I appreciated the links. I hope the new ammo does as well in the field as it does in the "tests". (Don't nail Me for that one. We all know that "tests" don't always translate to performance.)

Mental health care? Yes. That blows. Problem is, we're just churning out too many Vets to adequately handle the situation. I'm starting to think we should try to handle it by putting Vets on some form of Tri-Care Remote. It could work the same way as when there are active duty military members and dependents who can't access health care when there is no hospital where they are assigned. I'm not saying write a blank check, but there's got to be something better than what's happening now.

She retired? I don't blame her. She'd have probably done her twenty and gotten her full benefits had she not been forced to interrupt her service. Now, she has a job that she probably likes and is continuing her education, too. Why give that up now to put in the last two years? The prospects might not be the same after a two year stint.

Ceased training? No shock there. They don't know how to handle it yet. They're going to make a big mess of the whole thing if they don't have similar policies across all branches of service. The military has always been behind in this area. I have doubts that they are going to get it right before the private sector.

I've said it for years and I'll frakking say it again: the Army KNOWS why these vets are having trouble, and the solution is simple. The DOD has not and will not implement it for one simple reason- it's expensive.
Although, if the numbers of female soldiers suiciding went up by any drastic mark the funds would be made available (AND pronto!!!) to address it... our culture is funny that way (just look at the long list of federally funded services available for women dealing with sexual assault and domestic violence issues, with nothing available in the way of tax payer funded services for sexually assaulted and battered men).

the constitution once upon a time had a conscientious objector clause....oops did I say that?

what they require those kids to do over there especially combined with drugs its no wonder they are going over the edge.

I believe that a major part of the suicide rate is caused by lack of personnel in the military. They go over and over and over 5, 6 or so times without sufficient break in between. It has put a strain on their personal and professional relationships, besides all the crap that they see and do. But the American public doesn't want to fund more personnel and doesn't want to fund more medical care including mental health for them, so the problem becomes one for the individual to take on all by himself.

By the way, welcome TB for the forums. Known each other for years. Even before I came here.

It's not all easy. Yes, some of this could be eliminated by funding. That's not the whole picture, though. Money is a big part, yes, but so is capacity. There's no way they could have expected this. The system is overflowing in the ratio of mental health patients compared to the ratio of practitioners. It's not like we just had psychiatrists and other mental health care workers waiting in the wings. The demand went up immediately almost overnight and it's been a catch up situation for a decade. It's been a snowball effect for ten years. The waiting list gets backed up more and more and creates a snowball effect.

We still don't treat mental health the same way that we do physical health. When a guy gets shipped home because he lost a leg, it's something you can see. He gets bumped in triage and extended services because it's right there in front of you. That's not how PTSD, mental illness, suicidal tendencies work. If the service member isn't up front and communicative about the problem, they never see it. This is over and above the stigma of any mental health issue. If a person wants a continued military career, you might not want to tell the truth on those electronic surveys. Once you've been home sixty days, you fill out a questionnaire in an email.

It doesn't help all of them. We lose eighteen war veterans a day to suicide. Eighteen!

Yes, I know we've made improvements. It's just not quite good enough.
