Im curious how you define successful. Do you mean only from international attacks? Would this not constitute a terrorists attack?

It's a start, but not nearly enough.

What I find courious, and I guess it is my impression as opposed to actual fact, is I thought that the majority of the country was against these provisions.   I thought that Obama and Clinton and other high ranking Dems were leading the charge for its removal.   Of course this is after the law was in effect for a while, not immediately after the 9/11 attack.  Guess I was wrong.

I have no problem with the wiretaps, etc.   What I have is a problem with the secret court.   If you are gonna do it, and there is reason to suspect someone, then come out and get what you need to investigate in the normal manner, just like any other criminal investigation.

The fact is that the United States has never been at less risk than we are now.  Sure 911 killed a bunch of people, but it didn't put the United States at risk (except because of our own reaction to it.).

We have to separate things that are dangers to Americans and are dangers to America.  Seen in that light, this Islamic radical business is about as dangerous as unfenced swimming pools.  The last time they were capable of taking over a country where they weren't the overwhelming majority was about 700 years ago.  They can't even effectively run the countries where they now rule.  We could surrender and they'd have a hard time running Rutland, New Hampshire, let alone the US.

If we didn't need to give this sort of power to the government when the Soviets were making faces at us from behind 13,000 thermonuclear weapons or when the Japanese were marching across the Pacific or when the German submarines were torpedoing ships so close to our coast that the survivors were swimming ashore, why do we need them now when a bunch of ragheads are waving AK47s?

Sure, they'll kill Americans.  We'll kill them back.  What we don't need to do is kill the Constitution.

They can hurt Americans; they can't hurt America.  The CCCP, the Nazis, the Japanese wanted to and COULD erase our country and our way of life.  We didn't give up our freedoms to defeat them.  We don't need to now.

I think this is not a very good time to do this. There has not been a successful terrorist attack on this country since 911. There is a reason for that. Ending these provisions will hamper the Obama administration in tracking those that want to kill us.

I think it is time we decided how much of our freedom we want to give up for the illusion of safety.

Then your party must be also, since they are merely attempting to continue Bush's policies...despite supposedly being against them until they became Obama's policies.

While I agree, the same applies to your disdain for the now Obama policies.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110209/ap_on_re_us/us_patriot_act

This is interesting. It appears that the Republican party desparately wants to CONTINUE the Patriot Act. They were the ones that brought it to a vote using a special procedure that requires a 2/3 majority. The Democrats and 26 Republicans (tea partiers?) that broke ranks defeated it.

I thought Republicans were AGAINST government intrusion into our daily lives. I thought they were for SMALLER government.

Can't blame Obama on this one.

The GOP believes in less regulation on business and more constraints on individuals.

The Dems believe in more regulation on business and less constraints on individuals.

Except for gun control.

Steve, You and I both know that but that's not what Pops n wilbur and sanity et al try to tell us about their glorious party.
