Just downloaded Seasons 1+2, got season 3 on the way. I'm stunned at how far ahead of it's time it was (sans the shoulder pads, of course!!).

I was a mere pup of a lad when it first came out but even then, I loved how 'in your face' it seemed, and looking back as a guy of Crockett+Tubbs age (ok, I'm a shade older but a boy can dream??!) it had an unsurpassed melange of 'cool' and 'gritty' nothing on tv has ever since gotten close to.

Sonny was a hard-drinking, stony-broke playboy with male-model good looks, and girl-length layered blonde hair, who looked like he came from monied stock that lost it all, forcing him to get a grunt job as a cop. He just happened to also go on to become a damn good one. Tubbs was a New York detective with more than a small chip on his shoulder for having had to charm his way out of whatever ghetto he started life in, a smooth West Indian accent, a quick temper, a cheeky smile and surprisingly light eyes for his heritage.

Apart from their utter damn cool, you couldn't ask for two more different characters.

I loved how unflinchingly that genius Mann showed the inside of the department, their twisting private lives, the infiltrations, busts and shenanigans. It all got a little surreal at times with dream sequences, Crockett starting to forget his real id and slip into his alias, and wondering why they still did the job for $35k a year with bullets flying around their heads, but it was all worth it. The amazing bodies on the gangster's various molls ALONE made the series worth watching, as well as the scorching scene in the final episode where they face down a firing squad, and of course, the kudos you get for being able to name the episodes where their boss, Lieutenant Castillo, actually smiled.

Don, Phil, thanks fellas.

Did you see the episode with Willie Nelson ? That was the epitome of the whole series IMO.

And stop getting yourself moderated dammit. Just turn off the afterburners.

I actually agree Airp..., but the Willie Nelson episode was very good. Overdone, a bit on the stupid side, but I liked it alot. The rest of it, well if you remember I believe they have no right to make drugs illegal, so none of their high profile drug busts impressed me. I saw the show more than I really wanted to, and it can go to oblivion for all I care. But that one episode with Willie Nelson was just damn cool as hell.

Youtube, P2P, Hulu, whatever, there is only one episode I would even consider watching, let alone downloading, the one with Willie.

It's right there, I just watched it. I am not saying it's the best thing in the world, but the plot does have some substance.

I just dug the music and cars.

Remember how many guys started wearing suit jackets with t-shirts and shoes without socks because they thought they could be cooooooooooool like Don Johnson?

Funny you should mention that one PA.

My oldest boy loves firefighters.  He's been watching old reruns of Emergency on Hulu.

Was gonna mention that - why comment at all without actual experience?

Back in the day - my whole family watched it.

Oh and the sockless and shoes-  those are boat shoes-  one simply does not wear socks with boat shoes- because in theory you are on the boat- with waves on the deck.

I am embarrassed to say that I used to watch Miami Vice weekly.  Looking back now, it's gee what was I thinking.

We used to watch things like Emergency with the family back in the day as well PA.  I was glad to find those old reruns for him.  Most similar shows today aren't kid friendly.

Yeah I remember it and it sucked!
Cops walking around looking like models and living in half million dollars condos, and driving around in $100,000 automobiles. Suuuuuuure,.....if they were taking GRAFT!

I used to like watching because I lived in miami at the time and it was cool to watch a TV show and think "Ive been there....that restaurant is nice...that one sucks...that's not the bartender that works at that place..the the left side of that pier has good fishing etc etc etc.

I remember when it first came on, all I thought was..."This is Starsky & Hutch on the beach."
But I did eventually get into it. The brunette female cop (Gina?) was hot. One of my buddies wouldn't even come out of his house on Friday nights until it was over. When it came on FX in reruns many years later I was totally into it. It reminded me of the 80's and all the good times I had back then.
I have a bunch of episodes recorded and I still watch them every once in a while. Might go watch some now...

I see. Hmmm.

Have you noticed that when people insult you in person, they hardly never call you fatty, skinny, tiny, lanky, spot-face, stuttermouth, stingy etc, or whatever specific physique or personality-based attribute that makes you stand out from the rest, but rather the denigration generally involves your intelligence?

Just something to mull over.

Actually that is fluff. Nothing wrong with it, but it si fluff. Old Outer Limits, Tweilight Zone, Star Trek. They had plots that would bend the mind around a bit. Have to let these people die because of that. All this shit. Tell you one I hadn't seen, an Outer Limits, the newer series. Started in 95 but I dunno exactly what year. The episode is called "Stitch In Time". It brings up some serious moral issues of which I had never thought.

There are others. Many it seems in the old archives.

Loved it as a kid, now not so much, though I admire Mann's ability to capture the gestalt of the times.

Blame it on HBO.
"The Wire" ruined me for most cop shows and movies.
