I am not sure if you read the updates to the article, but it looks like they may be changing the bill to protect abortion doctors.

quote:

UPDATE 3: Jensen met with South Dakota attorney general Marty Jackley Wednesday morning and now says he may drop the bill entirely, the Rapid City Journal reports. Any consideration of the measure has been postponed to next Tuesday while Jensen decides on his next move. Another option under consideration, according to the Journal, is "amend[ing] the bill to make it clear that abortion providers don't fall under HB1171's purview." Jensen could do that pretty easily:

Where HB1171 says homicide is justifiable while resisting an attempt to harm a fetus "to a degree likely to result in the death of the unborn child," Jensen could insert four words: "to a degree that is unlawful and likely to result..."

The bill was dropped, but that doesn't alter the intentions of the legislation.

To say this was benign and had no political motivation is just deluding yourself.

In Jensen's own words:

Jensen insisted the bill "has nothing to do with abortion" and would merely bar prosecutors from pressing charges against a family member who kills an assailant attacking a pregnant relative.

"Let's say an ex-boyfriend finds out his ex-girlfriend is pregnant with his baby and decides to beat on her abdomen to kill the unborn child," Jensen said. "This is an illegal act and the purpose of this bill is to bring continuity to South Dakota code as it relates to the unborn child."

Because I'm sure there are countless cases in South Dakota where this type of thing happens on a daily basis.

Oh! You're right, I didn't see that. Thanks for letting me know.

Never mind, then! [:o]

(what the hell does that smiley mean, anyway? anybody know? it denotes sheepishness, right?)

You're either obtuse or intentionally avoiding the point.

If I'm engaged in a legal activity and somehow cause grievous harm to someone I can still be charged with a crime.

In this specific case the bill is very clear, all that matters is if the killed person was doing harm to the fetus.

I don't think she was deliberately missing the point. I don't think that would be like her at all. My impression was that she just missed something about the way the language of the bill was parsed.

That is a difficult question to answer. The HTML used for it is the same as for the "surprise" emoticon. :o

I have always thought of the picture as an, "Oh, no!" face.

But we can declare it "sheepishness" if you like.

Men doing the aborting ...... men doing the legislating ...... men doing the killing ..... men doing the pontificating

Just another attempt to take fertility out of women's control.

Men doing the bitching... if women were to take the ultimate control. [;)]

That is just not right.

Mary had a little lamb
Her father killed it dead
And now he goes to school with her
Between two hunks of bread! [:)]

There's nothing wrong with the republican party. There's a problem with crazy fundamental christian groups.

There's plenty wrong with the republican party. [It] carries the extremists water politically or this bill would not exist. Soon, maybe killing democrats will be...justifiable homicide ? So why not ? First it was Indians, then blacks, tomorrow...the world. I don't think it was until the 1960's that a white person in the US was ever convicted of killing a black person.

But it's the Republican Party that incorporates the lunacy of these crazy fundamentalist religious groups into their legislative agenda.

Not even a nice try. You have the pres. with his former priest...where is the legislation directly tied to this ? And if we are a free...read free country, why is religion so important ? Only to demagogue and to conjure up more vitriolic lies.

If you have a problem with Obama on this count then you must likewise have a real problem with Romney. All he is, is a polished Steve Forbes who has actually won an office, passed is own version of ObamaCare in Mass., only to now disavow it and if elected pres., will further the US toward more fascist capitalism.

That is not true.

I know that KS executed someone in 1944 for it.

Yes, there have been travesties in justice. But that blanket statement of yours is disgusting.

They wouldn't be so fertile if men didn't fertilize.

Just another attempt to pretend that it's a one-sided discussion.

I think a lot of people missed what the wording would mean specifically the people who wrote the bill.

I don't believe the sponsors ever meant the bill interpreted as an OK for the killing of a Doctor.  The wording just needed cleaned up.
