Which do you practice when push comes to shove?

Focus50 -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 2:37:05 AM)

Both...!

I have a strong sense of justice - which makes 'mercy' relative to circumstance and contrition....

That said, your question is a tad vague and open-ended, no?

Focus.

peppermint -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 5:14:39 AM)

I do not feel that the terms are mutually exclusive.  One can have justice and mercy at the same time.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 7:01:35 AM)

I learned how to take care of business in my old home town of Detroit.
That city has T-shirts with motto's like "Detroit, where the weak are eaten".
My house motto is "COD baby".  That ain't Collect On Delivery, it's "Comply Or Die".
I am a just and kind Master that praises slaves by telling them I will let them live another day.
I'm not a Dom so that negotiation crap is for brat lovers not me.

In my house . . .  push never comes to shove.
In the outside world, it's justice before mercy.  If any survive, then you can be merciful to them if you are so inclined.

It depends on what it is in regards to; but just to answer without knowing, I would have to agree with Focus50

The essence of justice is mercy. Edwin Hubbel Chapin

DesFIP -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 8:28:19 AM)

If it comes down to that, then you've already failed as a leader.

neither... dominance & love for us.

littlewonder -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 10:49:45 AM)

depends on the situation and the people involved.

Kana -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 10:58:00 AM)

I'm a situationally dependent sort of cat myself. Sometimes it's justice. Sometimes it's mercy. Sometimes justice is being merciful and sometimes not.
I make my decision on what I deem best for her and us (her being defined as in how she serves me).

'Push comes to shove' - English idiom - meaning your preferred choice when in a position where you have to choose between the two. When the ywo values clash etc.

Muttling -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 1:17:16 PM)

I practice more mercy than justice.    At times it is appreciated and second opportunity is not taken lightly.   More often the misdeed is repeated and my mercy is viewed as an excuse for disrespect or misbehavior.

I'm not speaking in the kink sense, but in an all of life sense.

I can not think of any situation when one must choose one or the other.   Could you give us some examples so we can understand better?

MissImmortalPain -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 6:05:44 PM)

I agree with ResidentSadist. I have lived with a brat before(four years) and it made me crazy trying to be "kind" to him. Justice is the stronger of the two and the one everyone should have to face. Mercy is for the weak, the dead, small children, and retarded puppies. If you aren't one of those stop asking for it.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 6:33:27 PM)

Brats need justice - impartial and consistant. The rest of us can use a bit of mercy, because (hopefully) we wouldn't take advantage of it.

littlewonder -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/9/2011 6:39:57 PM)

I guess I'm one of those weak people.

There are times when I would do anything for his mercy and thrilled beyond belief when he gives it.

If that makes me weak I have no problems with that. If it means I'm one of the other things you mentioned then so be it...gots no problems with any of those either.

<shakes her head at some of the stuff mentioned around here these days>

I've neglected this thread on the grounds that the one I posted in the politics section is gaining ground, but:

Someone steals from you. You want justice or do you practice mercy? Can you show them kindness? Can you empathise with that person in the knowledge that given certain circumstances you too could be that thief (you can guess which way I'm leaning, here). What is justice anyway but a system for co-existence, much need granted, but as human beings are we merely systematic creatures or do we find some value in having a heart and receiving charity when in some cases it isn't deserved (were you to apply justice)?

littlewonder -> RE: Justice or Mercy (4/10/2011 8:37:07 AM)

it depends on why or who is stealing from me.

Was it a child who was hungry? I show mercy and try to help that child in any way I can.

Was it someone who is a professional burglar? Then I show justice and make sure he gets a stiff prison sentence.

Which, in effect, is applying your sense of justice - who is deserving and who isn't.

Have you ever really fucked up and been lucky enough to be on the receiving end of a kind heart? I know I have.

You have a habit of picking unsuitable partners. Why blame him for being who he is? Other people would find him a perfect and fun companion. Why not accept your responsibility for picking someone who was incompatible with you?
