ISLAMABAD – Pakistan's military paints a far different picture than the United States of Osama bin Laden's final days: not the terror mastermind still trying to strike America, but an aging terrorist hiding in barren rooms, short of money and struggling to maintain his grip on al-Qaida.

Pakistan paints dismal image of bin Laden's end

The article goes on to say that Bin Laden was no longer in control of a united Al Qaida, which, according to the Pakistani army fragmented some time ago.

According to one report, the compound had the equivalent of $700 of back taxes owed on it.

quote:

A senior Pakistani official said Friday that bin Laden was “cash strapped” in his final days and his terrorist organization had split into two factions. The stronger of the two factions, the intelligence official said, is being led by Ayman al-Zawahri. But some took this advice with a grain of salt, since Pakistan could be deflecting from its recent battered image.

Bin Laden: Broke?

While the Pakistani government is trying to down play Bin Laden's importance to Al Qaida, lobbyists paid by the Pakistani government are lobbying congress to keep the foreign aid flowing.

There is nothing new about this. Even without knowing his exact whereabouts it was obvious that he was a neutered figurehead. Taking him out was symbolic, which has some value, but is far from the "single most important victory in the war against terrorism".

what is?

I hope that US security is good enough that we don't have any idea what is. From whats available to the public, I would say the capture and intel from KSM.

Well, I'm sure there are people who will believe the foreign press, or whoever over anything we say.

Now the point is moot..

I think they are playing him down as being nothing but an old man, because he was found in their country, after years of saying he was not.  Just trying to re-write history like some in this country

India is demanding answers from Pakistan. No wonder why they are down playing this.

"A neutered figurehead" ? Youre kidding us right ? Osama was featured on video every chance AQ got. Western security forces took him serious enough to mount a raid and risk a political backlash with Pakistan, which could endanger co-operation. Yet you consider him a "neutered figurehaead"

Maybe he will return as a talking horse, Mr Dead, and start chatting with Wilbur, where ever he has got to. What do you think ?

Why would a terrorist care if he owed back taxes?      Wow.
