I say 'Screw the Republicans' bullshit on NASA and the shuttle program. That program requires highly trained and educated people, creates solutions to problems (sometimes on the fly), and gives our nation alot of pride. But, because its expensive, Republicans are against it. William Shatner's Review of the Shuttle Program The Last Stop for the Shuttles If it were up to me, I would take money out of the Defense Budget and apply it to the Shuttle Program. One budget strictly for waging war becomes one that builds apon science/engineering and allows us to go to the final frontier. I fail to see the Republican 'logic' in all of this....

May I point out that the space shuttle has been retired and they are going with what appears to be a system that is an offshoot of the Apollo program.

Considering the economic situation, it would be much better if the private sector got involved in the space program, maybe even as sponsors or investors.

I didn't know that William Schatner was an expert on NASA ? Maybe he could donate some of his own funds ?

The only thing that William Shatner knows anything about is horses. His acting does leave a bit to be desired.

We are not the only space agency supporting the ISS. Americans are going up on Russian craft to crew the space station. During the first years of the shuttle program, there were various plans to replace the shuttle fleet with a space shuttle type craft that could actually achieve high earth or even moon orbit, but they never got off the drawing board, mostly for lack of funding. The Orion system may not see full fruition due to lack of proper funding.

William Shatner, now there's a real expert! "I'm not a Doctor but I play one on t.v. "Space travel" is limited by the speed of light. It would take all the energy on earth to acheive the speed of light. It's about 100,000 light years from one side of our gallaxy to the other. How would you keep an astronaut alive for that long? Until we can figure out how to break the speed of light and by the 5th power at least, anything we're doing now isn't even child's play.

The Space Shuttle never was meant as the main launch vehicle - it isn't a super heavy lifter like the Saturn IV which took astronauts to the moon, it was meant to supplement a heavy lifter vehicle. Also as we all well know it suffered two losses while the Saturn suffered none. Frankly it's retirement is probably going to be the best thing to happen for NASA for a while - which has been stuck with doing the space equivalent of moving a house using a small van...

Since the Saturn rocket did not include the command module you are technically correct. However once you add the command module to the Saturn rocket there was definitely loss of life. Also the comparison is bad because the shuttles logged many times the flight hours of the Saturn/Apollo equipment.

Compare the number of catstrophic failure in the Titan per launch or per flight hour to the STS.
