"You appear to have learnt precisely nothing from the last 30 years of technological advancements."

Perhaps you could explain. I know my shit runs, and it runs the pants off most other people's shit, at least from what I've seen. I detest using other people's computers, it's seems like I am on a 486. My systems are quite "clean" considering what's been done. What are you getting at ?

"That *was* a new experience to my friend: a film newly out on DVD, that he can't download with utorrent."

I know people who do that. I don't because I am not a big movie fan. I've only gotten a couple of movies pre-release on P2P. What's more, if someone wants to make a stink about it I'll delete them and not lose a minute's sleep over it. But if you come for my high quality rip of "The Good, That Bad And The Ugly" you might find deadly force in use :-) Almost everything I want is not making them any money anyway.

In some cases, just for the hell of it I get a whole album or CD's tracks. Usually I only want maybe two tracks. And don't give me this $1.99 per song shit. Try a dime. Especially if I have to take the whole album to get one song, which I did many times for like twenty bucks, back when twenty bucks meant something. I was at the record store just about every week.

I was also at the stereo store about once a month, getting a better cassette deck or something. Before I even had a CD player, I could take two equalizers and a dynamic range expander and make a highly compressed FM broadcast sound just about like a CD. I know I didn't really restore the quality, that is impossible, but it sounded damn good. I used to set it up to record college radio stations on the reel to reel and go out barhopping or whatever, and in the morning see what I got.

And most of what I really want you can't buy anyway.

T^T

PS, next I think I will go after some selections from Radio Carolina, and that is not on the network. I think I have a way. I just want it because "they" don't want me to have it.

T^T

I sometimes wonder if you ever actually read, or if you read, actually assimilate, anything on CM.

It's like trying to talk to an Aspergers sufferer. It's like you've decided in advance what you're going to say, and simply append each new thought to whatever reply you are given, rather than actually reading them.

Actually I would prefer not to depend on a program. What I do is keep the watch myself. I've known about them salting for a long time, what is happening now is that they are getting better at it. The fact is that anything you search for is manufactured (supposedly) right away and presented, this is software, not a person. And they will get better at it, when they do I'll be on the motherfucker.

In the meantime, can anyone come up with a copy of Montrose - O Lucky Man or John Entwistle(Who) - 905 ? There are a few others, and there are a few that took me years to hit on. But those two don't seem to be coming. Forth.

Maybe on the next solar cycle.

You have some misconceptions:

quote:

And to address that once and for all, most of the stuff I download was in public domain at one time. I spent many thousands of dollars on CDs, albums and tapes, I DO have the rights to most of what I have.

No, you have the right to have it in the format that you purchased it in.  It's one of the lesser known parts of copyright law.

quote:

And to me it IS a game in a way. I am down to the point now where I wish I could just hum a few bars into Google and...........

IIRC Shazam.com  does that.  it's pretty cool technology.

quote:

Like I said, they're doing this because it's all they can do. I know someone with a different approach. They just have a good soundcard and a digital audio recorder. That means they can get anything off of youtube or anywhere, and nobody can do a thing about it, there isn't even any way to "mark" the file or anything. Then another who takes requests for rare or import (not even import) albums or CDs. He produces the copy of the CD including artwork and charges half price. He keeps the original and gets what I guess you could call a sixteen bit discount. His collection is about four times mine, and nobody can do a thing about it, since he is in possesion of the originals.

Your friend is playing with fire.  That makes him a publisher.  Unlike P2P distribution the laws about that are _very_ clear.
quote:

They might find a way to damage VLC even. I've seen files that are supposedly audio that put on the VLC screen "Please use Windows Mediaplayer to play this file. Fat chance over here. DELETE !

The data was obviously seeded.  VLC simply did what it was told to do.  If it was actually filled with nasties, and VLC wasn't as well written it would have launched Media Player and then "phoned home."

quote:

I was thinking of setting up a recorder, either a standalone DVDR or DVR. I have this cute lil box that converts SVGA (many modes, almost all of them I think) to NTSC. What in the hell would they be able to do about that ? Copyguard is in the sync part of the signal, and I don't think it's passed on by the video card, so therefore will not be in the output of the convertor. (probably wouldn't be anyway since is has to generate it's own burst signal, and therefore sync)

The RIAA doesn't want you to know this, but it is 100% legal to make a copy of legally purchased media for archival and/or backup purposes.  P2P for "sharing" is not really legal, but there are many perfectly valid and legal uses for the technology.

quote:

So enjoy the golden age of rock and roll right now, because I can see it coming. The next planned hardware obsolescence is on the way. The corresponding software "upgrades" will no doubt make security tighter. Get it while it's hot.

This is why you should contact your Senator and Representative in Congress.

Two other things:

1) Don't use P2P to download your AV software.  That's just stupid.  Although quite funny if it's on a system I don't have to support.

2)  I use Avast! AV.  I have the language setting as "Pirate Talk."  Yesterday I visited a certain Swedish torrent tracker often abbreviated as TPB.  At precisely the same moment the system right next to it updated the virus list.

So I opened up to a window to The Pirate Bay just as another computer said, "Your black list of dangerous sea dogs be safely aboard.!"

I didn't say that, Termy - RF did.

Also - I'll be blunt, mate: I don't understand a lot of what you say. There's too much of what I take to be American colloquial and slang for me to be able to penetrate it! That's a shame because I think - no sarcasm, here - that I'm missing some germs of wisdom. Please try to use a bit more 'international English', if you can . . . .

No need. I have my own copy. Even without the copy, though, I think I'd be able to recreate probably every scene and every line of dialogue in my own head. ;-)

Altogether, now: 'Nayayayayah, ner ner ner'

I use it daily TPB..never had a problem. P2P is often black listed in anti-virus....with out the need of of virusses, just because it is illigal in most countries.
So are many porn websites ( because of pop-ups, content and banners)

TPB has very active mods that check and scan.

You are correct.  I used quotation marks around the word sharing for a reason, but your response clarified that.  Thank you.

"For now? That's been the case since around 2002, when they started that tactic. And you’ve only just noticed?"

I read that, and I have ben doing this since maybe 1999 or maybe even earlier. I was aware of it, and the intent of the thread was mainly to tell people that they are getting better at it.

"The industry is about 30 years behind the curve, and is losing billions as a result of their own stupidity"

I read that as well. For one if they're 30 years behind and I am 20 years behind, so ? There is almost nothing I want that isn't 20 years old. It WAS in eminent domain, so they aren't losing shit, they are just failing to realize profits reselling the same shit over and over. NOTHING is on the network until somone rips and shares it.

"PG isn't used anymore - the project has been moved to PeerBlock. "

Thanx for the update but I never heard of any of it. Never seemed to need it. Why ? Because I watch things myself. I don't need a program update to find out if a file is fishy.

Can someone put in a good word for me ?

"the goal of p2p is sharing.

Yeah well let's explore that a bit. I didn't put "music" or movies" in the title. there are other files, much more valuable. Technical information. I work in electronics and the days of figuring out the circuit by eye are almost over. It's too complex. So service info is gold.

Mnufacturers build something with a product life cycle that is practically non existent. I've seen things in the industry that would put hair on your chest, curl it and take it off in one fell swoop. They build shit they know is going to break down soon, and they hold secret the service info, letting it out only to their authorized affiliates.

When I buy something it is MY CHOICE who will repair it. They want what is called captive service. They withold parts, or make them so overpriced that a repair is not economical. They do this to perpetuate sales, at the detriment of our oconomy, both personal and national.

I am on an exclusive website that distribute this service information - technically illegally. That is a gray area because if the product is patented, the schematic need not be copyrighted. But it is for their enrichment, with no regard to the growing landfills of junk they dump here as they swipe our money. A three thousand diollar unit can (and has) been deemed not worth repairing. What's more in one case the thing was a Sansung DLP that was still under warranty, parts were no longer available.

To do the job one must employ reverse engineering sometimes, and that costs. So on this "elite" website, some guys can get the Mitsubishi website, another gets Sony, another Toshiba and so forth. This could be considered illegal but if you think about it, if a patent exists, the information can be had from the patent office.

They don't play fair, so neither do we. Their goal is for as much of their shit to hit the dumpster, and to make, or rather take as much money as possible. And the side effects be damnned. They are worse (or better) theives than I'll ever be.

Nobody can stop this. They can't even get into this website. To get in, you don't take an aptitude test, you basically almost write one. An essay with certain required topics. Concievbly P2P could be used for that purpose, and I have considered it. For one because P2P seems to be just about the fastest access, at least around here. I get eight times the speed than I've ever gotten off a regular website. Some of these files are huge, like 1,200 pages. Granted half of the pages might be  parts list, but the others are schematic drawings. Even in PDF format they are big.

I have absolutely no remorse doing any of this.

Memory is getting ever cheaper.

Thus far many people have been selective about what they want to remember. Now it starts to become possible to be non-selective.

In April 1995 1 gb sold at 625 dollars. Today 2 tb sells at 89 euro. That is two thousand times as much memory for a seven times lower price in 16 years. If that extrapolates at the same rate then in another sixteen years one might buy four thousand tb for thirteen dollars/euros. It will be possible to store nearly all data available to our species - though undoubtedly any individual will consult only a tiny bit of all that data. What (is and) will be required is data retrieval software.

"I exchange my memory for yours", (Time is the Simplest Thing (1961). Clifford D. Simak) will become everyones way of life.

"No, you have the right to have it in the format that you purchased it in.  It's one of the lesser known parts of copyright law. "

Now you hit country. The cassette is $18, the album $22 and the CD $25. It costs very little in the production process to produce an album, not far from the cost of a cassette. A CD is much cheaper but costs more. Ask Telarc. But the brunt of their case is that it is the content itself which holds the real value. As such, I would be happy to pay $00.000000000000002 for upgrades. I like them and they sound damn good on these newfangled twenty year old speakers I got. I mean really, in a fair world I would not ghave a problem paying SOMETHING for the uprgrade.

"IIRC Shazam.com  does that.  it's pretty cool technology."

I will be looking into that.

"Your friend is playing with fire.  That makes him a publisher.  Unlike P2P distribution the laws about that are _very_ clear. "

Prove it. You can'y unless his customers talk, and that's not likely because then they are supporting a criminal opertion. It's the same bullshit they use to bust dope buyers or johns rather than hookers. If everybody keeps their mouth shut, nothing happens. You can't take the fifth on an affidavit.

"The data was obviously seeded.  VLC simply did what it was told to do."

VLC handles files based on their header, not their file extension. Irfanview from years back did the same thing, and then offered to rename the file for you. So VLC played a one frame video instead of an MP3. I didn't notice any system crash.

"The RIAA doesn't want you to know this, but it is 100% legal to make a copy of legally purchased media for archival and/or backup purposes. "

Which is exactly why I know it. If they ever engage me, I will take it to the end, pro se if necessary. I will never give up, and as they fail to drain me financially they will not gain advantage because of their girth. Fukum, I know the charges, and I would never dispute the facts. We'll just see how good who is with juries. Or maybe not. And of course all of hthis is luck of the draw.

"This is why you should contact your Senator and Representative in Congress."

Not quite.

"Don't use P2P to download your AV software.  That's just stupid.  Although quite funny if it's on a system I don't have to support."

Ummmmmmmmm.

"I use Avast! AV."

I use nothing. Works for me and I don't see how all these brainiacs need all this shit really. Since my shit runs like a raped ape bareback, I can only conclude that this is another manifestatiobn of the aspirin syndrome. The results happen and by post hoc ergo propter hoc people think that the intervention effected the cure, never considering that it is something that can almost never be proven.

"So I opened up to a window to The Pirate Bay just as another computer said, "Your black list of dangerous sea dogs be safely aboard.!""

Now I'm curious.

With memory ( you mean data storage) getting bigger and cheaper, the risk of loosing it all gets bigger too.
People forget that.
It is nice to store all on a cheap hdd. But the trusty server hdd's still cost plenty.
