Alright, maybe I missed something in this report, BUT, please note what I put in bold text.

quote:

DETROIT – A 63-year-old Southern California man who was traveling with explosives in his vehicle with the intention of blowing up one of the nation's largest mosques where mourners had gathered for a funeral was arrested in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan authorities said Sunday.

Dearborn police said Roger Stockham was arraigned Wednesday on one count of making a false report or threat of terrorism and one count of possessing explosives with an unlawful intent. Stockham had a large but undisclosed quantity of class-C fireworks including M-80s, which are outlawed in Michigan, Chief Ronald Haddad said.

"I was comfortable with the fact that we had taken him off the street — he isn't going anywhere," Haddad told The Associated Press Sunday afternoon. "I think the society he wanted to impact is safe."

quote:

M-80s are a class of large firecrackers, sometimes called salutes.[1] The Simulator, Artillery, M80, was originally made in the early 20th century by the U.S. Military to simulate explosives or artillery fire;[2] later, they were manufactured as fireworks. Traditionally, M-80s were made from a small red cardboard tube approximately 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long and 9/16–5/8 inches (1.4–1.6 cm) in diameter, with a Visco fuse coming out of the side, holding approximately 2½–3 grams of pyrotechnic flash powder; one source states that an M-80 has at least 3 grams of explosive.[3] Some contain up to 5 grains. 4-grain devices are legal in Germany and the Philippines at this date. For comparison, the Quarter stick contains 20 grams of explosive.

While it is possible to take the explosive out of the M80 to use to make a pipe bomb, there are easier ways to do so. I fail to see how an "undisclosed" amount of these constitutes a threat, unless they were part of some device and all wired together.

I think there would be easier ways to build a bomb.

My cousin blew up his high school with one of those.

Aylee -> RE: Man arrested with explosives at Michigan mosque (1/30/2011 8:57:21 PM)

You didn't put the link, but if I am reading this correctly, he planned to blow up the Mosque with fireworks?

You would think that at 63 years old, he would have seen at least a FEW MacGyver episodes.

Although I suppose if he had enough firework morter shells he could have at least started it on fire.

outhere69 -> RE: Man arrested with explosives at Michigan mosque (1/30/2011 8:58:44 PM)

I call bullshit there, pa.  You can blow a few toilets off the wall, wreck the bathroom, but you're not going to take down the high school unless it's made out of cardboard.

sorry that I missed putting in the link, there it is.

Police said Stockham has a lengthy history of mental problems and crime.

According to published reports, Stockham previously has been implicated in a bombing plot. A 1985 Los Angeles Times article said Stockham was arrested that year at Reno Cannon International Airport for planting a pipe bomb and carrying an unregistered firearm. The newspaper said Stockham, 38 at the time, had a history of criminal and mental problems and was being sent to a federal penitentary for evaluation of symptoms reportedly caused by post-traumatic stress related to his service in Vietnam. The article doesn't mention what the outcome of the evaluation was.

jlf1961 -> RE: Man arrested with explosives at Michigan mosque (1/30/2011 9:21:18 PM)

I still think it is a bit of a reach to classify a bunch of fireworks as a threat, unless there is something that is not in the story.

Aylee -> RE: Man arrested with explosives at Michigan mosque (1/30/2011 9:25:40 PM)

Well, if you read Heretics link it talks about this guy having been bomb crazy for a while.  Has spent some time up the river for it and everything.

Although "a typical surfer" than also wants to blow people up.  That is a new one.  Reminds me of that Patrick Swayze movie, Point Break.

Heretics link says that he had a car full and there was actually enough there to cause serious damage had he fashioned them correctly.

TheHeretic -> RE: Man arrested with explosives at Michigan mosque (1/30/2011 9:30:53 PM)

The AP seriously needs to fire some editors, I think, Aylee.

This may give you a better answer.

Roger Stockham, a 63-year-old ex-Army veteran from California, was arrested earlier this week after allegedly driving to Detroit's largest mosque in an explosive-filled car, planning an apparent terrorist attack. His plan was foiled: While drinking at a Detroit bar, Stockham reportedly bragged about the idea, so an employee followed him outside, wrote down his license plate, and called the police. Local cops found Stackham inside his car, outside the Islamic Center of America, with a load of explosives. Inside the mosque, more than 500 members were gathered for a funeral at the time. He is now being held on felony charges. On his MySpace page, Stockham recently said, "Proud of my kids. Happy with how much I've lived. Ready for it to be over, but have a policy I contend with often: So long as I am alive, I can't play dead."

M80's aren't like black cat fircrackers.

M-80s are illegal in the United States. Don't make them, buy them or use them. That's all you really need to know. Firecrackers sold to the public in the U.S. can only have 50 milligrams or less of pyrotechnic composition per firecracker. A true M-80 contains much more than 50 milligrams, and is therefore illegal. Is it really worth it, if the possible consequences (losing a finger or your hearing, losing your girlfriend because she doesn't like M-80s, paying a fine or spending time behind bars) outweigh the brief instant of "fun" you got from a loud bang? If you have a desire to "win the war" in your neighborhood by being the one who set off the loudest bang of the night, or if you feel there is some kind of status or macho glamour in possessing a "real M-80" when everyone else has ordinary firecrackers... well, all of these will wear off quickly as you are sitting for hours in a courtroom later on.

I found this from the link below.

TheHeretic -> RE: Man arrested with explosives at Michigan mosque (1/30/2011 9:58:29 PM)

You can buy all sorts of illegal fireworks on Indian reservations, including a huge place along the I-15, north of Vegas. The M-80's don't seem to have the fencepost destroying power I remember from my youth, though.

jlf1961 -> RE: Man arrested with explosives at Michigan mosque (1/30/2011 10:15:18 PM)

Heretic, I posted the specs on an M80, but I agree, the current ones just dont have the same power as they did when I was a kid.

If this individual had built a pipe bomb at one time, the question is why go to the trouble of trying to use M80's as fireworks. It would have made more sense to take the explosive out of the them and combine them into a large device.

Of course you can make a crude device with black powder you can buy at any sporting goods shops that carry muzzle loading supplies.

FR

I agree that this is not a news item.

Did something else happen thereabouts that this might be intended to divert attention from?

gehennasfury -> RE: Man arrested with explosives at Michigan mosque (1/31/2011 2:12:08 AM)

I don't know what occured, if anything, that the press might have wanted to divert attention from. What I don't understand though, and maybe I'm just closed minded, but why are we letting the fanatical Muslims get away with everything. I believe it was France that recently banned ANY religious headcovering, regardless of faith. Several Muslim countries have enacted laws forcing women (even non native tourists) to wear the hijab. I realize that 9/11 was planned by some really demented Islam fanatics and executed by the same. If memory serves, Christianity and Judaism are both banned in some Muslim countries. What I'm trying to get at is why do we let people from known "Pro-Arab, Pro-Muslim, Anti American, Anti-Israel" countries into the U.S.?

My question comes from an old Bill Cosby routine that went something like this:

Before the Revolutionary War, there was a coin toss. America won that coin toss so her troops could wear what they wanted, hide where they wanted, and do what they wanted. England had to wear bright red tunics and march in a straight line. In Vietnam we lost that toss.

My point is, how do we know someone from an aggressive Muslim nation isn't a terrorist or part of Al-Quada?

My counsel is that you specifically do not worry about such things. Stop listening to and reading and watching the news. You will be a lot happier.

Because they might want to get away from that sort of bullshit and live in a country where their daughters won't get stoned if they fuck somebody they're not married to?
