why do some people denote a "fast reply?"

In the bottom right corner of any individual post, in parentheses, you'll find: "(in reply to X)".

A normal reply (where you hit the "Reply" button in the top right corner of a post cell) will make X the person whose post cell you clicked from.

A "Fast Reply" (as you can tell from scrolling to the bottom of any page) is text you are able to post from the page you are reading from, with the text box located below all the posts of that page. However, with a "Fast Reply", X will become the name of the last person to post before you.

People like to use the "Fast Reply" option because it's more seamless (a new window doesn't need to pop up before you start typing), but your post could mistakenly be assumed to be referring to someone for whom it was was not meant or it may not be seen as directed to who you meant it for (this is typically not an issue for people who post replies that have quoted text in them, since who the reply is for then becomes obvious).

So, including "FR" in a post that's been written from the "Fast Reply" box helps clarify any potential confusion.

(Hee, I always get excited to learn and execute new things. Yes, even this; get off me, geez.)

This is the first forum I've seen to add "in reply to ___," and I didn't realize people actually paid attention to it. I'm so used to either stating names when I'm referring to someone specific or just quoting them that not doing either of those, to me, means that I'm just replying to the OP. I've been using the fast reply because I… Well… I'm lazy. There. I said it. It's too much work to choose one reply button out of all of those. I regret nothing.

I always thought fast reply simply meant that you used this box at the bottom of the page as opposed to clicking the reply button associated with one particular post.

Guess not, but I never used it before.

Huh.

Learn something new every day.

I always thought fast reply was a sort of disclaimer saying: "sorry for any typos but I'm in a hurry and didn't bother to proof the following."

Honestly, I'd never thought to specifically note my FRs, I just figured that unless I named someone specifically, they'd figure out pretty quick that whatever I said wasn't aimed directly at them.

I guess I should start noting my fast replies in the future.

I very rarely use the term fast reply.  If I did, it's because I haven't taken the time to read the entire thread and may be repeating something that has already been said in prior responses.  The high majority of the time, any first comment that I make on a thread is based on what the OP has written.  (Kind of the purpose of the thread in the first place, isn't it?)  If during the course of the thread, I want to discuss something written by another responder, I'll quote them.  The chronological order thing isn't that difficult to figure out in most cases.

this is the only site i use where the fast reply works like it does. so to start with i didn't even know that it directs the post to the last person posting. mostly i will quote someone if i want to reply to them unless the thread is one where it is obvious that the fr doesn't apply to the person above, or if it is very obvious that it does because i'm already replying to them in the thread.

that may or maynot make sence but it works in my head lol

I agree with LadyPact on there:

Most of the time I read all the replies which I want to read but sometimes I cant due to lack of energy or lack of interest to read all back (rarely the case but does happen).

But when we are at that topic already, I wouldnt mind if the Mods add a fast reply option to this forum, kind of...next to the in reply to option Thank you mods

this is something i've always wondered and you can't search for it because "fast reply" is in so many threads! haha

why do some people denote a "fast reply?"
if you're one who does, care to explain? =p
i actually REALLY want to know. =p

I do it when I think about it because some people really get their panties in a wad if they think you are replying specifically to them. Considering the tone of many of my posts, I like to have the dart aimed appropriately with zero question as to the target.

So if I type.......Using FT....means.........
