When I used to go to play parties all the time, a lot of people smoked cigarettes--the malignant corporate kind, not the friendly green kind. Nobody smoked inside, but enough people smoked outside that the indoor air always carried at least a hint of the odor. At first I was irritated, but I soon began to associate cigarettes with the prospect of being whipped bloody and collapsing like an exhausted animal into a soft pair of arms. (If Philip Morris ever snares me, it will be with a full-page glossy ad depicting exactly this scenario. Something tells me I'm quite safe.) The link became stronger with each party I attended, until I found myself catching a whiff of cigarette smoke in quite innocuous places and grinning before I could ask myself why. Ever had a similar experience, with any smell?

I was going to say leather, until I realized I associated the leather scent with horses (then bikers) before I associated it with play. otherwise, no.

Classical conditioning. They say it can be leveraged to achieve powerful effects on a slave. Never given it a significant try, but this seems to indicate the beginnings of it would be entirely possible. May have to make some time for experimentation.

In my case, I'm sure it wouldn't have mattered if it was the smell of napalm in the morning, as long as it was frequently accompanied by the aforementioned loving torment. :) To momentarily derail my own thread--Palliata, your Jean de la Bruyere quotation is brilliant.

Yeah I sincerely love that quote. It really demonstrates, to me, a lot of the complexities of living in society, both as a master or slave and as a person generally. Many slaves live relatively simple lives - they cook, and clean, and serve their masters or mistresses according to very firmly-lain-out designs. The other half, however, is forced to navigate an often degrading, usually confusing, and always challenging minefield of complex power dynamics. There are days I wish I'd been born a sub so I could just find the right woman and stop having to fight off the world.

for me it's candles. Having fairly recently been introduced to the joys of hot wax on welted skin, it's my new favourite thing. But I had to go to church the other week for a friend's kid's confimation, and sitting in a pew bored out of my skull listening to the priest wittering on, I smelled the votive candles burning and was instantly in a rather different frame of mind [:D]

Interesting you mention this, we learned in my human anatomy/physiology class last semester that there are structures in the epithalamus of the brain that have something to do with scent and the emotional response to it - habenular nuclei. There's not a lot of facts on this yet, but this area of the brain stores memories to do with the emotional attachment to a particular scent. It's theorized that it helps with the mother/infant bonding process. Intriguing that as humans we actually have a specialized area of the brain for this process. I don't have any kinky smell associations but plenty of other things that comprise kind of an album of smells - smells that evoke memories or are associated with certain people or things.

Definitely beeswax. Scented candles don't do a thing for Me that way because I know they aren't good play candles. Leather, absolutely. If I even catch a sniff of a violet wand being used, the sadist light goes "on". I do have to say, OP, I can definitely see you geared as being easily a good fit associated with folks who enjoy smoking as a fetish. If the smell really does it for you, I think you might be interested in finding someone who likes working with it. The old fashioned cigarette cases and holders. The long opera gloves. Deep red lipstick. (Yes, I know. This is the part where everyone rips Me a new asshole because smoking and second hand smoke aren't the healthiest suggestions in the world. We still are on a kink site.)

there are many smells that have associations for me. at the moment though it's patchouli and leather. they are associated with my playmate and so a slight whiff of them can make my stomach flip and that deep clench. needles

Napalm in the morning? Fuck no.No No No... Too many memories of lost friends and comrades for this lil black duck. The thought of it makes me vomit. Pipe and Cigar smoke accompanied by well oiled leather polished brass and bees-waxed timber and the smell of horses (with the audibles of harness clinking the rattle of wheels and the sight of a horse drawn carriage all have me sinking into euphoria... Long gloves, deep red lipstick, long cigarette holders, chunky necklaces of pure amber and jet, opera glasses, top hats and tails, bring back early child hood memories too.. Definitely born out of time..

The smell of leather and horse sweat. Rubbing alcohol. The first turns me on, lubes me up and gets me into sub space faster than most anything else. The latter fills me with anticipatory dread knowing that I am either about to receive an injection or a needle play session. (Not sure if I am thankful or not that my current Dom is not into needle play.)

It's not a smell, but it was conditioned into me. My first boyfriend loved to drink beer (Amstel in case you care). I hated the taste of beer. But dang that man could kiss me into a coma. By the time we ended our relationship, I was drinking beer and loving it. I still think of him at times when I take a swig.

In general, the smell of cut flowers is a negative for me. That is associated in my mind with funerals and hospital rooms. So, incense and scented candles are out in a play scene for me. Almost to the level of a hard limit.
