I think I feel more grateful than privileged these days if that makes any sense.

I have to agree with you, Aynne88. I am grateful for what I have because I feel I have earned it. Does that make me priveliged? I view privilege as a situation/thing/object given to a person without regard for who that person is and whether or not they deserve it.

Interesting topic, OP. Thank you.

littlewonder -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/24/2011 5:49:11 PM)

Yes and no.

I feel privileged to live in America when I think of societies that have less than we do. I do not feel privileged around other Americans since I've had to struggle most of my life, never been handed or given anything and have had to work hard for everything I've ever had including food and shelter.

I feel privileged to be with Master but I don't feel privileged to the point where I think I deserve things just for being with him or being his slave.

I feel privileged to be alive but yet I don't feel so privileged to be alive that I take being so for granted.

Everything should be given to me instantly and without question.  Everybody owes me a living.

Arpig -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/24/2011 8:29:59 PM)

Do I see myself as privileged? No. I started out that way, but it didn't last. I am nouveau pauvre.

I feel privileged every day that I can wake up and actually put feet to floor. I feel privledged, and in truth, superior to others because life... my life and the ability to be ambulatory gets MY FUKIN HAPPY ON! I do indeed feel privileged and walk around in this world like I own it, cuz I do.

You know I wake up smiling everyday simply because I can get up, feed my kittys, see the sunrise.

Any day I can put my feet on the floor, raise my coffee cup to my mouth is a great day, cause like you Mr.Troll I've had days when I couldn't do either.

DarkSteven -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 6:10:53 AM)

I've been very fortunate.

I'm a white man in a society in which that is "normal".  I have never really encountered anti-Semitism.  And I have been privileged to be in groups consisting of all blacks, all Americans, all Catholics, and all Native Americans - except for me.  I've been able to learn about other cultures comfortable, with my own culture as the main environment.

I've had financial struggles along the way but have never truly been without.

I had an amazing grandmother that loved me as much as I could ever expect.

I had (in the case of my father, still have) parents that gave me a loving upbringing in a nice suburban life.

I have never wanted to be something other than a man.  I've known some trans that have gone through hell.

I'm in darn good shape for someone 55 years old.

I've had good jobs, good hobbies, and a daughter.

Kaliko -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 7:01:36 AM)

I see a privilege as being something that's granted. So no, I don't think I'm privileged, as I don't deserve to be granted anything any more than anyone else, nor do I feel humans in general, or all beings on Earth, deserve to be granted privileges any more than anyone else. I do, though, feel extremely fortunate and as Aynne88 perfectly put it, grateful.

GreedyTop -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 7:32:36 AM)

I agree, Kali, but let's face it.  if you are caucasion (which by your pic I assume you are), you are already granted privileges that you are (likely) hardly aware of having...just based on your skin tone..

Thats what happens in America.

sexyred1 -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 7:58:28 AM)

Privilege: refer to a special advantage or right possessed by an individual or group. A privilege is a right or advantage gained by birth, social position, effort, or concession. It can have either legal or personal sanction: the privilege of paying half fare; the privilege of calling whenever one wishes. Prerogative refers to an exclusive right claimed and granted, often officially or legally, on the basis of social status, heritage, sex, etc.: the prerogatives of a king; the prerogatives of management. 4. license, freedom, liberty.

Based on the above definition, I find it difficult to relate to the concept that just because I was born a certain way that I have any special advantages or rights. Why would the fact that I am born a white female, with red hair, who might be considered somewhat attractive and smart, who is hardworking and has great parents make me privileged or entitled to anything?

I think you can say you are born with or make yourself advantaged in the way you live your life and attempt to achieve your goals. I do empathize with others who may have been born disadvantaged but I have seen too many examples on both sides of the issue, where supposed privileged types screwed up their entire lives and the lives of others and so called underprivileged types have risen to excel in life.

I think that the semantic use of privilege as it pertains to Collarme discussions is not about the definition. It is about an individual's perceived ideal or opinion of themselves. You read about many here who say they deserve privilege because they are x,y or z. Uh, sorry, no, that does not work for me. Just because you decide you are x, y or z, does not give you more privilege than anyone else.

My family and I have worked very hard in our lives and have not had the best of luck despite our collective brain power and being good people. My father is the most brilliant man I have ever met, with advanced degrees, speaks 7 languages fluently and has worked his ass off his entire life since age 18. He should be privileged to live a certain type of life and be comfortable, but yet, events in his career and health have rocked his world for many years and at 79, he still needs to work.

So no, I would not identify as privileged as I don't feel entitled to anything, except for what I earn on my own. I have no control of luck, I can only control what steps I take to overcome whatever adversity I face.

No one is better than me, and I am not better than anyone; I am only myself and those who think they are superior by reason of being born into a privileged environment, should take a step back away from ego and into reality.

LaTigresse -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 8:14:09 AM)

I think you have touched on something that keeps me from associating with the word. You mention, "a sense of entitlement".

I cannot think of anything I feel entitled to. Life is too fluid for that. Everything I have, that I value, can be taken from me in a heartbeat. I don't feel entitled to 'it'. I feel awesomely fortunate to have 'it' for whatever time 'it' is in my life.

GreedyTop -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 8:16:55 AM)

Red, from my excperience, having been born white, into a family that isnt impoverished, but by no means financially advantaged, having a decent if not advanced education..gives me advantages (privilege) not granted to many others.

compared to a LOT of people that dont fit that criteria, I am privileged.. simply based on the basis of my birth and circumstances.  Do I feel entitled?  HELL NO.

I know many folks of darker pigmentation, or more humble financial situations than I was dealt who are FAR more deserving of some of the things I have been granted.

and I am sleepy so I apologize if I am not making sense...

LaTigresse -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 8:33:33 AM)

Greedy you are making perfect sense. I think that there are multiple ways of looking at the word/idea (as with most things) that lead to different feelings about it.

sexyred1 -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 9:58:26 AM)

I think the difference is in the interpretation of words, whether that connotes entitlement, which is what I see many people relating to vs. being grateful for having some advantages inherent in your particular situation.

Again, I truly believe you should be grateful for whatever you have or have been able to accomplish, but I think that is based on individual accomplishment vs. being easily granted whatever it is based on birthright.

Not sure I am making sense either; chalk it up to frustrating job hunting this week and being told I am overqualified for everything.

LaTigresse -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 10:00:11 AM)

Or even just acknowledging it exists regardless of being grateful for it, or perhaps even disliking that it exists.........which is what I am reading in Greedy's words.

Missokyst -> RE: Let's talk about privilege (3/25/2011 10:32:50 AM)

Makes perfect sense to me Greedy.
Thats one of the reasons I consider myself privileged. I had money growing up, I was on the right side of the tracks when it came to neighborhood and I am not white.
However.. that in itself was an anti-privilege. I had the advantages but not without either being told I was not like those others.. OR I had the advantages open to me and it was assumed the only reason I had done well was because of special benefits due to race, which was BS.
