Marini -> Read this/Go here P & R threads with title/link/copy and paste OP, no summary needed (4/19/2011 10:55:14 PM)

Why do so many people around here, start threads and throw a link up {without bothering to at least summarize it in their own words}, and expect you to read the link, and and start a conversation?

I am on the internet, I can read articles and links until the end of time.
I LOOK for the threads in which you give me a summary or at least a brief synopsis of the link.

I know this is a shocker, I don't come here to read a list of titles and endless links and copy and pastes from the links, on threads in which you can't even be bothered to summarize the information.

I know this is going to startle many of you, but I tend to want to read the threads in which you not only summarize the links {if you have them}, but I look for.........an opinion! your opinion!

When I open a thread that INSTRUCTS me to click on a link, I usually close the thread, or just read the replies, to get a clue what the link is about.

Which explains, why I don't post on that many threads, lol.

I love to give links, that go along with whatever I am chatting or ranting about.
It is very, very, very, rare for me to throw up a link, without either summarizing the link or at least telling you what the link is about.

My question is, why do some of you people do this?
Do you find the article or topic interesting, and you are unable or unwilling to take 5-10 minutes to summarize the material, and its easier to say: Read this!
Does it take that long for you to.....gasp... actually take the TIME to summarize the article and post a link?

I see a title on Politics and Religion, I say humm this sounds interesting, I open the OP and all I see is either a link or a 20 page copy and paste article.
I usually just read the comments below the OP to get an idea what the OP is about, without clicking on the link.

Why don't we create a board, where people can only post links? We can call it the:

Link only, copy and paste, look here and read this board.

As always to each their own, I just want someone to explain the phenoma and interest in starting posts, giving no summary or detailed opinions and than saying: Read this--->

Thanks in advance,
Peace

Yes, we've heard this whine from you before and it has been discussed before, so why are you bringing it up again?

I do it often, purposely to avoid steering the discussion in a certain direction because I want to hear others opinions before I post my own.

If it bothers you so much then simply don't read it, there is no need for a half page rant.

I am editing and shortening my rant to 1/4 a page.

I thought I had started a similar thread before, its been a while.
Got a link to it?

I just noticed so many of these threads tonight.

Thank you for giving the reason that you do it.
Do you think giving your opinion in the OP, would sway the readers?

Thank you for your usual kind reply, take care.

Sorry if I came off a little harsh, but because I'm one of the primary offenders I took it a little personally.

Especially since we have discussed this before, and I don't remember if it was a separate thread you started or discussions within other threads.

As far as your question, I don't know if swaying is the right word,  but I have noticed with my own and others posts that when people post a link and give their opinion on it it from the start the discussions tends to focus on the opinion rather than the article or subject itself.

Thank you for responding, I figured most here would not.

Thank you also for the apology, if people do it, and they ENJOY creating threads like this, I would hope they are not offended.

I now understand why you do it, and I guess many others do it.

I will start opening a few threads like this, on a case by case basis.

There is nothing wrong with it, and I am not the "read this link" police, but sometimes it seems like most of the threads on here are like that.

That could be the posting/thread starting style of many around here.
That is the energy of the board, and I enjoy coming here, so I will deal with it.

I might not ever start a thread like this again, if I do start one in 20 years I might be going senile, and I hope you are still lucid enough to remind me.

Thanks for responding, you are the 1 responder.
lol
take care!

I find it just as frustrating, Marini. A little bit about the link may tell me if its something I wish to spend my time on... or not.

pahunkboy -> RE: Read this/Go here P & R threads with title/link/copy and paste OP, no summary needed (4/20/2011 9:59:51 AM)

...I mind the endless vids.  I simply do not have the time for vids.

I don't mind the vids so much as the damn advertising you have to sit thru to get to them.

Are you kidding ? At least ¾ of what you post is videos.

You've got a long way to go before you even get close to catching up to... unh, someone else. [:D]

Termyn8or -> RE: Read this/Go here P & R threads with title/link/copy and paste OP, no summary needed (4/21/2011 1:45:13 AM)

Why ?

Think of the town crier. They are taken in by what they see and feel the need to spread the word ala evangelist style. Shrinks probably have a technical term for it but I don't know it.

I blow off alot of threads that just have a youtube link in them. There are exceptions but for the most part I can read about ten times faster than anyone can talk, (despite my eyesight) and I don't need the theatrics.

I remember in the old days if you watched something on PBS at the end of the show they offerred up a transcipt of the show. If there was software that could rip these things I would probably get it. In fact I think there is but it costs money, and you know how I am about that. And if it's streaming you get it at 1X, which sucks.

I think you are talking about something different.

I don't see anyone here just posting a blind link without any excerpt from it.

Well, now that I think about it, I have seen it a few times, but not often.

Does that mean I should work harder at it?  [:D]

marini: "Why do so many people around here, start threads and throw a link up {without bothering to at least summarize it in their own words}, and expect you to read the link, and and start a conversation?"

I pretty much pass on those wonderful invitations.

Case 1: >link<
Yeah, so what? What about it?

Case 2: >link< discuss
Uh-huh. Fuck off.

Case 3: >link< Wow! How about that?
See response to Case 1.

Case 4: >link< I think that yadayadayada...
OK, now we're getting somewhere. Someone actually took the time to think about the link, and gave his opinion. Now we have the basis for a discussion.

The first three cases are like a restaurant review that consists of printing a copy of the menu. BFD. Tells me nothing about the ambience, the service (now there's a topic most AMis know fuck-all about), how long it took to get the entree, the pacing of the dinner, the seasoning (if the chef is a heavy smoker, the salt level is almost always unbearable), shit like that.

There used to be this redneck ratwanker on another site who used to spend his days posting headline after headline from NewsMax. I mean he would start 10 threads at a time (until he drank himself into oblivion, and crawled under the porch of his double-wide to croon to his blue-tick hound "T.E.Lawrence"), and the only commentary would be the occasional "dumb-assed tree-hugging pinko fag leftards" or the equivalent. Hooray for the ignore button.

Oh and rule?

I might decide to start another thread with this same topic in the future, so what?
Just as people are free to start the: Read this, Go there and Video threads and some recently have been blind video's, I am free to chat about it.

Are you the thread topic police of CM?

Many people start the same sort of threads over and over.

If I start another thread on this topic or a similar one, feel free not to read it!

Not only that, they don't like it when you ressurect a thread over three months old.

Bingo, which means MANY, MANY, MANY, topics will be "revisited" at one time or another.

If "people" don't like the topics being revisited, don't post on them.

outhere69 -> RE: Read this/Go here P & R threads with title/link/copy and paste OP, no summary needed (4/22/2011 6:20:53 PM)

Not often that I've seen someone post the same topic over and over.  That tends to get modded.

Why restart if you've nothing new to say?
