mummyman321 -> Sensory Deprivation & Heightened Awareness (5/10/2011 4:14:37 PM)

Sensory Deprivation, Yesterday I posted the Spice or No Spice thread with the my focus being sensory overload. This thread takes a 180 degree turn in it’s focus is more on the removal of sensory inputs versus sensory overload. As various sensory inputs are removed, you become much more focused on the remaining sensory inputs remaining. One example of this is the blindfold. You can no longer see your partner. But now your hearing becomes much more focused. You hear everything in the room. Your partner’s footsteps, The ticking of the clock, the turn of the door knob, . You tilt your head to focus in on a sound. You hearing become directional. Your sense of smell kicks in. The scent of the burning candle, the smell of leather or latex, the scent of your partner getting stronger as he/she gets closer. You sense of touch increases. You feel the breeze, however faint it may be, when you partner approaches. You also notice you can feel the heat of their body. Your body becomes a radar station in that you can sense where your partner is simple by their body heat. This list goes but I think you get the point. Now sensory deprivation generally is more than just a blindfold. It is removing multiple senses. For true hardcore it is the removal of all senses. I will not go there with this thread as I think most of us do not play there. I think that most of who enjoy BDSM mixed with sensory deprivation play with the removal of most sense leaving 1 or 2 to focus on. For those who do not know me, I have been a longtime fan of mummification/encasement bondage and have done this for over 20 years. This is one form of sensory deprivation play more to the extreme side. One of the aspects I enjoy about mummification bondage, whether it be via leather, latex, saran wrap, duct tape, silk scarves, etc is the heightened awareness that occurs as various senses are blocked. Lady Pact eluded to her state of heighten awareness in Top Space in the Spice thread. I have experienced this heightened awareness with sensory deprivation. In a particular mummification scene my sight, hearing, taste and sense of smell were removed. I was wrapped up mummification style with plastic wrap and duct tape for an endurance CBT session. Ear plugs, head wrapped, all senses removed except for touch. The thought of the scene was to remove my senses so I would not know what was going to happen next. In reality what happened is my body ended up being NORAD radar base for the room. This did not happen immediately. I think it kicked in after about 2 hours. The sweat from being mummified could not evaporate. The sweat along with the body heat trapped against the skin produced a unique effect in which I could sense heat/cold through the wrap at a much heightened sense of awareness. I could feel the heat from the light bulb of a lamp from the lamp 4 feet away. I could feel the heat of someone in the room as much as 5 feet away even if they were standing still. I knew exactly where in the room they were. I knew if they moved about the room. I could tell how close they were. I was able to tell when I was about to be whipped. I could feel the air movement as a cool breeze across the wrap prior to the landing of the blow. This was a total mind trip for me. Though sight and hearing along with the other senses had been removed that did not stop me from being able to see the room from my sense of touch and the ability to feel hot and cold. I was easily able to detect any movement in the room including strokes of a whip before they ever landed on my body. I lost all sense of time. This also left me on a severe high for the next 2 days after the session. Now I do not want to push this thread in a reaction to mummification bondage. Sensory deprivation can be achieved in multiple ways and to multiple degrees. What I am more interested in is your experience and reactions with sensory deprivation. So here are a few question in the spirit of sharing experiences: For those on the receiving end, Have you experienced heightened awareness that can occur with sensory deprivation? Did you enjoy it? For those on the giving end. What do you get out of it?
