No, not the Woody Allen flick. I mean little-known, almost-always indie films that really grab you, and make your faves list.

When I'm not sitting around thinking of things to say to piss people off, I watch a lot of stuff on Netflix. Right now I'm watching "Hot Tub Time Machine" with John Cusack, who also did "Being John Malkovich" and that flick where he owns a record shop. I'm just ROFL over this flick; it's really turning out way better than I expected.

My favorite "Sleeper du Jour" is a flick called "Smiley Face". Wiki gives a good synopsis.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smiley_Face_(film)

I just could not stop laughing over this flick, because even though the Stoner stuff is cliched, Ana Faris does such an amazing job that had me in awe of her comedic talent.
Some critics loved it; par for the course, the NY critics (w/ the exception of the dude from The Village Voice) were their typical snobby assholes.

So what do you all recommend for really good under-the-radar stuff for invalids, agoraphobes, and people who just sit in front of their keyboards hoping to at least be in the running for the "Benevolent Master Self-Absorbed Pseudo-Deity" award?

The Christopher Guest films.

"Waiting For Guffman"
"Best In Show"
"A Mighty Wind"
"For Your Consideration"

All in the "mockumentary" style of "This Is Spinal Tap" which also featured Guest and many of the others featured in the above films. FYC is a little on the weak side but the first three are nothing short of brilliantly funny.

King of Kong-- a documentary about two dudes in a struggle to the death to be the world Donkey Kong arcade champion

I Think We're Alone Now--a documentary about two rather complicated and eccentric people who are both fixated on/in love with Tiffany (yes, that Tiffany)

Never Let You Go

13 Assassins

I don't know how "under the radar" any of these are because there are such different levels of awareness. There are still people out there who think Wes Anderson is "artsy" and "obscure."

If Cusack rocks your world check out the dopeass shit he did way back in the day, like The Sure Thing and Better Off Dead.

Inside Moves.

Hoosiers.

The fact that both of the above involve basketball is somewhat ironic... I really don't care for the sport... but a good movie can make things you don't care for interesting.

Quest For Fire. Not quite the epic it wanted to be this film still manages to present cavemen as humans motivated by human desires and needs rather than as clever animals or bumbling buffoons. Plus it has a naked Rae Dawn Chong!

Times Square. Rebellion for rebellion's sake! I first encountered this movie as a young teenager and had I not seen it until today I'd probably think it was a piece of shit. But it stuck in me and continues to hold a warm place in the heart of that snotty rebellious teenager that still lives in me. It could have been a much greater movie if (as rumor has it) a sub-plot about a lesbian relationship between the two main characters wasn't censored out by nervous studio execs.

I'm sure there are others that I just haven't thought of yet.

I do not much watch movies, though I do enjoy Eisenstein. Recently I saw one called Domino, which I very much enjoyed, much to my surprise and dismay as it is very rude and violent.

What I enjoyed is that the story is told in bits out of sequence and one had to be attentive and think to follow the plot. It was also that the woman in the Domino role was strangely attractive to me.

Edit: Here is a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domino_(film)

The Mongol, based on the early life of Genghis Khan:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416044/

This movie is the first part of a trilogy, part two is The Great Khan, which I have not yet seen.

The Mongol's website, which will give you some idea of the scope and majesty of this film:

FR

Many years ago I came across "The Gods Must Be Crazy" in a video rental shop and ended up renting it on a whim since nothing else looked good at the time.  Ended up loving it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GorHLQ-jLRQ

Some time later I wanted to see it again and couldn't find it anywhere, but eventually found, "The Gods Must Be Crazy II".  It was just as good as the first one, so I ended up buying it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6pVCkwHInw

I know right! He's literally the Bobby Fischer of Donkey Kong!

I wouldn't exactly call this one a sleeper as it did play at my local drive-in in the early 70s where I just happened to see it.  It's the original Gone In Sixty Seconds.  It had a lousy soundtrack.  The acting was even worse.  But that chase scene is still the best I have ever seen.  The remake of the movie was rather blah in comparison.

There were a series of movies called Mondo Cane.
Very bizzar movies. Showing people/cultures in their most tastful and tastless acts.
Saw a few of them at the 50cent Theaters(how long ago was that?).

It's on utube...

Mondo Cane films were dope! I also recommend this old shockumentary called Keep the River on Your Right which I think is still available on Netflix on Demand and is about gay cannibal tribes in Papua New Guinea, approximately.

Falling Down is a great movie, I agree.

One I like is "Mute Witness."  It has been awhile since I've seen it, but it is entertaining.  However I will admit that the second half gets weak and heavily silly.

I'll second that one.  (Which I believe is the first time I've agreed with DomImus!)

The McKenzie Break (Brian Keith in a very understated Irish role, vs an out of control German POW camp.)

The Paper Chase is one I'll check out when it goes flying by on cable; the book was re-released about 6 years ago.
