Hello.

"if", and I say IF,  the radiation is in the rain, the milk- or what have you- from Japan-  WHAT can us people DO.

AM I exempt if my thyroid is already fried?

WHAT can WE DO?

Not a god damned thing. Chill.

If you're really in a panic about it, buy some potassium iodide pills and take them.  There are 2 primary contaminants coming from the plant, iodine-131 and cesium-137.   The fears you are mentioning all come from iodine-131 problems.   The body can't tell the difference between non-radioactive iodine and iodine-131 so it puts all of it in the thyroid gland at the base of the throat.   If you load that gland up with all of the non-radioactive iodine it can handle through potassium iodide, the body will pass any new iodine it takes in through the body via urine and it won't be in the body long enough to cause damage that isn't easily healed.

Cesium-137 exposure from these plants is massively smaller.   If you've ever gone swimming in a lake, creek, or river you have been exposed to much more Cs-137 as it's in the sediments from our nuclear weapons testing back in the 1940's and 1950's.   However, even these exposures aren't nearly enough to make you sick.

The exposure in North America from Japan's nuclear plants is quite tiny and your body is adapted for living with small amounts of radiation exposure.   Radiation is a normal part of our world, it's when you go WAY beyond what the body can heal from that problems are caused.   If you were alive in the 1980's, you got a far larger exposure from Chernobyl and never even noticed it because it was something your body can easily deal with.

The real concern is for those who live in Japan and the major concern is for the workers at those plants who are struggling to get those units under control.   We are half a world away and we aren't being exposed to things that our bodies can't heal from.   The same can't be said for those workers and I fear for their health over the next few years.

You can stop worrying youself sick.

(Kinda sounds like hypochondria doens't it [;)] )

You can look up correct information and realise that yes, there is extra radiation floating arround, but since your aren't drinking milk from Japan or in close proximity to Japan you really are pretty safe.

(And in reference to your thyroid, have you had your Vit-D levels checked...there is often a correlation between hypothyroidism and low D levels...do a google search.)

If you bothered to read more than the alarmist headline you would have noticed the statement that the levels are much below causing any public health concern.

EPA Says Radiation Found in Milk...

In Washington state. The level detected was in the pico curie range. Curie is a measure of radioctivty roughly equivalent to 1 gram of radium-226. Therefore the radioactivty found in the milk was equal to the amount emitted by one billionth of a gram of radium, IOW not much and way below a dangerous level.

That radiation was due to harmless isotopes that the government uses to track your movements with satellites. Due to this milk you have the same isotopes in your bones and teeth.

Over here in England the BBC news 24 channel shows ABC news tonight most evenings. I caught it about a week after the disaster in Japan and they were calling it the Pacific Disaster and trying to show how radiation might get over to the US.There was not much coverage of how people there were going to cope but one of ABC's main interests was that 5 water pumps from America were on their way and that they would save the day.
I don't know if ABC is one of the better or worse channels over there but I couldn't help feeling it was all a bit provincial ie.how will this affect us and we will save the day John Wayne stylee.
Maybe you should consult other news outlets before getting all het up and take a broader view of the world

OK, to post 6

True to form - the alarmist view. What day did that shit happen ? Nobody is going to say that this has not polluted the air, who knows ? It could be all mixed up now as if someone took a big spoon and stirred up our fish bowl. So be it.

But milk now ? OK this stuff is in the air. From there is goes on the plants. The cows eat the plants. It takes a bit longer for this shit to get into the milk in any significant quantity.

Now just to satisfy the conspiracy theorists, what that means is that the milk was already that radioactive and nobody seemed to be paying any attention. Think of all the nuclear tests in this country over the years. Underground schmunderground, now it's in the water table. Most of this happened a long time ago. Now with this new happenstance, people will take a look and think it happened yesterday. It did not.

nothing.

unless you have a bomb shelter filled with everything you'll ever need.

Otherwise we all learn to accept our new lives and get along in it the best we can for as long as we can.

First stand up straight. Spread your feet about 30 inches apart. Bend down and grab your ankles. Place your head through your legs carefully. Then kiss your ass goodbye... ;-)

Yes, Celeste, but that information wouldn't support his "The sky is falling!" consipracy thoery nonsense.  I'm surprised that he hasn't blamed the original earthquake on some government someplace yet.
