be there at approximately....."

I found it really funny when people discussed their sex life in public places on cell phones, especially if they try and get a promise out of the other person to not breathe a word to anybody - yeah mate, you just said in front of roughly 50 people that you got an STD, that's a big secret... The other day there was a lot of ranting and raving outside, screaming and yelling almost like a fight but only one voice, so I looked out of the window, on the other side of the road was a guy breaking up with his gf (I assume so, or else the "bloody fucking skanky bitch slut" was really a diseased dog and he was into bestiality) - why on earth she didn't just simply hang the phone up was beyond me, anybody yelling at me like that on the phone would get the mighty hang up.

I find it a bit puzzling that people don't seem to value their privacy, if you're talking on a mobile in public, people can and will overhear you, a lot of my friends don't live nearby, so we stay in contact via the phone or emails, I rather talk to them in private at home than have strangers knowing about what kind of day I had...

My thoughts on this are: if you know this is a tendency of yours and you continue to not change it... it indicates a certain level of not being self aware.
You are okay with that?

It doesn't take much to focus your attention to time and place...the awareness of where you are within your surroundings and who is around you.

I just love this............absolutely LOVE IT!!!!!!

And I totally HATE people that feel they simply NEED to be talking on their fucking cell phone everywhere. Call me old.........really I am cool with that........but there was a time when phones where only in our homes, businesses and phone booths and connected with wires to the structure. If you needed to make a phone call you entered one of those structures and MOST intelligent people did their level best to actually AVOID being overheard and making their personal business, everyone else's business.

I think that talking on a cell phone in a public place is most often, just fucking RUDE.
