Looks and quacks like a duck to me, Popeye. Got something on his official powers as President (for Life)? I'll give him full credit for keeping the peace with Israel, but his people are demanding he go, so he fires everybody but himself? He doesn't seem as malignant as that word often sounds, but power does corrupt, and his people are hungry, and pissed.

I just want the Egyptians to get the revolution they want, instead of insanity, or a new set of chains. If this goes badly, it could go very badly.

Ha! They said on the news last night that in the last "election" Mubarak immediately had a candidate against him arrested and jailed under trumped up charges.
Then, there's that 30 years thing. I vote "dictator."

Elements of the American government support him, so he can't possibly be a dictator.
You people have a long history of deposing democratically elected leaders of foreign states and putting psychopathic gunbunnies in charge instead, after all. If Batista wasn't a dictator, no way is Mubarak...

Not to throw stones mooney but the English had a pretty heavy hand in Egypt for a long time. Most of the Western resentment of the population can be laid at English feet.

No question, and the same goes for Iraq. Sadly, you guys took over the problem over there a while ago.

We do seem to follow on with Big Brothers mistakes don't we.

A lot of the time, sadly, yes.

The Egyptian army now looks like its refusing to play his game. Soon the question is likely to need rephrasing into the past tense.

It doesn't matter if he or if he is not.  Whatever we do has to be quietly and behind the scenes.  The US Government can't come out and say "Oh our bad, we've been supporting a dictator for the last 30 years".

I'm hearing reports via BBC that Mubarak has offered to stand down at the next election, and to lay the ground for an orderly transition between now and then.

Sincere promise? Strategic retreat under pressure? Can he be trusted? Or a ploy to divide the opposition whose primary demand has been for his resignation?

I guess we will find out before too long ......
