Yes, cell phones and lap tops were discouraged.

Except for the staff, nobody knew each other, so made more of an effort to be friendly, and sometimes one thing lead to another ;)

When I was in the military in Okinawa, our community was more tight nit than when I served in upstate New York, I believe also because everyone was away from friends and family.

So OP - go to places where no one knows each other and conversations are not prevented by loud music. Spanish class is a great idea. So is yoga - the F:M ratio will be vastly in your favor as long as you avoid the more macho styles like Bikram, Ashtanga, and power yoga. And do try the munches.

You work out the sort of person you want to meet and where they hang out then that is where you go.. No brainer really.. Going to places which you don't like (for me the grunge bars are something I'd need to be dead before I'd be seen there). This has worked for me over the last few decades 100%

Crikey YES, I've had more problems with real life hookiups as my two previous matrtrieges can attest. the first one cost me a business, over US$2,000,000 in homes and cars and other personal assets. The last one cost me my son.....

Yet the best thing which ever happened to me was a real life hook up with my Neets....

I'm just going to shake my head and leave it at that. How can you ask if real life hookups are worse than online when you give us no information where you've found this to be true in your own life? Now that'd be something we could sink our teeth in. So to speak.

Nope. real life hook ups aren't worse than online. I think the odds run about the same for either, provided you handle both the same.

You and some others may have a skewed view because they take more time to interview online before "hooking up". In real life, if you jump the nearest available 'fresh meat' at the local bars or dungeons, you'll get "taking all comers" results. Your real life hook ups might not fair the same odds as online where you are more picky or spent more time interviewing.

Let's see: fifteen years ago is 1996.

I was in Chi-town in 1996. Shortly before Halloween. Good times. I stumbled onto a place called 'Hang-Ups.' The Illinois College of Optometry senior class was having their Halloween party there. Now that was a party.

The ladies were all dressed as sexy cats. Sexy nurses. Sexy vampires. Sexy.....you get the idea.

I don't know what your question was, but thanks for the trip down memory lane! If you have trouble meeting women in a large city like that you need to think about changing your approach.

As for online vs. meatspace: you have the opportunity to get to know someone via text much easier than you do in a crowded bar with the music so loud you can't hear.
