Sensory Deprivation,

Yesterday I posted the Spice or No Spice thread with the my focus being sensory overload. This thread takes a 180 degree turn in it’s focus is more on the removal of sensory inputs versus sensory overload. As various sensory inputs are removed, you become much more focused on the remaining sensory inputs remaining.

One example of this is the blindfold. You can no longer see your partner. But now your hearing becomes much more focused. You hear everything in the room. Your partner’s footsteps, The ticking of the clock, the turn of the door knob, . You tilt your head to focus in on a sound. You hearing become directional. Your sense of smell kicks in. The scent of the burning candle, the smell of leather or latex, the scent of your partner getting stronger as he/she gets closer. You sense of touch increases. You feel the breeze, however faint it may be, when you partner approaches. You also notice you can feel the heat of their body. Your body becomes a radar station in that you can sense where your partner is simple by their body heat. This list goes but I think you get the point.

Now sensory deprivation generally is more than just a blindfold. It is removing multiple senses. For true hardcore it is the removal of all senses. I will not go there with this thread as I think most of us do not play there. I think that most of who enjoy BDSM mixed with sensory deprivation play with the removal of most sense leaving 1 or 2 to focus on.

For those who do not know me, I have been a longtime fan of mummification/encasement bondage and have done this for over 20 years. This is one form of sensory deprivation play more to the extreme side. One of the aspects I enjoy about mummification bondage, whether it be via leather, latex, saran wrap, duct tape, silk scarves, etc is the heightened awareness that occurs as various senses are blocked. Lady Pact eluded to her state of heighten awareness in Top Space in the Spice thread. I have experienced this heightened awareness with sensory deprivation.

In a particular mummification scene my sight, hearing, taste and sense of smell were removed. I was wrapped up mummification style with plastic wrap and duct tape for an endurance CBT session. Ear plugs, head wrapped, all senses removed except for touch. The thought of the scene was to remove my senses so I would not know what was going to happen next. In reality what happened is my body ended up being NORAD radar base for the room. This did not happen immediately. I think it kicked in after about 2 hours. The sweat from being mummified could not evaporate. The sweat along with the body heat trapped against the skin produced a unique effect in which I could sense heat/cold through the wrap at a much heightened sense of awareness. I could feel the heat from the light bulb of a lamp from the lamp 4 feet away. I could feel the heat of someone in the room as much as 5 feet away even if they were standing still. I knew exactly where in the room they were. I knew if they moved about the room. I could tell how close they were. I was able to tell when I was about to be whipped. I could feel the air movement as a cool breeze across the wrap prior to the landing of the blow.

This was a total mind trip for me. Though sight and hearing along with the other senses had been removed that did not stop me from being able to see the room from my sense of touch and the ability to feel hot and cold. I was easily able to detect any movement in the room including strokes of a whip before they ever landed on my body. I lost all sense of time. This also left me on a severe high for the next 2 days after the session.

Now I do not want to push this thread in a reaction to mummification bondage. Sensory deprivation can be achieved in multiple ways and to multiple degrees. What I am more interested in is your experience and reactions with sensory deprivation.

So here are a few question in the spirit of sharing experiences:

For those on the receiving end, Have you experienced heightened awareness that can occur with sensory deprivation? Did you enjoy it?

For those on the giving end. What do you get out of it?

For me sensory deprivation is absolutely wonderful. It's great for calming me down and lessening my stress. I'm able to concentrate more on everything around me, especially Master.

He has found that by zoning me out to that place where I can focus more that I'm also able to withstand more pain, to tolerate his sadism better and actually find it very enjoyable.

The only problem I've found though is when it's over and we're finished that my senses go into overload and I freak out a little. I start to feel a little ill from all the chemicals now raging through my system. It feels like I'm coming down off a drug high and it can be a bit unnerving for me. We've learned how to deal with it though through aftercare...lots of fluids, rest, cuddling, talking, keeping warm.

Blindfold, gag so my own voice doesn't yank me out of my headspace, bondage so the feel of my body flailing doesn't do the same. He has once put earplugs in, and I had an immediate panic attack. I need to be able to focus on him. I need his touch when in sens dep. If he just stood there, not moving, not speaking, I panic. Instead, as he moves around, getting things from the toy bag, checking on the ropes, he makes sure to brush against me. As long as that happens I'm calm and happy. I become totally focused and dependent on him.

I find it's best if he slowly undoes me. Take out the gag, undo the ropes but frequently the blindfold stays on while I drift off to sleep. If leather cuffs, they can stay on also, which helps me to slowly come back to normal.

littlewonder,
You bring up a very good side point of Aftercare. For those who have not played to that depth before a person can go into shock afterwards. This can be from sensory overload coming out of sensory deprivation. And it also can be in part to the stress put on the body during the scene. So Aftercare is critical.

I am curious as to whether anyone has used equipment like Lilly Tanks  to accommodate the BDSM connotation of sensory deprivation.

I had  some profound experiences in a Lilly Tanks back in the 80s. There used to be places in Boston and Cambridge. It was a really interesting experience to suddenly feel nothing outside of me. And then practically get run 0over by what was in fact, inside of me.
I can only imagine how profound that must feel through the heart and mind of a submissive.

Depending on the depth of what is done, I get lots of payback.
No matter what, sensory deprivation is a form of control, so that gets me off. Plus, its an act of trust, and that is part of the surrender, so that hits me too. And SD is one of those things that often hits women really hard, so I like that too.
Then, certain things hit other parts.
For instance, I like, as in love, adore etc... hoods.
Part of why I like them is that they dehumanize the victim, that they render her faceless and identityless, that she is no longer a woman with a personality, face etc...but only a body to be used and abused. I also like the way that hoods heighten the senses she is left with, how a touch is amplified, sound is more intense, that her body becomes a deaf mute violin for me to play and she responds from trapped within darkness.

A good way to deal with the "overload" following sensory deprivation is slowly to remove the methods for the deprivation one by one, allow plenty of space in between so the "victim" has time to adjust to have one of his senses back, then slowly the next one. I found that often the adrenaline rush causes the blood sugar to fall dramatically, it often helps to have a sugary drink at hand, a hot tea with honey etc...

But what mummyman said makes a lot of sense to me, I recall some years ago I had lasix surgery and went from mole to perfect vision - before that my hearing was a lot better than average, same with sense of smell, after the laser surgery, it seemed that my sense of smell and hearing went back to normal, for a while I was almost paranoid and thought I was going deaf, a check showed that it was simply within normal range, the doc asked me why I was so concerned as everything is normal, I explained and he said it happens frequently with people who had lasix, their other senses compensate for bad eyesight. So yes, taking senses away will possibly sharpen the remaining ones.

I have to admit I am a big fan fn hoods for 2 reasons. One, I definitely get on on the SD part. Twon, I also like the anonymity the hood allows. Its like it allows me to transform into a different person. Sort of like switch between vanilla life and BDSM life. My work, my neighbors, my family have no idea I am into the BDSM. So the hoods allow me to mentally transform into my BDSM persona.

I've always wanted to try one of those tanks. The accounts of what people experience in them are fascinating and I'd love to know what it is like. I like your depiction: "get run over by what was in fact inside of me."

AcademyForSlaves -> RE: Sensory Deprivation & Heightened Awareness (5/14/2011 5:55:52 PM)

I like sitting on top of a man and using him for sex either by riding his face or his penis. I have one slave that likes to be suffocated with a pillow while I ride his penis. A new male I met is now enjoying this same scenario of being unable to breathe until I climax. In fact another man I met last year also liked that feeling, so it seems it might be more common that we realize.
