I have strong feelings on this one, but I choose to keep my feelings quiet.   I ask those who I love and respect of their feelings.

The question I have is of the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo in light of our take down of bin Laden.   McCain is a man who has served this country with great honor and has given more than any of us can comprehend.  He has said that this didn't help us catch bin Laden and he has also suggested that this end does not justify torture of prisoners we hold.

Where do you stand?   I will answer my own question much later.

I was floored  to see the guy slammed.  I dont think he would make a good prez- but when he was insulted over this topic- I was like- for real??     Who is this guy!

AFAIK, Rick Santorum is the only idiot that has called McCain on this.  Santorum has stated that the intelligence used to catch bin Laden came from torture, not standard questioning, and McCain says the opposite.

McCain has claimed that he spoke directly with intelligence officials, as a sitting US Senator.  Santorum, having been voted out of office in a landslide, is a private citizen with no more access to intelligence than you or I.  I have no reason to doubt McCain based on what Santorum said.

I personally find torture to be reprehensible, and feel that we would lose more a a nation than anything that could be gained from it.

I suspect that the Bush administration wanted to get answers quickly and pressured operatives to get info, while greenlighting torture.  Another case where their impetuosity caused trouble.

Except that Dick Cheney was there (in office, not in the room) when the orginal intelligence was gathered and knows first hand how it was obtained, and has said enhanced interrogation was used. There is plenty of reason to doubt McCain.

IrishMist -> RE: I have a serious question for all... (5/18/2011 8:40:23 PM)

I will most likely have the extremely unpopular opinion here...but...here it is.

Personally, I don't care HOW the information was obtained, or WHO knew about it or authorized it. In my eyes, it's the end result that matters.

I do not know how honorable McCain is, but I agree with him.

Santorum: McCain 'Doesn't Understand' Interrogation

This jackass more or less said that a man who had been tortured didn't understand torture...

tazzygirl -> RE: I have a serious question for all... (5/18/2011 9:53:07 PM)

Santorum

Google his name.

DesFIP -> RE: I have a serious question for all... (5/19/2011 4:52:24 AM)

The end does not justify the means. If you claim to uphold democracy, then you can't operate above the law. And cruel and unusual punishment is not acceptable.

With that said, I still wouldn't want him as President.

No offense, willbe, but Cheney has demonstrated that he has a unique perspective on the truth in that he feels it is an instrument that can be tweaked or ruptured if it makes him look better.  Since leaving office, his sole objectives have been to defend his own performance and criticize Obama's.

I would consider his statements only if he was uninvolved, which is not the case here.

Absolutely, I think while I might not agree with his political views 100%, McCain has shown himself as a class act. Nobody can doubt what he went through, his opinion counts a lot, plus isn't torture of prisoners something civilized nations strongly condemn? How can you say it's wrong for others but OK for one country? That doesn't make sense.

I recall seeing a few of McCain's videos when he ran in 2008, I was impressed, in one some clueless woman said she heard that Obama is a Muslim and not an American, McCain corrected her and said he is running against him and believes he can do a better job than Obama, but Obama's not a Muslim and he's an American Patriot, who claims something else is lying.

He's got integrity, you have to give him that!

But it is quite nice to see that Santorum is now backtracking a bit...

Not really,  His statement could be summed up as "I think that McCain is a good man who I respect, but his views are still wrong."

LadyConstanze -> RE: I have a serious question for all... (5/19/2011 5:38:32 AM)

But from "He has no clue" to "Oh but I meant no disrespect and he deserves respect" is quite a bit of backtracking... At least I would view it as such.

ResidentSadist -> RE: I have a serious question for all... (5/19/2011 10:02:52 AM)

Torture . . . let's see if I can get some perspective on this by looking at it up close and personal.

If I found out a team of guys wanted to kill my family and I caught one of them, would I torture them to get information about the rest of the team?  . . .  fuck yes.  And when I caught the rest, I would kill them all just as they had planned to do to me and mine.

And what if the torture isn't working real well?  Well, then they aren't doing it right.

This in a nutshell.

Arpig -> RE: I have a serious question for all... (5/19/2011 2:33:11 PM)

Torture is wrong.

No exceptions, no debate. It's wrong and we (the West) should not do it. We are supposed to be the good guys.
