Useless snake fact - there's no such thing as a poisonous snake. Poison is injested, venom is injected. Snakes are venomous, not poisonous.

A new study shows that the Asian snake Rhabdophis tigrinus becomes poisonous by sequestering toxins from its prey which consists of venomous toads. The research is published in the current issue of The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Pops,

Where I grew up the Bayou Teche ran right through town.  There was main street, a row of buildings, another street and then the bayou.  it was not unheard of for people who lived on lots next to the water to see small gators or cottonmouths at the edge of the yard.  Especially in the more wooded areas.

As a teenager I had a cheap pair of loose rubber boots I threw on when I went out.  The kind that aren't tight around your leg but have all the stiff rubber that stands out in the front.  I was rabbit hunting in the cane field late one afternoon and stumbled on a cottonmouth crossing a ditch.  He struck before I ever saw him.  He caught that rubber area on the boot and scared the living daylights out of me.  I got my foot slipped up out of the boot , fell on my ass, and just stated shooting at the boot.  I think I am probably lucky I didn't shoot my own legs off.

I hauled ass after and no I didn't look for the snake or try and grab the boot.

Cool!  I wonder how many other species do that?  I'd guess not many, which makes that one all the more awesomer.

Sorry for the hijack, but Bayou Teche? New Iberia?

As for snakes, I know they are good at keeping rodents down and all that jazz, but if they enter my persobale space, I will do all I can to kill them.

No. I just keep the rattle. I don't go looking for them, mind you, but if you see a Mojave Green, then it is pissed at you, and with the dual venom they pack, you can rush to the ER, and still die.

I prefer the extra stand-off distance of a shotgun, but a shovel works just fine.
