How to find a missing relative? I'm going to Minneapolis soon and wish to see if a relative of my Mother is still alive. I've looked for her (the relative's) name on the SS death site (forgot it''s official title). The fact she is not on it makes me think she still might be alive (She would be 90). Is there some government entity that could help me (without a fee)? I don't mind doing legwork to find out.

If you know what county you could search land records.... also dont under est facebook.

Would she possibly be in a rest home? You might be able to find her in an aging facility.

http://www.peoplesearch.com/ is free - if you are able to locate her and want contact info there will be a fee. I think I paid $20 once. Have you tried whitepages.com? If she owns property, she will be in a property appraiser database. If you want help with this, PM me the particulars. KK

go to the local courthouse where you think she may live. Most records are public record and usually you can just go there, use their public computer system, type in a name and see if anything has been filed with her name...land records, liens, probated estate, etc... Facebook ancestry.com, phone book. Being a genealogy buff, these are always good places to start.

These places are not like hospitals, they are also residential.

I know you don't want to spend money, but a Private Investigator can do this search in a matter of minutes for a charge of $50. They subscribe to databases which contain a frightening amount of information.

why is this so strange? I have aunts and uncles in their 70's and 80's who are on FB and are on my friends list. I have a friend who used to be a co-worker who is 95 and she's a FB friend of mine. She's also on a bowling league and goes out for drinks with me and my friends from time to time. 95 doesn't mean she's dead or technologically inept. Don't discount someone's age as a reason for not being on FB.

There is a trend of more older people on FB. maybe not 90. But over 40. (40 is pretty rickety)

Use Whitepages.com. Look at the "associated people," when you get a hit, and follow those leads. It's amazing how far you can get without ever spending a nickel.

Everyone, thanks for your suggestions! I really don't want to spend any money, she would definitely be in a nursing home with no property to her name. Sometimes the online services have 7 day trials for their service, that route might be cheapest. I might go that way. Thanks again!

I think I got her address freely from people finder last night. I just kept zooming the map in. I'm going to call the Nursing Home closest to the pushpin on the map. Thanks again, all!!

hlen, if that doesn't work, I do believe that if you call Social Security they will tell you that they can't tell you where the person is, but one of the nice one's will tell you that they can forward a letter to her, for you. They don't like that information out there though. (Extra work and cost.) She would surely be on Social Security, wherever she is. It wouldn't be something you could quickly do, but it could be done. If you search in different ways, phrasing things differently and maybe using different search engines, you will eventually find most anything you want on someone. Just know that a lot of the information is wrong, someone else or old. I never pay! Look into any interests she might have as well. I can't tell you how many people I have found through sporting tickets or interest they had! Call a seniors group in her area... they are very talkative and helpful and man they have resources!
