The olman bought an emachines years ago. He reloaded it twice and I reloaded it a couple more times.

With the original HD in it, the restore "DVD" didn't really have shit on it. It just called up a partition on the HD. This is proven by the fact that I couldn't reload it, not only with it's restore disk, even with XP Pro Corp. It just wouldn't do it even when I told it to repartition the thing. It still got the files from the restore partition and could not restore the hardware abstraction layer. So I just put another HD in it and the reload went just fine and it will be on the net and the network very soon.

I really should look into a mac. This shit is ridiculous. Now RF is going to be in here telling me how stupid I am, but I don't care. Once I get this baby customized I am cloning it.

Now I wonder if that $#%^&& PC Angel does something like Vista does, which makes the drive unusable for anything else. You know I am sick of this shit. They want you captive and then you get them on the phone and you are SOL. Buy a new one. I will never buy a preloaded system. Not that I have, the olman did, but I will not. I buy it it is mine, it does not belong to Bill Gates or McAffe or Norton, or John, Paul, or Ringo.

When they pay the money they can control it, when I pay the money, they can take a hike.

Fukum, and fukum good. I'll steal their supposed software and stick it up their ass every chance I get.

I know too much about business to let this happen again. They want captive service, and they want it to tell you that you are up the creek without a paddle when THEY say you need a new PC. I don't bite. I am not a fish in the lake and the Creator of all things witness my words now - I will never ever buy a preloaded windows based system.

What's more I shall no longer capitalise the word windows. If it occurs at the beginning of a sentence I will have to think about it.

Fuck those scumbags, GUARD THAT RESTORE DVD WITH YOUR LIFE ! sure, but it has nothing on it that amounts to much more than a fucking batch file. Bullshit. More is less. Fukum.

My new pc told me to make my own recovery disc and I did! I have never heard of that before. Hopefully, I wont have to use them.

Greetings,

Since you've already loaded in a new hard drive, just make the previous one the slave and you're good to go. The error is only an issue if it's bootable. Since you're using the new one for that purpose you'll be able to access everything from the previous without a problem. I've done that on more than one occasion on older systems without a hitch.

Namaste,

~porcelaine

I must get around to that with my laptop. Everything else around here is custom loaded. (now)

What was funny here is that even the restore disk didn't work until the drive was completely wiped clean. I'm already an old hand at retrieving my old favorites/bookmarks and all that, even the right cookies.

Just can't count an anything these days. But i have figured out this much - just clone the drive. Do it while everything works and if something happens just reclone. Not everything is caused by a virus, sometimes it's our old friend Windows that just - ummm - takes a shit.

"just make the previous one the slave "

Kinda like the sound of that :-)

Yes, done that here and there, but sometimes I evetualy run out of places to plug more drives in. At one point I had six in one PC. Had two PSes, SCSI and IDE drives. It was right before the BIG power outage. (don't tell anyone, the problem was traced to this area and they might be suscpicious)

I just bought a new pc Monday evening. The old one finally gave up the ghost. Sorta. The power supply gave up the ghost. $14 for a new power supply to revive it so I could get the data off it since my last backup was a pittance to pay. No complaints. It seems the death of the power supply caused a bit of peripheral damage (no pun intended) and I deemed  it unreliable for continued used so I pulled the trigger on a new one. Man, this new one is so fast it's sudden. I am no technophobe by any means - I barely understand all this quad core shit but I like it.

It's an HP Pavilion. The old one was also an HP Pavilion that has served me well for at least 7-8 years. Can't recall when I actually bought it. I still own and use the last pc I built from discrete parts in 1998. An old Celeron 500 that runs Windows 98SE. It is designated for keyboard emulator use (Hammond B-3) and as an interface for my modeling amp. Pre built computers became so inexpensive I really can't justify the hassle to build them anymore for my needs.

I really liked Win98SE. I eventually got used to XP on the last one. So far I like Windows 7. As soon as I get my feet a little more wet and figure out how to disable some of its more annoying preview tools I'll be good to go. That and sorting out all of my old software that is not Win7 compatible. Sigh. I wish Windows still had some variant of the old File Manager available. I still prefer it to Windows Explorer.

I hope life is treating you well up there in Ruby Ridge, Termy.

So you're the responsible party eh? *lol*

If you're a Firefox user Xmarks is a good option. It uploads your bookmarks to a server and you can access them anywhere. This company has been around for a while and i doubt they're going to disappear. There's a mobile feature as well which makes everything readily accessible at all times.

Namaste,

Vista doesn't make the drive unusable for anything else.. I'm sitting on a laptop that dual boots Vista and Ubuntu as we speak.
