Palliata -> Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 2:13:33 PM)

So I've been having a debate about whether it's ok to use things like handcuffs and canes on successive partners or whether you should have one set for each person/household and never use them again in the case of going your separate ways. On one side a lot of gear is expensive and replacing it all for each person cuts into the budget a bit, but on the other hand I can see how it would be a bit uncomfortable for everyone knowing that there were previous people who felt that particular flogger and that there would likely be more afterwards.

What are your thoughts on this? Does the creepiness outweigh the cost?

mnottertail -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 2:40:54 PM)

clean it.  10% bleach and repair that damage.  that gets most of what is gonna cakk you.

Uh, handcuffs are not toothbrushes.

I suppose I would draw a line and say each female should have her own sex clothes and vibrator, just cuz DAYUM.....

frazzle -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 2:52:31 PM)

If its not able to be steralised and gets bodily fluids on it, it should not be used on more than one person.
So general rule is, insertables aren't shared. Cleanable objects can be.

LadyPact -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 2:55:47 PM)

This is exactly why a lot of bottoms and s-types have certain things that are their own.  Restraints, handcuffs, etc, if they don't want something that's been used on another person, that's the way to go.  Most rope enthusiasts that I know don't have separate rope for everybody that they tie up.  It gets washed.  Any toy that only comes in contact with sweat (not other body fluids) basically get sorted into the 'can be cleaned' pile.

Other body fluids and any toy that is inserted in any way, I believe should be one person use.  I might be in the minority when it comes to the strap-on/anal plug category.  They can be cleaned, but it's My personal preference.  I know I wouldn't really want a vibrator used on Me that's been used on someone else, so I tend to think of it in those terms.

needlesandpins -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 3:21:18 PM)

there are certain things that my playmate and i use that i would be gutted if he used with someone else while still seeing me. ropes and things, well fine. however, the stuff that is more personal though.....let's just say i don't like sharing in any respect.

needles

First check labels on new toys and if label shows "DISHWASHER SAFE" then you know it's washable. Mind you I know people who do put non electrical insertables in the dish-washed to do a final clean after hand-washing with hospital grade disinfectant. hand  cuffs are something else. If you are happy with el-cheapo cuffs at $10 a pair or something nasty then have your own or make them disposable. My cuffs are Police Grade (Double lockable S&W) or the more expensive hinged cuffs costing here at over $100 a set and needing me to be licensed to legally own them. Even when used to restrain some fool we have taken down and awaiting for the Feds to transport him, I always autoclave the good cuffs at my kink friendly surgery. Mind you I'm looking at following the police use of disposable plastic restraints. Depending on your local regs it may require a license to purchase or own them but hey I have used building ties to restrain offender for years even when doing so was illegal.. "Look at the naked chick officer!>>>>>>>>......."  ( Out comes the knife and slice the ties which are pocketed outa sight outa mind)(Rule 24 in the Official Police "Barbed Wire hand-Book" where it is shown the best ways to walk someone a corner of a building  etc.).

littlewonder -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 4:54:47 PM)

I personally prefer my partner to have gear of any kind that he only uses on me but that's also because I've only ever been interested in monogamous long term committed relationships and therefore we always had our own stuff that was just for us. If he had other stuff before I came along then I didn't mind it for the short term until we were able to buy stuff that was specifically for me.

There's a negative vibe, energy that emanates from used stuff that I just don't like but I'm squicked out by the fact that there could be sweat, tears, blood, etc...on used gear of any type.

IronBear -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 5:01:58 PM)

Mind you lass I am a great believer in and follow this to the letter, all insertables have a condom stretched over them before being inserted... Condom disposed after and insertible (including the hand carved handles of my floggers are still virgin.. Except for certain blades which when consecrated are bathed in bodily fluids when being inserted (carefully) after sex and then sprinkles with human blood..

DesFIP -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 6:51:52 PM)

If it hasn't been autoclaved, it isn't going to be used on me. Leather can't be sterilized.

If you play casually, then it behooves the sub to own their own toys.

Arpig -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 8:05:54 PM)

To each their own. When my last relationship ended, all the toys went with her. Outside of any health considerations, it just seems the best way to me...she should get to keep the things that brought her the pain and the pleasure, they have far more meaning to her than they do me.

Ok I have to ask, and forgive me if I'm overstepping my bounds, but what exactly is it that you do for a living? You seem to have the strangest stories referenced obliquely here and there. Is all that coming as a result of your experiences with the lifestyle, or ?

Missokyst -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 9:37:49 PM)

I believe in owning my own toys. I buy them, they stay with me.

IronBear -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/24/2011 10:28:07 PM)

Pretty much retired now but for decades was involved in paramilitary opps for the govt as a private contractot and worked with the federal police especially overseas. Still am involved in a lesser degree..

sexyred1 -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/25/2011 8:09:27 AM)

I have my own stuff, never would use anything that someone else used on another.

When I stick my tongue in her mouth or my cock in her pussy, I don’t plan on "never using them again on someone else if we go our separate ways".  Same is true for my gear.

Just don’t say things like, “Lucy likes this whip, Renee loves this whip, how come you are squirming so much?”  It seems to me the thrust of your OP isn’t about sanitizing the gear but the feelings used gear can create.  I imagine if you stay away from comments like the one above, the “creepiness” factor should remain rather low.

LadyPact -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/25/2011 1:11:03 PM)

This is going to sound kind of gross to some people.  Those of you with an "ick" factor might want to pass this post by.

RS, you are absolutely right.  I'll even agree with you that I can say the same about My husband's dick.  Here's the difference.  I know for a FACT it's been cleaned since the last time it was in someone else.  I don't have that guarantee about a toy.  I don't squick about many things, but that's one of them.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/25/2011 2:39:36 PM)

^ LOL  [:)]

I agree about the health factor.  Fortunately HIV has a short lifespan when dried out so you can even reuse bloodied leather if handled correctly.

Porous ropes, blindfolds, scarves, sheets, etc all get washed and dried in a dryer.
Non porous rubber, plastic and metal get a good soak in bleach or boiling is fine.
Non porous furniture like cages, vinyl bench pads etc get  Staphene® Spray.
For leather, I rotate my whips/cuffs after cleaning with saddle soap into an isolation period of 10 days of drying.  They are ventilated and hanging in open air (not a duffel bag) so they dry thoroughly.  HIV can only live a few hours when dry.

gorbag -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/25/2011 7:44:24 PM)

Sani wipes on non-porous materials used in such a way as to leave a wet film on their surfaces kills everything after two minutes contact. Condoms, both large and small on things that vibrate, penetrate, make her wait, you have it, reduces the number of squigglies the wipes have to kill.

Ok that is literally the most disturbing way of describing STIs I have ever heard. My chinese food is utterly ruined now.

LPslittleclip -> RE: Gear Re-use (3/26/2011 9:57:58 PM)

if it cant be cleaned then it should not be re-used hiv will only last 24hs in dried bodily fluids but hep-b can last for 6 months in dried fluids. always check for cleaning requirements on toys as they differ. well cared for toys will last longer
