JohnWarren -> Tribes involved in Libya (3/30/2011 2:12:13 PM)

I've found it interesting that the rebels in Libya have been reporting intense civilian resistance as they move west.  Earlier, I'd been willing to put the seeming loyalty of the capital to a well-justified fear of the secret police.  However, now I'm wondering if we are looking at a tribal thing.

This could be very significant.  If the uprising were a class matter, then one would expect the ratio of rebel to loyalist to be fairly even and the events of the last month would indicate that things were pretty bad for the boss.  However, if it is a tribe against tribe thing, we are looking at a civil war and even the most casual reader of military history knows that civil wars tend to be long, bloody affairs.

I'm wondering if anyone knows about the tribal setup of Libya.  I've been trying to do research but there doesn't seem to be anything out there in contrast with Iraq where most of us knew about the tripartite breakdown.

Just exactly what I was looking for.  Thanks

Now I have tribal names and that's the key to further research

Hello John,
It is such an honor to have you in our midst.
Please, let us know what you find out, I would also love to know
more about the tribes/factions in Libya.
I will also look into this, and maybe we can compare notes.
Respectfully,
Mari

Hello John, I am not sure if you have looked at this website, but it seems to be very informative and gives a good over-view of the tribes in Libya.

Wading through a maze of Libyan tribes

I had no idea there were so many tribes!

I guess looking at it, I would be for striking deep south keeping my western front fairly short and wheel around and roll up their southern flank, (and at least breezing thru the uninhabited center)  and it looks like that would be not much of a war to get that far, and would pick up some disaffected fellows I should think, and once they have swept around to the 900 position if need be spearhead from that short front into tripoli, and create a enfilade on that southern front, so they can police up materiel as they go.

And should be somewhat amenable to consensus with the tribal layout and loyalty.  To pop that fucker outta there.

You got any thoughts yet, Looey? Marini?
