It's a load of bilge over very little. Oh, and what didn't get reported, but possibly will in time, is that the 1st female linesman concerned was shite, and the current one has already made some highly dubious calls.

I certainly don't agree that "women don't get the offside rule", as any ex of mine could quote chapter and verse ;) but it really is the most ludicrous tripe from Sky ... that's Sky, BTW, that fires its female newsreaders when they reach puberty, and makes its female sports reporters wear very little when it's freezing outside, and when they're standing next to male presenters dressed head-to-toe in 50 layers of warm clothing. Oh, and where they pay their female newscasters less, justifying it on "not as experienced as their male colleagues" grounds, while missing the very salient point that the reason for that is because they tend to employ female newscasters for 10 minutes, and male ones for decades.

Yes Gray's a fucking dinosaur. I don't give a fuck. He's the single best TV footie commentator/pundit Sky have, and Keys does a brilliant job too. Now we'll have to put up with some other fuckwits, just because Sky are looking to boost their PC image. It's telling that a couple of females who'd actually worked with Gray before said he's infamous for his un-PC banter, but that he's got balls enough to do it to their faces, rather than behind their backs, and further that he's actually the perfect gentleman at all times in behaviour terms, and stood up for female staff when management started telling them how to dress ... <cue Andy Gray voice> "It's a sports show, not a fucking fashion parade. Who gives a fuck?".

Also, from the BBC news site: "Former England women's cricket captain Rachel Heyhoe-Flint was supportive of Keys and Gray, describing their exchange as "banter". "I know Richard and Andy very well indeed," she told 5 live. "These were tongue-in-cheek comments and we are blowing something enormously out of proportion here.""

And where Karen "Is this top cut low enough do you think?" Brady gets off on calling anyone on "sexism" is absolutely staggering; this is the clueless twat who slept her way into a Board level position of a footie club, and then admitted to employing male assistants on the quality of their arses!

AAAARRGGGGHHHHHHHHH!

Hypocrisy and stupidity on a grand scale. I fucking hate Sky.

<deep breath>

There. That's better :)

In all seriousness though; yes, Gray & Keys fucked up, but they also raised perfectly reasonable concerns. I'm sick of crap like this getting more than the 10 seconds attention it deserves - the battle for equality is a matter of equal pay, conditions and prospects, not this lightweight crapola.

*mops your brow and makes you a cup of steaming hot tea*

Feel better now?[:D]

I'm torn either way. What they did was stupid... actually I am more green at Keys than Gray. But they are stupid behaving like that while at work... public figures or not.

I actually don't really care if she is a shit lineswoman or not and whether there have been dubious calls, the comments were not directed on a personal level at her, but at women in general and wasn't just playful banter and that is tasteless.

Yes the hypocrisy at SKY is sucky and they probably are just covering their own arses, my contemplation (ooooer big word) is what is worse - the sexism or the lack of privacy.

Well now, that's an interesting point; I actually think it was a deliberate stitch-up - they weren't live, it wasn't broadcast, so you have to ask yourself why anyone bothered now, since it's probably been that way for years.

You should care, because what we're seeing is a witch-hunt conducted against people on the basis of them making improper, rude, sexist, unpleasant but entirely correct comments.

The hypocrisy is worst. But of the others ... well it's not a privacy issue really; I've worked in a broadcast environment (Studio Tech at a well known news broadcaster) and everyone is always aware they're "on" when miked-up, so I don't wear that "defence". The sexism? I know this is going to sound awful, and I'll get wronged for it, but I've reached the point where I've developed "ism-fatigue" - I just don't care. If they want to say wrong things I just don't care anymore. I'm sick of it all; the faux-outrage from arseholes like Brady, the Sky management trying to cover themselves in glory by demolishing 2 people who're very good at what they do ... and most of all, the distraction from the real issues; equal pay and conditions and prospects for women in the workplace. Sky have fallen foul of that one several times (as has the BBC of late) and I can't help thinking this is yet another pointless, 10-cent smokescreen from a very clever media organisation that's trying to make itself look "good".

Yes I know I'm wrong, truly I do. Yes I know it matters how men talk about women, and no I don't do it myself. But I've just had enough of the pile of unmitigated shite that is PC, where people's competency matters less than their image, and where every trace of foible or character is smoothed out to leave a grey, homogenised world of talentless talking heads. Oscar Wilde was prone to an unhealthy dollop of misogyny, as was Alan Clarke, one of the funniest characters ever to grace politics, as was Winston Churchill, possibly the greatest Briton ever. Yes I know the world’s moved on, yes I know I’m a dinosaur, but this is so trivial and pointless a matter when compared to the actual, genuine, worthwhile issues surrounding it that I wish that a) those concerned would, instead of grovelling, just say “yeah, I said that; so fucking what? Was it live on air? No it wasn’t, so shove your “setting an example” crap. Am I employed as an equal opportunities spokesperson? No, I’m employed as a commentator and sports expert, which I am. So shove it up your arse” and b) that before anyone, and I mean anyone, here or elsewhere, person or corporation, picks up a rock, that they examine their own life, in its entirety, and only launch said brick if they’re completely blameless.

Fat. Fucking. Chance.

AARRRGHHHHHH! You've done it again! I've ranted! :)

Oh poop... don't take what I said outta context.

quote:

I actually don't really care if she is a shit lineswoman or not and whether there have been dubious calls, the comments were not directed on a personal level at her, but at women in general

If they had been talking souly about her and the fuck ups she makes then yes... blown out of proportion I would agree with and if they were making a statement of fact - like just left it at 'Yeah well someone ought to go explain off side to her' then that could be understood as a slur against her and not her sex. Even if they had left it at the 'Can you believe that, a female lineswoman'... that could have been explained away... but they didn't. They blatantly roped all females into their discussion and then went on to talk about a previous lineswoman who had no baring on this individuals skills.

Gray is infamous for his 'playful' banter and innuendo. I don't take issue with that really... that is up to the females involved.

But that wasn't playful, but a bigoted remark.

I'm not usually up for the whole, PC thing either. I'm not what you would call a feminist. But I do think they fucked up and although they aren't there to be spokespersons for pc correctness, that shouldn't excuse them and if they have had warnings before then they brought it upon themselves (In Grays case). And I'm not big on 'setting examples' as this was off air... if you want to be a bigot, then you gotta accept that people are going to not like it... and visaversa.

But it's the privacy vs. the sexism thing that get's me... and weighing that up, I can't quite put my bazoomas in either hand to even that out.[;)]

PC isn't the same thing as feminist. The latter I have no issue with, the former I despise with a passion.

You're missing the point - why has this happened now?

It's a bullshit smokescreen.

quote:

It isn't actually about either of those things. As always, one needs to look deeper.

I'm not defending them - they're both fucking idiots because they knew they were miked-up. But I find I really don't care - what they decide to say among themselves is up to them. I don't care. If they choose to make disparaging remarks, I don't care. If they choose to prematurely end their own careers through stupidity, I don't care.

What I do care about is a) having to listen to rabid, hypocritical crap from that waste of space gasbag Karen Brady and her ilk, b) the fact that the footie commentary on Sky will be worse now than it was before and c) the sheer brass neck of that cornerstone of the Murdoch* media empire, Sky, in attempting to position themselves as being an equal-opportunities, PC-led, employer.

*a man of legendary and staggeringly sexist views, it should be noted. The hypocrisy is so far off the scale it can't be measured with existing technology. This is the man who put topless pics on page 3 of The Sun, and has subsequently done everything in his power to put every rival out of business, by fair means or foul (and has been prosecuted several times for breaking the law in doing so), FFS. Oh, and whose businesses have been sued time and again for sexist, racist and homophobic content. I hope the leathery old scumbag's todger rots off, soonest.

Oh I know, that's why I put them in different sentances. It was just one of those disclaimer blahs really... I should have used an asterisk maybe.
And I loathe both (believe me, when you are told that as a woman, you are setting feminism back years... it kinda makes you a little bias[;)])

quote:

I don't believe I am. I don't actually see why I have to think in terms like Sky. Yes... if we just focus on the fact it's sky and blah it's all hypocrisy - that's pretty much a given.

But you can't sit there and think it's ok for people, knowingly miked up, to spew such bigoted sentiments and just say'I don't care what they say' when this then effects decisions on what happens next - shes already been pulled from a match now... and now the whole focus is on women, rather than her own lack of knowledge. The fact is that this is now beyond sky and murdock and breasts in the sun.

Well personally I have no objection to feminism. My experience is that it's too much fun doing feminists up the arse to give it up now. Hoorah and huzzah! ;)

What I'm about is career equality, and sideshows like this pile of budgie-droppings move attention away from the very real inequalities in the Media sector, which is precisely where the TV companies want them to be. Example; the BBC (our beloved BBC, FFS!) recently got properly slapped for ageism (and rightly bloody so), in the case of a female presenter. Their reaction afterwards was to apologise profusely and accept without reservation that the Tribunal's findings were wholly and completely accurate. Oh yeah? So why not admit as much before the poor girl had to go through 18 months of pure hell, eh? And would they have said as much if they hadn't lost? Of course they wouldn't. Fuckers.

I've examined my conscience and I've decided I don’t give enough of a fuck about that crap to care anymore. My equation is a simple one:

S-(G+K)=US

Where:
S = Sky footie coverage
G = Andy Gray
K = Richard Keys
US = Unmitigated Shite.

As I say, I know I'm wrong*; I know I should be outraged by them. I know they're idiots. But I don't care – I want my decent footie callers back, and arseholes to a bunch of women in comfortable shoes** :)

(It’s a good job I don't believe in Hell, eh?)

And it isn't "beyond Murdoch" - that is actually the core of this "issue", if I can dignify this storm-in-a-teacup thusly.

Anyway, enough of this. I'm not dignifying this pissant topic with my attention any further ... <haughty harrumph, followed by door-slamming departing flounce>

<door opens again>

<looks back around door>

Was that ok for you, sweetie? ;)

*”Things you thought you’d never see in a CM Forum discussion, No. 475”
** Or, more accurately, to a bunch of weak-minded fuckwits who believe they have the best interests of women everywhere at heart, regardless of footwear. The fact that I doubt very much if all that many really care is immaterial to them.

Yeah you are right, I fucked up on my grammar. That wasn't meant to be a 'you can can't sit there and think'.... but meant as a 'You can't sit there and think..... blahblahblah with a ? at the end... it was a question (directed in general and not just towards you) than a rhetorical statement... my bad and I apologise for my rubbish english.

Maybe we are at cross purposes then, because although I used this as an example because it was current, it wasn't meant to be so much about the individuals involved, but more about the sexism vs. privacy (like I said).

Not at all - it was only my little joke. I try not to have more than 3 smilies per post as it tends to make one look like a gurning buffoon - I certainly didn't think you actually thought what you said about my thinking about your thoughts about what they were thinking when they ...

Add to that crappy commentators as well, who are rarely watching the game being commentated on, or so it seems. But then if youve ever heard any male comment on football, you wonder what game they were actually watching!!!
