...this in itself is ...of interest-  but how many will actually do so?   Then the comments act like the world is ending.    ....hmm.

I thought in the states when you're in the services, don't ask, don't tell policy was applying?
How can this be then?

Because, when you'll be doing that, you're telling you are homosexual. And that is something some people do not want to know!!! (Time to wake up for some people though)
But I think (even if it doesn't work) it is a really good initiative!!!

Status: offline 		Decent article, addressed the topic, and touched on possible conflicting issues, such as states in which it is/isn't legal, and how this could affect DOMA and vice versa. Which, when I read the headline, were the two things that popped into my head. This is going to be somewhat interesting to watch.

Does state law override federal law? Beyond that, I thought from the days my dad was in the service that most chose Florida as their "home state" because of the tax benefit. Is this still true?

Status: offline 		The Federal law simply addresses the military cases; there's been no fed law allowing same-sex marriage.

There were interesting details, like not requiring the chaplains to perform the weddings if it's against their religious beliefs (complete with a typo):

"The admiral’s memo also gives chaplains permission to "marry" homosexual couples – but would not force them to perform ceremines.


“Regarding chaplain participation, consistent with the tenets of his or her religious organization, a chaplain may officiate a same-sex, civil marriage: if it is conducted in accordance with the laws of the state which permits same-sex marriages or union; and if the chaplain is, according to applicable state and local laws, otherwise fully certified to officiate that state’s marriages.”

Navy spokeswoman Alana Garas confirmed the change was ordered, but told CNSNews.com that the document “does not reflect a change in policy, but a change in Tier I training for Navy chaplains that looks forward to when Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is removed”— something which will not happen, she said, until 60 days after the president, the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff certify to Congress that repeal will not harm military readiness."
I was surprised to see this from CNSnews, given their supporters/founders.  Holy shit, the comments section is pretty amazing on other articles there.

Status: offline 		So if you are overseas, is it legal in your state if your state does not allow the practice? And what of the new chaplains? Would the agnostic ones be allowed the same ability to marry? And will they?

The comments are very negative, but at least the Navy is considering what their policy should be concerning same sex marriage. Twenty years ago, it was difficult for a gay or lesbian couple to find a pastor or minister to perform a commitment ceremony (marriage was unheard of).

I like to think we are taking tiny steps forward.
