IMHO, violence is wrong, period. No one deserves special punishments for the bad guy, if they are assaulted. We should make all punishments harsh enough that folks will think twice before they commit the crime. Crimes of violence are all hate crimes, whether they hate them selves or the victim, or hell, the whole damn world.

FR: One of the attackers has a prior arrest at the same place. One simply can not solve every problem by stomping on someones face. Even if it was deserved- it went on too long. And lets suppose the TG looked at her boyfriend. Big deal. Why be so insecure to think some TG could steal him away. They will have to do something. MCD- will have liability issues too. I can only imagine how that will go.

I agree that violence is wrong, period. But I confess, even in my usual self-supposed broad-mindedness, that in a dark part of my heart that is tired of humanity in general, I would love to see those two little bitches humbled and enjoying some well-earned eye-for-an-eye karma, even if only for the same small but frightening number of minutes. Perhaps this is a weakness in me and I accept it, but I would personally find that terribly satisfying. Just sayin'.

Mentally Ill, and mentally retarded are 2 different things. Mentally ill- is much harder to deal with then retarded. Much more.

~FAST REPLY~ The prosecution is foolish for considering charging the attackers with a hate crime. The victim herself said that she was attacked because the boyfriend of one of the attackers talked to her. The defense will be all over that. Charge them with assault and it is a slam dunk. Elevate it to a hate crime and the girls will likely walk. Add to that too many people who sit on the jury will find it difficult that two black women are capable of a "hate" crime because they have suffered such injustice their whole life, and they walk. I know how racist it sounds, but any half way decent defense attorney will take that position if the elevated hate crime is pursued. Since the victim herself initially said it wasn't because of her gender status, I believe that she is taking the opportunity to get something out of it, and no doubt has a lot of people encouraging her to do so. Another sad situation. Rape is a crime of violence, but not a hate crime. Rape carries its own penalties, all based on what occured. Just because it is women who are most often raped doesn't make it a hate crime. Saying so shows a complete lack of understanding regarding both the crime and criminal justice system. NO ONE, regardless of gender, race, sexual preference, etc. should ever suffer being attacked.

One guy did attack workers- he wanted his money or cigs which were locked in a closet- the worker should in the way- and confronted him. But as a rule MR will hurt THEMSELF sooner then another person. They have incredible empathy- very loving- they see the world in simplistic ways. They can also cut thru the noise- in ways you and I can not. I loved doing that kind of work. It was a learning experience for me. My mom and sister were in the field too. I have some great memories there. One of the supervisors husbands was in the one day- a state trooper. He too was fearful of- - or uncomfortable. There is a such thing as dually diagnosed... meaning MR/MH. But even these guys are not that difficult. PS... I find clowns creepy too.

Going back to the issue of the employees doing nothing, it doesn't surprise me much at all. The typical McDonald's employees are very young, sometimes still in high school.Their inexperience, combined with the shock of what they are watching, probably kept them frozen in place. Hell last week, I had a use of force in front of seven other officers, and only two reacted.

Using force to contain a situation is a part of your job as detailed in your responsibilities. That's not the same as a worker in a fast food joint. Somebody's TG radar works a heck of a lot better than Mine because I wouldn't have known. When I saw the victim interviewed after the attack (with thanks to hausboy who posted that link on another thread) I wouldn't have thought the hate crime charge could be applied because I wasn't sure the attackers knew the victim was TG. Now, I'm not so sure.
