Status: offline 		As for the current winter storm marching across the land, it isn't supposed to hit my area for another six hours... so no stories yet. I could give plenty of stories about snow storms past (up to and including the blizzard of '77) but right now I have to get ready for this one.

Hmmm... happy herb, pastrami, Pink Floyd albums, DVD of Fly Away Home... it looks like I'm set.

Status: offline 		We've got about six inches here in the mid Hudson Valley with periods of ice/sleet intermixed. My plow guy just did us for the first time, he'll do it again after it ends for good. My teen has no school, again.

Status: offline 		It's snowing here now. We're supposed to get about 9 inches. I heard when the storm hits Chicago, it might dump like 2 feet of snow. About 3 years ago, a bad ice storm hit Kansas and many people lost power. Fortunately, the town I lived in at the time had its own power company so it was back on in a few hours. Many people in surrounding towns had to wait several days. I feel sorry for anyone who lives in a mobile home in the winter. Pilot lights on heaters blow out and ice storms knock out power. Both of these lead to frozen pipes. Since most mobile homes have plastic pipes, they're pretty much guaranteed to bust when they unfreeze. I don't know how much it costs to have all the pipes in a mobile home replaced, but I'm sure it's not cheap.

Status: offline 		Almost all new and remodeled homes have PVC pipes.

It's been snowing here since around noon. It is supposed to snow through the night and tomorrow morning. We got ice yesterday afternoon and last night. We are supposed to get around 2 feet of snow with lots of blowing and drifting. Basically, we are having a blizzard as I type.

The biggest hassle is the wind. Visibility is only about 20 feet.

We always have plenty of food in the house. We have a generator. We have plenty of fuel for the generator and an alternate heat source. Always a supply of candles. Plenty of feed and a shelter for the horses. Worst case scenario there is if we lose power I have to haul water out to the horses a few times a day because the tank heater won't be working. No big deal.

I didn't go to work today and won't be able to go tomorrow. I save my personal days for just such an occasion. Just like it was as a kid, a snow day is like a holiday. It's all good.

Nala thinks she is a sled dog and wants to be outside all the time. Sophie runs out then does a 180 and hauls ass back in. Sandy the dingbat dog doesn't know what she wants.

I made it to the gym for a good work out before the snow hit. Made my phone calls and emails.....all loved ones are in their homes and safe. I am baking bread, watching movies and goofing off online.

Life is goooooooooooood.

Status: offline 		We're supposed to get about a half inch of ice tonight into tomorrow and my work made sure to let us know that no matter what happens with the weather we're still open and must show up.

Yeah...tomorrow morning is going to be interesting on figuring out just exactly how I'm going to get there.

Status: offline 		It's just awful here.  Rain, rain, rain and temps in the 40s.  Firm and I actually had to run to the car this evening when we left dance class, just so we wouldn't get too wet.  I may even have to turn our heat on tomorrow night as we're expecting a low of 26 degrees!

Status: offline 		Here near Milwaukee. 8 inches of snow today, 10 to 14 additional coming tonight. Winds 40 to 50 mpr..Temps are in the teens.

Status: offline 		Storm is pretty much over here. Sir didn't have classes today and we just found out the college will be closed again tomorrow. Neither of us is scheduled to work tomorrow either so I'm happy. I get to pick on Sir all day tomorrow.

Status: offline 		So I just went to dig out the area around my front door. I have been going every hour or so in hopes it would remain manageable. Just now it took alot of my considerable bulk to open the screen door, and after that served as sort of a plow I found myself in snow to the top of my boots, thought this doesn't seem that bad, then I noticed that there was about three feet piled on my steps. By the time I got to the bottom step it was up to just below my chest. Granted I am only 5'6 but we are supposed to get snow here till about 8 this morning. I wish I had moved to Arizona when I had the chance! If anyone is interested I can try and upload some very mediocre cell phone shots.

Wind. Chicago is not the windy city, this is. I am near a cliff, or at least a big hill. It averages 5 - 10 degrees cooler here than in most of this town. And the wind is extreme at times due to the lay of the land. When you drive down the street and the wind is blowing bricks, rocks and pieces of trees at you, that is not quite normal.

Cooler in the summer is great. We get a really nice breeze, but in the winter you need a King's ransom to pat the heating bill. For better or worse, here I am. Oh, and of course around here fallen (blown down) trees are not that uncommon. We just plant new ones.

Yes, the wind.

Status: offline 		I just got home from work (2nd shift). I work at a bank and had parked my car in a drive thru lane so I wouldn't have to scrape too badly. When I left, it took me twenty minutes to hand shovel to get to the street.

The street had one thin plow line thru the middle. Drove 2 blocks, turned one block. crossed the highway and realized too late the street on the other side of the highway wasn't plowed at all. Got stuck, the town policeman came. Luckily so did a person who was snowplowing. The cop had a strap and the truck towed me out, and plowed the remaining two blocks to my house.

The guy then snowplowed my driveway (it's 2 land yachts wide by 3 land yachts long) so I could get off the street. He wouldn't take money. I had a bottle of juice and some cake I was bringing home so I gave that to him for my thanks.

I grabbed the shovel near the garage and walked towards the house. The wind was blowing hard so it wasn't immediately apparent I was looking at a drift higher than my waist I had to break through. I crawled over that (with a bag of groceries and a gal of milk I was carrying).

I got near the house and had to shovel snow to open the door. The drift was a few inches higher than the door bottom and covered the steps to it also. I had to also shovel a spot for my min-pin to use. The snow near the door is probably 3 times taller than he is.

I'm now inside with the dog on my lap and very glad I'm staying in tomorrow!

Status: offline 		The worst snow storm I can remember since living here was on March 16 and 17th several years ago. The worst ice storm was a little more recent.2006 I think. The snow storm started on a Friday afternoon. I had driven the 4wheel drive truck to work because of the forecast. It took me 2 and a half hours to get home. Usual time is 40 to 50 minutes. Generic Dude was in the middle east so it was just me and the dogs hanging out and watching it snow all weekend. The ice storm knocked out our power for 4+ days and others even longer. The guy that owns my company was out of power for over a week.
