I said I "would" accept his word as gospel but found it difficult seeing as how most people see a connection between a computer mouse and an actual mouse or mechanical mouse.

I have no doubt that it was its resemblence to a mouse that inspired the tech to call it that.

oh yeah, this looks just like a mouse...wish i knew your dealer.

Though it does seem awfully convenient that a cursor was called a CAT...and yet it seems nobody knows why...doncha think? Smacks of urban legend to me.

Not really. A CAT scan today stands for Computer Aided Tomography. Design programs are CAD, Computer Aided Drafting.

So. . . the cursor was most likely a Computer Aided T. . . something or other.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Computer input pointing device (5/17/2011 8:36:21 PM)

actully i read somewhere that when they were designing the system, they called the cursor a "bug". i'll see if i can find the reference online, but i think it was in some geek magazine.

anyway, why would a cursor be a computer "aided" anything?

Or I suppose that CAT could stand for Capacitance Activated Table.

I dont know..Ive never examined Minnie's privates. ;)

Why not?

Another thought, it took a while since I have a "cordless."

If the clicky buttons are the ears and the cord is the tail, why does the tail come out of the forehead?

The buttons are the opposite end of the tail. But actually in my post I wasnt saying the buttons were ears, I was saying if you imagine ears on top of them along with the shape plus the tail, there is definitely resemblence...without drugs! In fact you may be toking if you think the tail comes out of the same end as the buttons!

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Computer input pointing device (5/17/2011 8:52:10 PM)

found it. in engelbart's own words from a 1968 conference.

quote:

The circle in the box indicates the character to be used for the "bug" (the tracking spot), which alternates between the characters uparrow and plus.

however, there is no mention of a CAT in the document.

draw your own conclusion, but this settles it as far as i am concerned.

Not toking. That is the way the mice first came out. The cord came out the bottom, and now it comes out their head.

I do suppose that XY positioner is not as catchy as Mouse.

Termyn8or -> RE: Computer input pointing device (5/17/2011 9:29:42 PM)

OK then, the buTTONS are buTTOCKS then. Does that mean a scroll mouse is a male ?

The other problem is that I had to get two pointing devices because I wanted optical. I guess the old style ones were blind ?

So did I replace two blind mice, or two blind mouses ?

We WILL get to the bottom of this !

T^T

Ummm. . . no. No they do not.

Maybe where you live you do not have mice. But the computer device looks nothing like Jerry or Speedy.

I think all the mouses Made in China, so there is nothing different between here & there
May be the one who inveted them was hunting a mouse, or was a mouse to be named by him,

SternSkipper -> RE: Computer input pointing device (5/18/2011 10:46:28 AM)

I know how that guy feels ... in another life, I invested spanking and I had no idea why they called it a hand, We just called it that... later the product received many equipment upgrades
