Slightly off-topic, but actual designs of flying cars have been around since 1917.  Two were actually certified.  One by the CAA, the forerunner of the FAA,  and the second by the FAA in the '60's.  The last design was called the Aerocar and Ford had taken a serious interest in buying the design and manufacturing it.

Here's a video of the latest, which the inventors hope to begin selling this year.

Maximum altitude is 10,000 feet with a maximum range of 450 statute miles.

The company recently was granted certification by the FAA as a light sport aircraft, which means all you need to operate it is a sport pilot license which only requires a minimum 20 hours of training and does not require an FAA medical certificate.

The flight rules depend on the pilot's certification.  If someone chooses to stick with the sport license there are quite a few limitations including not being able to fly at night, but they can move on to a private pilot license which will allow them to do more with their purchase.

And, considering that the projected sale price will be $194,000, I think anyone buying it would want to make as much use of it as possible.

Even at that price though, the company claims to have fifty $10,000 deposits.
