-- Southwest Airlines announced Saturday that it is grounding 79 planes for inspection following an incident in which one of its flights was forced to make an emergency landing after a 3-foot hole tore open in the fuselage of the plane.

Follow up article by Clive Irving: Clive Irving is senior consulting editor for Condé Nast Traveler and a founder of the magazine.

"Before a Southwest plane lost part of its roof Friday, the airline attempted to delay FAA-mandated inspections for cracks like the one suspected in last week’s incident."

Another Follow Up:

3 more planes found with cracks, 19 returned to service.
Not a very encouraging ratio.

Well.. we always knew it was possible. After all, why else would they have the little masks that drop down?

Just goes to show, they aren't just there to make you feel better about plummeting to the ground.
