jlf1961 -> Is there some sort of New Religion being formed? (4/11/2011 5:33:07 PM)

Lately my email spam folder has been inundated with "2012" predictions. They almost seem to have taken over a religion to some people.

I have found references to a "Galactic Alignment" which will trigger earthquakes, tectonic plates shifting and any number of catastrophes happening on 21 December 2012. The problem with this, after a bit of research, points out two flaws with the theory. First, the galactic alignment with the galactic center and equator is that its most precise convergence with the center of the Sun already occurred in 1998.

So called biblical prophesies based on some code hidden in the old testament has been debunked, and on one history channel show, used the classic Moby Dick to make predictions.

quote:

Five years ago, three Israeli scholars published the results of their search in the journal. As they explained, they took names of famous rabbis from a reference dictionary, applied letter sequences and found the names near the rabbis' dates of birth or death.

Using the same technique, others have claimed the Bible contains secret predictions, including everything from the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin in 1995 to a Los Angeles earthquake in 2010.

Major Bible scholars ignore the code because, they note, no one has a letter-by-letter version of the Bible as originally written. The oldest surviving manuscripts include slight variations, any of which would throw off computer test results. Scholars Debunk "Bible Code"

Others have quoted Nostradamus as the source for the predictions, although many of his prophecies have been debunked, although it seems that many people still twist the words in his quatrains to suit various historic incidents.

Then there is the Mayan calendar which people claim ends on 12/21/2012. Actually, the calendar starts a New Long Count with a new age beginning. Calendars don't end, they start over. Just look at any calendar purchased in a store, or does the day January 1 never recur?

Besides, the end of the world has been predicted quite a few times, Library of Date Setters there are 220 dates and years listed.

quote:

Mathew 24:35-36 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone."

According to the emails from one kooky aunt, Jlf, it's May 21 of this year that we need to worry about (she's very concerned that I be living my life for Jesus between now and then).

The 12/21/12 is the Mayan based date. Yes. Just the beginning of a new age, but if you pay attention to the prophecies and legends that go with what we have of that system, you may notice that the ages begin and end with a bit more than a January 1 hangover.

Yeah, I understand that the change of ages according to the Maya is full of turmoil, however, some of the stuff predicted just cant happen, or at least at the speed that these people are claiming. The events and timetables given defy scientific law.

If I only have till the 21st of May, i better find a dominant goddess to spend my money on fast.

TheHeretic -> RE: Is there some sort of New Religion being formed? (4/11/2011 10:35:20 PM)

That's the date of the Rapture, Liks. With thoughts like those running through your mind, you'll have plenty of time for debauchery.

I'm sorry but I don't see all these 2012 predictions or 'The End of the World is nigh' as anything more than self-fulfilling prophecies. I mean, you can claim that anything was predicted if you're using hindsight.

However what I am noticing is a shift in thinking among people in general away from the outdated 'isms' and the progressive movement towards something beyond post-modernism and towards partial relativism.

I have a funny feeling that all this is going to happen towards the end of 2012 and into 2013 when people wake up and see that the world is still turning and things are still the same as they ever was.

I think this is mainly down to the Internet and its influence generally on culture, and through this political, religious and social attitudes. I see a breaking down of the more structured political and religious systems, more diversity and a gradual shift in thinking among people.

Generally I see lots of positives ahead through these cultural changes. I wouldn't say it's a new religion, it's simply new culture. Culture always belongs to the people and irrespective of all the religion and the politics, it's culture is what brings people together and what survives in the end.

I don't about 2012 but since way too many family members who are far right fundies we get all the email forwards from those claiming the rapture is near based on events in the Middle East.

My question is if the rapture is upon us why do they want me to still send them money?

Last thursday one guy who praised his faith pushed me his leaflet into my hands and then got all shocked when I was walking toward the bin...strangely he wanted it back again [>:] I thought it was mine and that I can do with it what I want [>:][>:][>:] To keep him happy I gave him a few seconds time to walk towards me to pick it up again as I wasn't bothered to walk back towards him...

I was in town today and saw a billboard claiming that May 21st is the end of the world. Funny thing is that these die hard fundamentalist Christians preaching this crap seem to forget that Christ himself said that only GOD knows the day the world will end.

Mathew 24:35-36

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone."

This was Jesus talking to his disciples.

I certainly hope they're wrong ... I don't look forward to my 59th birthday being my last day on earth.

beinbluesbeech -> RE: Is there some sort of New Religion being formed? (4/12/2011 2:59:57 PM)

I'm hoping for this year.
I'm paid up on my taxes and don't want to pay another year...

jlf1961 -> RE: Is there some sort of New Religion being formed? (4/12/2011 3:06:28 PM)

I have already said that since the time of Christ, there has been at LEAST 220 different dates given for the end of time.

I have gotten spam about the 21st of December of next year being the end of the world, or in the very least the beginning of some sort of chain of catastrophic events that lead to the end of the world.

liks2plzlf -> RE: Is there some sort of New Religion being formed? (4/12/2011 3:10:42 PM)

There is still to much bible prophecy to be fullfilled, for the world to end in 2012. I keep a fifth of Crown Royal around just in case

jlf1961 -> RE: Is there some sort of New Religion being formed? (4/12/2011 3:47:22 PM)

I tend to agree, if you take the old and new testaments, there is the temple needing to be rebuilt in Jerusalem for one thing, and if they (Israeli government) attempts to tear down the mosque there, all hell would break loose.

jlf1961 -> RE: Is there some sort of New Religion being formed? (4/13/2011 12:24:14 PM)

I would like to see just what the basis for May 21st is, anyone know?
