NASA: Pluto is a planet.

Of course it is and always was. In my opinion a planet is a non-star body that has acquired a - perchance somewhat flattened - round shape due to its own gravity. I moreover distinguish between bound (orbiting) planets that are gravitationally bound to - usually one - star; and free planets that move through space without being gravitationally bound to a star. Any other non-star object in my opinion is a planetoid, i.e. an object that exerts insufficient gravity on its own mass for it to assume a round shape.

I don't know what made you bring this up... but I am in agreement. When I was in second grade I was taught that there are NINE planets and there names are... (drum roll please)... Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus (pause for my Beavis and Butthead impersonation: heh, heh, heh... you said 'your anus'... heh, heh, heh), Neptune and PLUTO.

I don't care what any Astronimical Union or whatever says. At forty five I can already see that I'm going to be a crotchety old many grumping about (amongst other things) new fangled gizmos we didn't need when I was a kid, disrespectful youth... and the fact that Pluto is a planet.

ETA: okay, now that I bothered to look at the link, I see I have one less thing to grump about. Oh well, I'm sure I'll still have government cutbacks in my social security on my list.

ETA (again): okay, now that I've had my coffee and have re-read the link, I am back to grumping about Pluto not being a planet.

Where the fuck did my danish go?

I am satisfied that it is not, it might make it be 70,000 more planets under the same auspices.

I cannot name the ones we got now.

Rule -> RE: Pluto is a planet (5/11/2011 6:56:55 AM)

Earth is a planet. Never mind the other 70 thousand.

By the way: them 500+ exoplanets that astronomers claim to have discovered, do not exist.

mnottertail -> RE: Pluto is a planet (5/11/2011 6:58:06 AM)

Yeah, neither does the atmosphere.

These bastard spent good money teaching me Pluto was a planet. Then because of some variable it's now not. How can you do that to pluto. How can you do that to me. If it was classified as a planet for more than a generation then it should be grandfathered in. Give my planet back.

First the brontosaurus and now this. They fucked the flintstones up.

Were you aware of the fact that scientists at one time wanted to rename Uranus? True! Because of all the jokes, one group wanted to rename it Urectum  [8D]

ETA: As for the OP, yeah Pluto is a planet! Also Mickey's dog...[8|]

So you are telling me that my very educated mother just served us nine pizzas (again)? Dang. I was digging the nachos.

Nope. But I heard whispers. It's a conspiracy to fuck up peoples childhoods.

BKSir -> RE: Pluto is a planet (5/11/2011 12:05:50 PM)

You spend 34 years telling me it's a planet, you don't just up and change your mind one day. Pluto is a planet, it always will be (unless it suddenly disappears or something).

kdsub -> RE: Pluto is a planet (5/11/2011 12:49:11 PM)

If you have not seen THIS then enjoy.

This is the guy who first said Pluto was not a planet

FR

Are Pluto's moons moons or moonlets or Plutlets?

outhere69 -> RE: Pluto is a planet (5/11/2011 4:14:18 PM)

I liked the following:

"NASA's two fingers to the IAU can be found today on its homepage, and demonstrates the agency's commitment to extraterrestrial US soil:"
