LillyBoPeep -> Let's talk about gardening (3/21/2011 3:50:59 PM)

Spring is here, and Gurney's/Spring Hill/Burgess/WHOEVER's catalogs have been buzzing through the mail since February. Hardware and department stores have their garden supplies out, and are getting ready to block off half of their parking lots for bags of soil and pallets of all sorts of plants.
Do you have any gardening plans this year?
Are you mostly into flowers, vegetables or both?

SylvereApLeanan -> RE: Let's talk about gardening (3/21/2011 4:02:05 PM)

I just want to get my back yard under control.

Last summer, our 65+ year old elm got knocked down by a microburst.  I still have a huge hole to fill and tons of brush to get rid of but the city doesn't take yard waste.  We have to haul it ourselves and some of it is too big to fit in the van.  [>:]
The added sunlight in our formerly very shady yard also opened the way for a metric FUCKTON of weeds to grow.  [sm=gaah.gif]

I've got everything from stickers to pokeweed now.  [sm=banghead.gif]

my plans for gardening this spring/summer is buying a couple of pots for a window garden or paved patio once I move. The next owners of this house can deal with all the outdoor stuff that I absolutely hate here. Waaaayyyy too much work for me.

Yesterday, we celebrated the Equinox by getting out there and tilling. A lot. Then we dug and formed up the bed for my herb garden - so far, I have sprouts for chives, basil, oregano, parsley, sage, thyme, lavender, and chamomile. In the veggie area, we already have onions, green cabbage, red cabbage, some lettuce that doesn't look like it favored the cold snap we just came out of, spinach, broccoli, and strawberries, with plans for corn, yellow squash, cukes, more lettuce, probably pumpkins, and some other stuff (I dunno yet). PLUS, we have transplanted two rosebushes, several young trees, and have plans for at least two flowerbeds. [:)]

I wish I had a boatload of $$$ to spend on my garden. I walked into Armstrong's (not sure if they are national) a couple of weeks ago and it took some real self-control not to buy a whole mess of flowers. I have two window boxes that look so gorgeous full of gerbera...

Anyway, what I went there was for tomato plants. I bought three heirloom varieties that have seemed to survive the massive pelting we got here yesterday in So Cal. This year I'll also be planting corn, lots of it, beans, peppers and strawberries.

Can't wait for spring to be here.

SorceressJ -> RE: Let's talk about gardening (3/21/2011 4:09:32 PM)

Oh yes, the maters and peppers. Both do well in NC soil. Must have.

vegetablelamb -> RE: Let's talk about gardening (3/21/2011 4:33:17 PM)

Eeeeeee, I'm so excited to try my hand at growing some herbs without decimating them in a haze of bad decisions and neglect! Prior to moving into my apartment I steered clear of plants to save them from that very demise, but since picking up a few and managing them well I've developed an eagerness to try to start some from seed. [:)]

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Let's talk about gardening (3/21/2011 4:37:14 PM)

tomatoes do pretty well here, too. they do pretty well almost everywhere. i had a cherry tomato plant at my previous apartment, and also, quite a few ground squirrels. the squirrels would steal tomatoes off my plant, and carry them away around behind the garages. once while walking my dogs, i found the BIGGEST cherry tomato plant i had EVER seen in my life, conveniently located near a ground squirrel hole. =p i got so many bowls of tomatoes from that. it was pretty funny =p

needlesandpins -> RE: Let's talk about gardening (3/21/2011 4:52:23 PM)

my soil is pretty good for crops as lime based. i've grown alsorts here. i used to like a mix of flowers and veg but my newest dog likes to pull everything up. having said that though, i did grow some outdoor tommies last year which he left alone. however, the weather was so bad that they didn't do as well as usual. last year though i started with bonsai and i have two silver birch, one that my playmate bought for me and one we....erm......rescued.....i also have an oak that is in my field at the mo so i'm thinking of digging him up this year and putting him with the birch. i also have a fukien tea (carmona) in the house and want to expand my house collection.

I actually got organized enough this year to dig out a couple of peat-pot kits I had bought a few years ago [8|], and planted the seeds from some 50-cent seed packets I bought. I'm going to have lots of cherry tomatoes in pots on the deck this summer, as well as impatiens in the flower beds. I'd like to do lots more, but I have limited space.

My sweet next-door neighbor brought me a whole shopping bag full of daffodils that she dug up from her mother's house. They actually survived and are blooming in the beds :)

Not sure what I'll put in the flower boxes and to fill in the beds, probably marigolds and some other viney flower to hang over the side. And I want a fuschia or two for the hanging planters. One of my neighbors put a perfectly good plant hanger out in their trash, and I went pickin'! lol

DAMN RABBITS.

What did you say? Grrrr. My Buns have their own garden, it's huge. I'm going to look for the pictures.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Let's talk about gardening (3/21/2011 6:50:37 PM)

I live in a townhouse, so I'm somewhat limited in how much I can garden.
The front is shady so I'll plant impatiens.
I have some large hayracks from Kinsman that I'm going to attach to my deck this year and plant with flowers.
I'm also planning on putting in some tomato, cucumber and pepper plants out back even though I'm not supposed to.

At the shore I'm planning on planting tomatoes and basil.
Clematis
Fig trees
Black eyed susans, hollyhocks and gladiolas.
Also some gerbera daisies.
And lots of sunflowers.
As long as Shorey gives me permission.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Let's talk about gardening (3/21/2011 7:06:21 PM)

hooray for sunflowers. ^_^ those are my favorite flower, hands down.
i dont think my yard will be sunny enough for them, unfortunately, but we'll see when all the trees leaf out -- i think i'm going to borrow a pole saw from a friend and cut a few of them back, anyway.

right now i've got two peonies starting in the front yard, and i'm planning on alyssum along the sidewalk. i have three hosta plants to plant along the front of the house (might get three more... hmm), which is north-facing and shady, and a bed planned for a hydrangea, and maybe some impatiens.

in the back, i'm planning on putting mint around the base of the house, and then a small veggie garden between two clothesline poles. i want to try growing brussels sprouts. i'm planning on some kohlrabi, yellow and zucchini squash, an heirloom cucumber that climbs (i can't remember the name, but it's yellow and sorta spikey haha), and tomatoes. oh and strawberries and maybe a berry bush of some kind. green beans are also a possibility -- need to get out there and stake out the area and calculate what i'll have room for.

I absolutely love peonies but they don't do well here, it doesn't get cold enough. And last summer was really weird, June gloom nearly all summer long, so hopefully we'll have enough sun for the tomatoes.

MaxsBoy -> RE: Let's talk about gardening (3/21/2011 8:25:01 PM)

Alpha's parents are generously allowing me to put some raised beds in their yard, so I'll have my first vegetable garden in many years.  I'm hoping to get most of our produce for the summer of of my own garden, and maybe even put some up for winter.  I've never canned before, so this should be a fun project. [:D]

i had to go snooping and see where you were -- that's interesting that it doesn't get cold enough; i guess not cold enough to get them to go dormant?
i grew up with a peony bush in the yard back home, and when i moved up here, it seemed EVERYONE had them; they do pretty well here in the midwest. ^_^ i might plant more between my yard and the neighbor's driveway.

Oh Oh pick me!

Grins, Tomatoes, cukes, mesclun lettuce mix, hot peppers, green peppers, yum.

And, since I have a new house I have huge landscaping designs to ponders.

I love the garden catalogs, drolling time!

Dahlias, Crown Imperials, Astilbes, roses, and....and......

I love this time of year!!!!
