Ok-  everyone here knows I stack silver.

Last week- a fly by night gold buyer rented a hotel room and bought up peoples silver cheaply here.

Ebay is getting expensive- all picked out... and shabby coins.

I ran an ad on craigs list- which was pulled.

Maybe someone here has an idea for gaining some.

I even put in the ad- sell before the bubble pops.

Ummmm, you got FRNs ?

I'll send you the siverware I have. I don't want to wait for it to appreciate. A few pounds, some is silver, some is plated. Of course it's all that alloy. Gimme a price and I'll see if we can come to an agreement. You got my mail.

I wish I knew more about it.

If you want it bad, put an ad in the paper someone is always selling.

I was thinking of a sign at the laundry mat.

The bulletin board at Walmart.

How do you know the silver you are buying isn't hot?

mnottertail -> RE: Help me score silver. (4/25/2011 9:46:26 AM)

why would he care?  how does anyone know what they buy from individuals isn't hot?

If you got a 24 year old kid bringing you stacker rings from the 20s you can better believe he swiped em from his grandma, or he better bring in the will.

Hey Ron!

I forgot you are kinda in the biz.......at least if my memory isn't totally shot.

I am not exactly up to speed on the law, not sure if it varies state by state. However, as far as I know, here in Iowa, if you purchase something that was stolen and it gets traced back to you, the least that happens is that you lose the merchandise you purchased. Not to mention the money.

One would hope that the buyer isn't buying, knowing the merchandise was stolen, but if so, I assume it can get a bit uglier.

Would the consequences be different for a business, like a pawn shop, versus an individual? Even if just by sheer volume giving the business a greater risk of running into the issue.

My neighbor sells premiere jewelry.  Costume crap.  How can I get her to deal the real thing?

I'm a buyer, sorry, can't help you out PA! Desperately looking for more physical silver myself. The bull market is heating up!

Silver is money. How do you know the paper rectangles in your purse aren't hot? Paper can be stolen just as easily (or more easily) than metal.

LaT,

I do know people who brilliantly bought stolen cars in 2 different states.  They had to hand the car over and were also out the money they gave the thief.

Yeah, I take the loss for it, cuz most of those guys don't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of, so when they get done with jailtime they go right back to theiving, but they cant sell the shit here.

And of course, I have to help the cops catch them and they won't tell me look out for these guys or stolen items..........

"Would the consequences be different for a business, like a pawn shop, versus an individual?"

I knew someone who ran a pawn shop. The regulations are near staggering. Nothing happens without ID of course, but that isn't the end of it. It's not quite as bad as owning a gun shop, but is about as close as it comes for a small entrepeneur.

With a licensed pawn shop, criminal charges are very unlikely, but like anything else, if they find that something is hot you're out the money and the goods. However, for this to happen someone must make an allegation. That means they have to know who stole the stuff as well as where it was pawned. Thus it doesn't happen often. There is no "hot sheet" except in rare instances.

He gave up on the pawn shop business after a year or so, it just wasn't worth the hassle.
