http://www.nwcn.com/news/With-gas-costs-high-Obama-to-speed-oil-production-121836474.html

" WASHINGTON, D.C. - Amid growing public unhappiness over gas prices, President Barack Obama is directing his administration to ramp up U.S. oil production by extending existing leases in the Gulf of Mexico and off Alaska's coast and holding more frequent lease sales in a federal petroleum reserve in Alaska. But the moves won't calm spiraling prices at the pump any time soon. "

Good idea now? If so, why wasn't it a good idea a few years back? If not, why is it being proposed?

Gee, I don't know.

You think it might have had something to do with all those pelicans coated in oil?

Theres an election in 2012 and $100 oil, $4.00 gas and continued double digit inflation in food prices dont make a great record to campaign on.

RML, I agree that there is a big concern about the environment, especially with the most recent spill.

Will, it does look very campaign motivated, but doesn't this alienate some voters too? It is not going to do anything to gas prices right now, so I am not sure how it will effect sentiments right now.

Actually it will have some positive impact on oil and gas prices very quickly...as soon as there is evidence that whatever is ultimately passed is real. More refining capacity would have even more rapid impact, but moving toward the center environmentally is critical to his reelection chances. If and when he gets past that he can turn back to bringing about the economic disaster his real policies will engender.

No, but a stock market on a tremendous rise, slowing unemployment, killing a wanted terrorist and not having any serious Republican competition means that he doesn't have to do anything in an attempt to appease voters.

He's a lock.

Obama is smooth like a sea of knives.... he is no lock

First he pissed off everyone who likes affordable food, energy and transportation by choking off our oil fields

Now he is pissing off the radical environmentalists by claiming he is opening a few fields up

And no the economy isnt all that ducky. Relative inflation is high, the housing market is continuing its collapse, unemployment is high and stagnant...

The stock market is neither here nor there, it could take a shit tomorrow and many think that it will

Its nice that we got Osama and all though Obamas big achievement in that is that he didnt fuck it up

And again, if theye showing any consistency at all, he only managed to piss off the 'hug a terrorist' crowd by utterly ignoring the diplomacy route, not knocking or getting a warrant. No trial, etc

Pure Conjecture at this point Sanity.

Stock market crashes can happen during any term under anyone's watch.

Hey, I know...

Let us blame the New Conductor for the previous Conductor's train wreck. I mean, it couldn't be the Dispatchers fault, or the person who lays down the track in the first place.

Or even the passengers, baggage handlers, repairmen.... just the Conductor.

Exactly. Obama has been anti-big oil from day one of his political career. Only one reason for him to flip-flop on that now...upcoming election.

The reason it will have some positive impact on gas prices very quickly is rooted in futures trading.

Exactly. Obama knows full well that very little, if any, new drilling is going to occur before the 2012 election and if he wins he'll likely simply revoke the new drilling licenses.
