The fact is that the United States has never been at less risk than we are now. Sure 911 killed a bunch of people, but it didn't put the United States at risk (except because of our own reaction to it.). We have to separate things that are dangers to Americans and are dangers to America. Seen in that light, this Islamic radical business is about as dangerous as unfenced swimming pools. The last time they were capable of taking over a country where they weren't the overwhelming majority was about 700 years ago. They can't even effectively run the countries where they now rule. We could surrender and they'd have a hard time running Rutland, New Hampshire, let alone the US. If we didn't need to give this sort of power to the government when the Soviets were making faces at us from behind 13,000 thermonuclear weapons or when the Japanese were marching across the Pacific or when the German submarines were torpedoing ships so close to our coast that the survivors were swimming ashore, why do we need them now when a bunch of ragheads are waving AK47s? Sure, they'll kill Americans. We'll kill them back. What we don't need to do is kill the Constitution. They can hurt Americans; they can't hurt America. The CCCP, the Nazis, the Japanese wanted to and COULD erase our country and our way of life. We didn't give up our freedoms to defeat them. We don't need to now.
