I am a celiac with sensitivities to many other grains, so I am on an extremely low carb diet.  Not only does this keep my weight down (whether I like it or not) I am healthier eating this way that I have ever been.  I have no nutritional deficiences, and though I'm thin I am very strong and fit.  Not that I advocate such an extreme diet for those who are just trying to lose a few ounds, but I can tell you from experience that it will make you lose weight, and fast.  It also isn't unhealthy if done right.  I have to do it right - I have no choice in the matter.

Peon have you tried HIIT?  It will kick your ass if you do it right and you either get more out of the time you normally exercise or you can if you are in a rush cut some time off your cardio while still being vamped up.

My problem is on the devil machine (Eliptical) i try and do HIIT and i get sooooo tired after vamping it up that i slow down too much lol and the machine pauses out.

Greedy, check with your doc but have you talked with your doc about strengthing your core all around and not just your abs, you can get some great ab work in the pool.   A chiropractor may be able to give you some.

What if it's an arse that needs some coaxing in order to come to some agreement?
Would that be a willing to compromise arse? [8D]

[:D]

Makes me think, though.  My ex's arse spoke loudly to me on occasion.  Perhaps it was trying to outline some compromise in my relationship with it - but I wasn't listening.  Typical male, eh?

I have - in fact, I've started getting into that more of late after hearing lots of good things recently about its benefits.

I'm very glad that you went into more detail about the subject. Yes, I simplified it for a reason. Alot of people do not care to much about any of this and just want a quick and easy way to lose weight. So what do they do ? They start cutting the carbs out completely and increasing their activity. Have you ever seen gym go-ers ,  even more so around the start of the new year almost faint on the treadmill. I have and its not pretty. Its not a pleasant experience for them and I willing to bet anything that is one of the major reasons why people drop around February. People needs carbs and its not pretty when the ones who are looking for a quick fix completely cut them out.

In my experience the majority of the "resolutionists" who drive me to working out at home for most of January are not low carbers.  They're just unfit.  Most of them are doing low fat diets, or extreme diets, and none of them are likely to stick with either the diet or the exercise regime no matter what it is.  Fainting during exertion isn't a primary symptom of low glycogen, or even of what low carbers call "Induction Flu", the body's way of saying a great big fuck-you when you first transition from a glucose burning metabolism to a ketone burning metabolism.

Low carbing actually *is* a quick and easy way to lose weight, if you do it right.  Again it depends very much on the individual client and their needs and existing habits as to which way of eating will be the most sustainable and successful in the long term.

question: what would you suggest for someone with a chronically bad back to do to work abs?

I would want to know where is this back pain ( upper ,middle or lower) and why do you have a bad back.

mainly lower back.. scoliosis and lordosis

To be honest I would rather continue eating what I want whilst remaining fit. Not that I eat junk but I love my food and I would hate to go out to a friends for dinner and panic about whats being served.
I think one of the biggest culprits of weight gain is too much alcohol and fizzy drinks. I like a glass of wine now and again but I never touch the fizzies.
The other thing I never understand is, why is it that all the things that are bad for us taste so good?
Willpower is the only thing that really works and if you can keep up that willpower you will end up with the body you want.

My ex husband was a champion power lifter and so had a very high carb diet and he was always drinking those weight gaining drinks. He used to lift trucks but he could sprain his ankle just walking down stairs [8|]

I have ruptured disks, and have tried everything, but lately I've been having good luck with ab crunches/leg raises while hanging from a chinning bar, one of those new ones that hangs from the door molding - it's totally unloaded, and you can vary your routine quite a bit: one leg, both legs, hold it, side to side, etc.

They make slings for your arms to help you keep hanging, but with a length of nylon strapping across the back and under the arms and some imagination, I'm pretty sure you could rig a suspension harness that leaves your lower body to swing free, without having to develop an iron grip - it can be fun too, but make sure to secure the bar and don't get too wild - if you get too violent in your motions, the bar thing can slip off the molding, but one long screw into a stud can fix that.

I sure hope you are under the supervision of a qualified medical professional.

Well, it happened when I was 16, the doc told me to get a desk job, so I went into construction.

I was fine, it went out maybe once a year, or so, when I strained myself, but when I started raising kids and sitting in front of the computer all the time, it caught up to me.

I tried the ab lounge, but it seems to cause more pain than relief, until I hit on the pullup bar thing it was getting bad - it takes several months until the abs are strong enough that I'm not in constant pain, I'm almost there now, and I've put 20 pounds of muscle on my upper body doing it, just hanging from the fucking thing!

But no, doctors cost money.
