Status: offline 		If the government shuts down a few days, won't it save us a lot of money?

Is it really a big deal, if it shuts down?

I remember the last time it shut down, it wasn't such a big deal.

Maybe the government should shut down a few days.

All the governments in the world could take a week's holiday at the same time and we could see if we get on better without them! Would any one even notice if they are gone?

Not necessarily.  The Canadian govt shut down for 22 work days....this is the cost:

"Stephen Harper in suspending Parliament has caused Canadians to lose $130,407,733 in foregone Parliamentary activity."

The Costs of a Shutdown
Following the six-day shutdown that lasted from November 14 - 20, 1995, the Clinton Administration released documentation of what it cost:

In lost dollars:

$700 - $800 million including $400 million to furloughed federal employees who were paid, but did not report to work. The Treasury Department reported another $400 million in lost revenue over the four days that the IRS enforcement divisions were closed.

In inconvenience to citizens:

Medicare - 400,000 newly eligible participants were delayed in enrolling.

Social Security - claims from 112,000 applicants were not processed. 212,000 new or replacement Social Security cards were not issued. 360,000 office visits were denied. 800,000 toll-free calls for information were not answered.

State Department: 80,000 passport applications delayed. 80,000 visas delayed. The resulting postponement or cancellation of travel hurt US airlines, hotels, and tourist industry.

National Parks: 2 million visitors turned away.

Government-backed Loans: FHA mortgage loans worth more than $800 million to more than 10,000 low-and-moderate-income working families were delayed.

Well most sources are pointing to a government shut down, so it might get a tad interesting here.

Status: offline 		Many state works are taking unpaid furlough days, is there any particular reason government workers can't take a few unpaid days like everyone else?

I am not surprised it costs taxpayers a lot of money even when the government is closed.

It will be interesting to see how these budget cuts eventually "go down".

Status: offline 		Republicans are not going to shut down government. They got seriously burned for that last time they did it.

Good thing, too, because it's wicked expensive--just as you don't ultimately save any money by blowing off your bills for a while.

They will, of course, threaten and attempt to get any/all concessions they can in a political game of chicken.

...and the repubs will repudiated yet again. It was they who cut trillions in taxes and then went to war and passed a new drug 'entitlement.' It is they who passed the largest transportation bill in history (2006) and it was Bush who vetoed 13 bills from the dems 2008 to 2010 that in any way might address the failing future.

It was Bush who sent in the feds (court case to prohibit ALL states attorneys' general from stopping the fraud in mortgages) and rendering his two terms the worst job producing and worst financial status in the history of this country. So at the end, we needed more socialism for the rich and we'll be ok.

Well this union paying goon, hopes that people's checks wouldn't be delayed by the gubment being closed a few days, if so this country is in worse shape than I thought!
Most people's social security checks, etc. are direct deposited these days!

Sometimes you have to take a little inconvenience for the bigger picture.

Many of the people receiving gubment checks might find those checks a hell of a lot smaller, if we give into to some of these proposed cuts.

Status: offline 		Marini.. please understand, that I have no problem with public sector or unions,  While they became large and greedy and bloated in the past. They WERE started with the best of intention and by and large I have no problems. Im being sarcastic because of the union bashers in the another post
I worked for foodbanks, homeless shelters and street people , if checks are delayed, the food banks cant handle the overfill and yes people are going hungry
how long is hungry enough?
how many homeless is too many, how many kids suffer just a little very quickly turns into terrible in a few short meals
Things are already stretched to capacity.
To be in this position is more than just  inconvenient.
to more and more people
every day

Status: offline 		Ah Lucy, I understand how people can seriously be hurt by any delay in their check or services.
My point is that people should be up in arms over the proposed cuts that are coming, more so than a delay of services for a day or so.

Of course a delay in services can be critical, I am just thinking drastic permanent cuts in services, will just hurt people much harder.

Damn. So it's quite expensive to shut down. Not to mention the value of education and nature appreciation because 2 million people are being turned away from our national parks, one of the few things that are still usually free to visit.

Status: offline 		I would ask at a foodbank, or a homeless shelter, or motels where people are forced to live because their welfare/benefits doesnt cover the cost of their rent let alone hydro gas, water, etc
WIth all these people out of work thanks to the cluster fucks in 2007-8 , who havent been able to find work, its desperation already

Status: offline 		It would take more than a few days shutdown but it could get very serious. They timed the present CR to end the day after Social security checks go out so they have until a few days before April 3rd to get things back in order before a large group of people, many of whom live check to check, get nothing. That would be a lot of people not paying rent or utility bills and a lot of people having to do without prescriptions, which would certainly mean some would die.

Personally if the feds shut down long enough that my dialysis clinic gets worried about being paid by Medicare I'd suddenly find myself on the hook for 100% of my dialysis instead of the 20% I presently pay. My savings won't last long in that circumstance.
