See, I wouldn't even announce it. The course is in English (or French, or whatever) and I would expect all concerned would be under the assumption that written assignments are to be written in reasonably standard English (or French or whatever).

Handing in an assignment with text speak (except as a quote or for specific illustrative purposes, of course) is not a sign of laziness, its a sign of stupidity. Stupid people shouldn't be taking up space in universities. Thus no warnings, no chances...just an F.

Why do they leave out the letter b on "Garage Sale" signs?

I wouldn't deduct points. I'd just give it an F at the first example of text speak and move on to the next essay. But I'm an asshole and a language Nazi at heart.

That was my thought as well.

My ability to do Math and Science greatly over shadowed my sentence structure and spelling.  But when I needed to put the effort into a college paper I did.

I think that is ridiculous that textspeak would be allowed in college essays.

One of the reasons I hate text speak (unless it is an emergency and you need to text fast) is that those who are growing up in a world filled with truncated language by texting, are missing out on absorbing our beautiful language and its various uses.

If you think in text speak, think of how limited your communication skills will be.

One of the reason my vocabulary is varied, is that I read voraciously as a child and teen. If I grew up with texting, I might not have developed the language skills I have.

Why doesn't this surprise me?

I taught academic written English at uni level in Poland on courses divided into British and American English. I've failed students for using American spellings. Two failed assignments for a failed semester but two 48 hour extensions if I was informed 24 hours prior to deadline with an explanation.

Any textspeak anywhere on the paper would have brought an immediate fail for being incomplete. If you communicate in textspeak, fine, I don't have an issue with it, but college is academic and on college premises you communicate in an academic manner if you want a grade for it.

I not only checked for plagiarism, I also randomly checked stuff like 'works cited' and references.

As a political system it's rubbish, but there's a lot to be said for communism as a style of classroom management.

This is worse than what those Quebecois did with French.
