Fuck all the jokesters. Looks to me more like instructions on how to decode a message, which would seem to be forthcoming soon one would guess. To Friends NE..twork... worse inc. parse en masse prehold TFXLF TCXL [and] LBE (coding scheme, of many) then we have a string, and again "prse" which probably means parse. no PFSE. NLSRE - more decoding instructions. TFRNE recurs, in a place a greeting wouldn't, so it probably is. So who is TFRNE ? next three lines are further decoding instructions, or the whole of the message. Can't tell which yet. the last line tells me that is is possible that the whole thing is reversed on purpose, people do have a hard time thinking backwards. The reason it fucks up the suits is because they have no definite characters by which to go, even to reverse the whole message. This seems like one where the reader has learned to do so. Why would I tell everyone this ? Simple. If they put it out there, it is not top secret and they are fishing. For what, who knows and who cares. But it si a pretty good code. Not the best, but it does look quite formidable. But if you think for one millsecond that our illustrious and ever potent FBI or whoever would ever ask such a thing, either they are all fucking stoned or Obama really did effect some change. Coulda been Bush though. Coulda been FDR for all that matter. The would ask us ? Bullshit. T^T

Yes, and maybe that is intentional. The game works both ways. Send ten bullshit messages first, then the one that means something last. So it could be a recipe for dog food. Ted said "Fred, send ten tents", Fred said "Ted, send ten cents". People really do think this shit up all day long. I'm surprised they cracked Enigma. That was over fifty years ago, think what they've come up with since then. There is one thing I detect though, some of the characters look like they are from different alphabets, so it probably doesn't matter. One thing to look at there are the preceeding and proceeding characters. It's not conclusive though, because if it is actually not much more than character substitution, three letters could indicate one i.e. JMI is the letter "O" and GMO is the letter "G". The one rule is to break all the rules. Which makes me think it may be my new calling :-) T^T

The whole time I was reading the story I had a distinct feeling something wasn't right here, some ulterior motive at play, etc. For one, if the man had been writing such things since childhood, why was no mention made of what had to have been at least several other samples, and if so eager to invite the public in on attempting to decipher the code, provide these two samples only and no others? And the reporter's question of "If the FBI can't decipher it, who can?" should instantly bring the response from many others: "I dunno, NSA? DIA? CIA? State Department? at least five other agencies with plenty of experts in these matters, all of whom do this stuff all day everyday?" Just a thought. The whole story sounds like a plant. I think you nailed as a fishing expedition. Whether to recruit some as yet undiscovered "Rain man"-type person out there, or someone who might have ties to some underground group or whatever, who knows.

I'm with Termy that the FBI would NEVER just put that out asking for the public's help. Maybe they think the poor victim's killer would be compelled to take the bait they've offered.

If memory serves they've done this more than once in the past - putting out codes they couldn't solve with the hopes that someone would know what to do with them.
